ANYWAY, back on this actual topic.....sure, they can try and charge whatever they want for it, but asking for a far greater amount than what anyone is willing to pay is stupid, whether they have a right to do so or not, when the alternative for them is zero....I'm not saying they should just settle for some peanuts amount if that is all Disney offered....but both companies should be willing to compromise to make the best product possible, meaning Disney should pony up a few more bucks if necessary, and Criterion be willing to negotiate their price down a bit as well.....
As it is now, everyone loses out: the consumers get a less complete disc, Disney could possibly have lesser sales as some people on the fence may not "upgrade" since all the extras were not ported over, and Criterion gets zero payment....

Again, no one here knows the actual, complete specifics of the situation, other than the post from Pereira who got the vague answer from Smith...we can only speculate based on the limited facts we do have....

I'd say Criterion has a right to ask for whatever they want. It was probably on the high end because I imagine Chasing Amy is one of their highest-selling all-time DVDs, since it's cheap and mainstream. Thus, they consider that commentary and its exclusive appearance on a Criterion DVD to be a valuable commodity and priced it as such, and Disney was uninterested in paying that much. Personally, I imagine most fans out there already own the Criterion disc -- I do -- so I'll just be keeping it to accompany the upcoming Blu.

I never even noticed that until you pointed it out!

Had something to do with them taking the picture for the poster after filming and he shaved. Like they couldnt fix that even with fake fur? The cover should just be black with a pair of chinese fingercuffs on it.

Anchor Bay (a company a mere fraction of the size of the Disney behemoth) was able to come to an agreement to use Criterion's commentary for Halloween on the BD release....and even Disney themselves have already been able to work out a deal for supplements with Criterion before, as their BD of The Rock carried over the previously produced bonus material...
Like I said before, we don't know the specifics as to why a deal could not be reached in this particular situation...if I was Criterion, and Disney offered only a mere $100 to license the track, I'd tell them to go take a flying leap....however, if Disney offered them a reasonable fair-value sum, and Criterion were the ones who refused it and demanded some outrageous sum instead, then if I was Disney I'd have to say "no thanks" as well....this situation just reminds me of what happens with a lot of TV shows and music licensing or replacement....

Hmmm.....DVD Active is now claiming that this upcoming boxset (and an individual re-release) of Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, scheduled for November 17th, will be a new edition featuring all of the original SE DVD bonus features....

http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releas...ollection.html

I hope this is true, we'll see....

The difference between Halloween/The Rock and Chasing Amy is that Criterion still has rights to distribute the DVD, which is not out of print. Thus, the commentary remains a valuable commodity for them in the way that Halloween and The Rock's extras don't.

Maybe we did (I haven't looked back through the thread) but were we already aware that Clerks. had "Oh, What a Lovely Tea Party" on it? If they really did upgrade Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, though, that makes it weird that they didn't change it and include the doc on the same disc, though.

ETA: everyone should ask Kevin on Twitter about Jay and Silent Bob (www.twitter.com/ThatKevinSmith) and perhaps he'll see one of them.

What happens if Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is the original Blu-ray and just a DVD of disc two from the original two-disc DVD set? That could always be a possibility and the reasoning why Clerks has the "Oh, What a Lovely Tea Party" documentary.

I'd be alright with that.

I'm fine with that too. As long as it allows me to ditch my DVD.

DVD Active apparently had their info wrong and it was all just a false alarm....the J&SBSB BD being released in the box set is (unfortunately) the exact same one that has been available since 2006 according to this new review posted at DVD Authority:

http://www.dvdauthority.com/reviews.asp?reviewid=6152

Oddly enough, their review states it has an AVC encode, but I am guessing that is just a mistake they made as the disc actually uses MPEG-2....

FWIW, Criterion's The Rock DVD appears to be in print.

J&SB is the same disc. I'll have a my friend take another look at it to see if the encode is different but I doubt it.

Hmmm, I can't remember why I said that, but I still expect Criterion sells far more copies of Chasing Amy even today than they have ever sold of The Rock, in no small part because a) Chasing Amy is often $14.99 and b) I have only once, if ever, seen The Rock for sale in a brick and mortar store.

I'll agree w/ that. I had to get The Rock online. The movie would be so much without Cage's character and anything associated w/ him directly in the plot. Ed Harris was badass in it. Connery was Connery. While a bit beyond belief at times I enjoyed it.

Chasing Amy on the other hand is everywhere.

First review I have seen for Clerks is up at blu-ray.com here:

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Clerks...y-Review/6371/

Looks good to me...everything is carried over from the Clerks X 3-disc set, plus the new 91 minute making of J&SBSB....can't wait for next Tuesday! (Or Monday night I guess, I'll be getting it at midnight, as Moviestop is doing a midnight sale for Star Trek, but I was told I can get everything I already have pre-ordered there then!)

Glad I held off on getting the Clerks X DVD.

I'm anxiously awaiting a review on the Chasing Amy BD. It's my favorite movie and I heard some really bad things about the Canadian Release.

November 17th is going to be an expensive day.

Not so sure...

(For those wanting to read, the general consensus is that the Canadian disc is more true to the film while Disney has boosted some things for the American release. And I sold my CA copy already...fuck).

The U.S. release looks better to me. Sorry, that's just my opinion based on the pics... neither look perfect, but I'll be going with the U.S. release for sure.

I'm okay with it. I'm buying it for the special features. If it looks bad, I have the Criterion DVD still, which I had to save for the audio commentary.

Vincent Pereira posted this in that thread though:

"I spoke to Dave Klein on the set of A COUPLE OF DICKS this summer, and he did approve the Miramax Blu-ray transfer. Disney gave him the option to go in and do additional clean-up but he opted not to because, in his own words, "It is what it is. That's what the movie looks like." He told me it was a 2K scan of the 35mm InterPositive and it's "the best the film can look". I'm guessing the Canadian release is based on an older HD telecine, as opposed to a fresh 2K scan like the Disney/Miramax."

If the film's Director of Photography himself approved the transfer, then I am satisfied that it must look how it should....

Thanks for the link Gizmo!

Hopefully some more reviews will pop up between now and Tuesday.
