God, you know I hate to say this, but RH is a bit of dick. He was just so arrogant at times on HTF. He could never accept that he could fuck up, and always had some stupid excuse handy.

Here are two reviews of the transfer. One from Robert Harris who I trust knows a thing or two about film.

"The HD video master of Ivan Reitman's 1984 Ghostbusters had the input of cinematographer Laszlo Kovacs, and as such must be considered incontestable as far as a Blu-ray is concerned.

Those who saw the film theatrically 25 years ago, may or may not recall that the look varied from sequence to sequence. While some interiors seemed to have a pushed, grainy look, fully exposed exteriors appeared to have far less apparent grain. Some of the film is sharp, some parts lesser so.

Created from an archival 35mm interpositive, what has been delivered via Blu-ray is Ghostbusters as it originally looked, and I couldn't be happier.

I'm certain that there will be some who will find the grain too course, to evident, too brown, too angular, not pretty enough, or in one of my favorite phrases, simply about one would expect from an old (read: antique) film from a bygone era.

Love it or hate, this is Ghostbusters as created and released in 1984."

And another review that also mentions the image quality but gives it high marks despite the heavy grain.

So I think Sony is doing a great job presenting films as they should look on Blu-ray unlike some studios that love to destroy the quality of the image to placate those who hate grain and expect everything to 'pop' off the screen at them in a misguided understanding of what 'HD' is.
personally I dont believe that statement.

A 70mm print is being shown at the Seattle Cinerama later this month: April 28th 3:30pm

and I'd love to know if the 35mm/70mm blowup looks anything like the bluray - I seriousily doubt it!

At least that 4K initiative is getting us (presumably) better quality for catalog titles. I wonder if their version of On the Waterfront will trump Criterion's.

They sure make some odd selections. Groundhog Day? Can't say I've ever thought of that as a visually striking feel in need of Ultra HD.

I am curious to see how GB turns out, though.

Dammit was hoping this thread was being bumped for the announcement of Ghostbusters 2 on Blu-ray.

If that happens, I have very high hopes there will be a separate thread for it.

I was hoping for an announcement that they were going to do a proper edition of the first movie that included the MST3K style commentary.

way to go and screw the Criterion edition.

as for Ghostbusters - they have to do some serious scrubbing (DN'ring) to eliminate all that ugly graininess.

I realize this isn't the best thread to be talking about this, but I'm pretty sure the Criterion On the Waterfront uses the new 4k restoration.

actually yes, (my bad assumption), according to Criterion's listing it is.. thank god.

PQ/AQ stats:
- New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition
- Alternate presentations of the restoration in two additional aspect ratios: 1.85:1 (widescreen) and 1.33:1 (full-screen)
- Alternate 5.1 surround soundtrack, presented in DTS-HD Master Audio on the Blu-ray edition

The grain on the last Blu-ray was exaggerated by the contrast boosting and other digital manipulations. With a fresh film scan, the movie shouldn't look anywhere near that bad.

+1
Sony's team gets praised up and down, but their work on the Ghostbusters' transfer was questionable at best.

that's an understatement ... watching the bluray makes me want to throw something at my tv.
