Agree on all counts. I'm going to get all the releases. I hate that I am, but I've accepted it.

Actually, the slip that came with the BD specifically says: "Ultimate Collector's Edition"...

Re: Watchmen: 7/28/09 (?)

I didn't love the movie when I saw it in theaters, but I think I am going to pick up the Blu Ray. I think the extra runtime might fill in some stuff I didn't exactly understand having never read the graphic novel. It doesn't hurt that the a/v is great according to that review.

But I really want to see the maximum movie mode. I hardly ever watch extras anymore, but it looks really cool.

I wasn't really interested in this film, but I caught it in HD last night and I'll definitely be picking up the BD now.

So it's five discs but none of the content overlaps with the director's cut set? That can't possibly be right. I can see Under The Hood taking up one disc and the movie another. What's on the other three? More cuts of Blade Runner?

Well, this is how it'll probably break down:

Disc 1 - Movie
Disc 2 - Features
Disc 3 - Under the Hood
Disc 4 - Complete Motion Comic
Disc 5 - Digital Copy

That's my guess anyway...

^ But isn't Under the Hood only about 12 minutes long?

The BD of the motion comic included a 2nd disc with a digital copy, right? That's probably here as well.

37 minutes. They might be including the whole Tales of the Black Freighter disc in there. If you're gonna have 5 discs, you might as well use one that's already been authored and everything.

It's Black Freighter that's the shorter of the two, (but not by much) it's 26mins long. Zack originally said not all of Black Freighter would be interwoven into the Ultimate Cut, we shall see...

That promotional ad doesn't mention it being a DVD release. I could see them doing 5 Discs for DVD and 4 Discs 4 Blu-ray. I hope that's not the case though.

If it's an ultimate edition of the movie, why the hell is the motion comic even there? Might as well have just ported over the special features. Unless they're going to pull a LOTR EE and have actually created exclusive documentaries for the Ultimate Edition.

Why not include it? It's part of the set, just throw it in there.

How about the theatrical edition? Is that too much to include?

Having all three cuts of the movie would make more sense in an ultimate edition to me.

Same here. I want the theatrical version on Blu. And I've bought the Motion Comics & Black Freighter on Blu already. >

Re: Watchmen: 7/28/09 (?)

To be honest, based off the early reviews, I don't see how much more they can add to a BD set.

The "Maximum Movie Mode" lasts for the entire movie (along with all of the features branched into it) and the second BD has nearly two-hours of additional content.

I'm placing my bets as this is what the BD will look like of the ultimate edition:
Disc 1: New Cut of the Film
Disc 2: Bonus Features
Disc 3: Motion Comics
Disc 4: Digital Copy

Same goes for DVD, just that the New Cut will be separated across two discs.

Re: Watchmen: 7/28/09 (?)

People with PS3s can look forward to the ""Maximum Movie Mode" without concerns, as this is one of the few players that can deliver secondary audio (for PIP) along with full lossless primary audio at the same time.

Owners of other players who are anticipating this release should make sure they understand their players' implementation of secondary audio and how to access it. If you are bitstreaming to your AVR, for example, most players can't provide secondary audio at all. Those that can will do so only with lossy compression, by "re-encoding" the audio after the original streams are decoded.

Even some players that decode internally and send multichannel LPCM may not do so with secondary audio enabled. Check your owner's manual.

For the people trying to guess at the contents of the Ultimate Edition, keep in mind that the Motion Comic is about five hours long and takes up two discs.

The Blu-ray is one disc with the second disc being the digital copy.

I just bought tickets today to see the Watchmen: Directors cut at the chinese theatre this friday. Apparently there is a very limited theatrical release of the directors cut this weekend prior to the films homevideo release
