I won't miss the unwieldy accordion package tho!

I don't get this Cameron doesn't have time business.... if you knew your films were out there not looking as good as they could and should, and you could make some extra cash by taking a couple hours to look over a new transfer... what's the hold up?

It's called making a new movie. FYI, it can often be a bit of a time commitment.

the dude's just busy.

there's a 2-3 year old 16x9 transfer of The Abyss just sitting there waiting for his approval. That's why we haven't seen an upgraded version of that movie

I always keep my DVDs when I upgrade. My DVDs are routinely played in a dozen different places (living room, bedroom, car, work, sister's home, Mom's, etc). Only one of those places has blu-ray.

Especially for a notorious perfectionist like Cameron... makes no sense.

Dude, do you have any idea of the logistics and resources that go into filmmaking at the James Cameron budgetary level? Cameron has a long-running reputation for consistently being the first on his sets and the last to leave every day. During production, he probably gets less than three hours of sleep a night. It's not like he's sitting in a trailer, playing solitaire and sad that no one has anything for him to do.

He's also notorious for micro-managing every member of his crew.

That may be, but the point is that he wouldn't have much time to work on anything else while making a movie, let alone with the scope of Avatar.

As much as I detest micro-management (and find it largely counter-productive), with the logistics involved in his movies, I'm not sure I could blame him.

I was hoping they'd drop the Quadrilogy title... esp if in a few yrs it's going to be outdated if they follow thru with the new Alien... why not "collection" or "legacy"...

Because Quadrilogy describes what it is at this point. The name can't get outdated, because you can't retroactively add future Alien movies to your existing box set. If a fifth Alien movie does come out later, they will still have all applicable terms such as Legacy or Anthology available for the newer set that would include all five movies. Don't get me wrong, I think "Quadrilogy" sounds stupid, but I don't blame them for using it.

Well, "tetralogy" would. "Quadrilogy" is a fake word.

Since "Quadrilogy" isn't a real word, it can be used for the Alien set no matter how many films there are in the series.

Actually, you'd think it would be the opposite. With productions on the scale of those Cameron makes, you need to hire good people and trust them do their jobs. It's just not productive for the director to be ripping lights out of his gaffers' hands and placing them himself because he doesn't trust that they'll get the angle right (an actual story I've heard).

But, as they say, what matters are the results. Cameron always gets the job done, and gets it done the way he wants it. So, from that perspective, you can't fault his process, even if it means that he doesn't make a lot of friends in the industry.

They're not coming out by the end of the year. I think we know that so far.

Yep. He's had no free time for the past ten years to approve transfers. Docs, cameos on entourage, but we can't get a proper The Abyss?
I think I'll die before I get the abyss

During an interview for the Los Angeles Times to promote the theatrical release of 'Avatar', actress Sigourney Weaver (who plays a botanist in James Cameron's movie) discussed all her movie career and her status as "queen of sci-fi". She also revealed that in the weeks to come, she will record a commentary for the upcoming Blu-ray release of the 'Alien' tetralogy.

“I've never done that, watched all of [the Alien movies] in a row,” Weaver said. “I just recently made my [19-year-old] daughter watch them. She had never seen them before, believe it or not. I think she just prefers to think of me as good ol' mom, you know, not some person running around a spaceship with a flamethrower.”

Well, if she is recording in a few weeks, this thing is still a good 6 months away at a minimum. Thanks for the update.

This is about a month old (Nov 04, 2009), but I didn't see it posted here:

"We've reconfirmed with our studio and industry sources that the long-awaited Alien Anthology box set is on track for Blu-ray release sometime in 2010 from Fox, including all four films in the series, all of the Alien Quadrilogy DVD box set bonus content and substantial new, BD-exclusive material as well. "

Tetralogy?

A tetralogy is a compound work that is made up of four (numerical prefix tetra-) distinct works, just as a trilogy is made up of three works.

Well, considering there are 4 alien movies...

I think he's (correctly!) complaining about the continued use of "quadrilogy". It's a made-up word.

I've always preferred "Alien Saga". That sounds better, and can encompass any number of movies they want.
