Well done, but the ending was brutal. Oof.

Knock Knock

Was it a suspense movie or a comedy with Keanu's acting?

One of the favorites for the season

Not bad. I know it's hack but I would have loved a cameo from Robert Vaughn or David Macallum

In the way that American Sniper showed the effects of PTSD, Good Kill shows the stress and guilt associated with piloting drones and killing from afar. If people felt AS was jingoistic and glamourized the war, they won't feel that about Good Kill. Pretty much the entire cast is practically suicidal. If you want to be depressed watch this movie.

Watching the featurette, it was made clear they really weren't trying to make entertainment. They succeeded. They were making a statement on drone warfare. The lead characters are Ethan Hawke who is a depressed alcoholic. His co-pilot is Zoe Kravits who comes in gung ho then starts crying when she sees what is happening. Secondary characters provide the arguments for continuing; they would still kill us anyway, its not like they'd like us better if we didn't drone strike, before this we captured them but that was seen as torture, etc. So they do try and present both sides of the argument. Just the pro is presented in muted fashion.

Regardless of which side of the argument you are on, it will make you think.

Personally I don't care for the program. I think it's disingenuous to get on the high moral horse against water boarding but then blowing the shit out of them along with collateral damage that goes with it. Collateral damage is way up and you don't get any intel.

Obviously no easy answer either way you look at it.

I am in the minority but I liked Good Kill and thought Hawke was great in that movie.

Trainwreck

The best comedy of 2015 not that Hollywood makes a lot of comedy movies and there is not a big selection to choose from.

A touching, beautifully animated story. I've read that Studio Ghibli's fate is still up in the air following Miyazaki's retirement. This feature (produced without his direct involvment) does his legacy proud, so I really hope they keep it going.

from

Spoiler:
Wanted to see TFA, but am dreading experiencing the mass of humanity crammed into the mutliplex.
However that got me remembering another big budgeted, much ballyhooed Christmas released sci-fi/fantasy representing a much loved, resurrected property. Fans were treated to seeing beloved characters, now older and grayer, along with spectacular visuals and a plot that was basically a mash-up/re-mix of stories they were already well familiar with.

For all it's faults (a good 1/4 of the film's run time is made up of shots of the characters silently reacting to what they are seeing on a monitor which eventually becomes laughable after a certain point) I actually dig this film more and more, each time I see it.

It is slow. But part of that is because it is also earnestly reverent to it's source material. And I find that, along with its high falootin' attempt at being intellectual, charming. I also appreciate that they actually had the balls to go with a G rating and didn't try to goose it just to get a more respectable PG to make it seem cooler to the a-hole tweens and teens. I still enjoy Wrath Of Khan, but there's things about this that just rub me the right way.

Another part of the impetus to watch this again was that I'm currently lusting after the 3 disc Goldsmith score. I was thinking watching this again my sate my desire for a while, but if anything I'm just more eager now to get it. One of the best scores from the 70's - which was a decade full of amazing soundtracks. Between the awesome score and the lush visuals, this is great film to just lie back and soak in.

My son and I will see it eventually but both of us agreed we'll wait until after the Christmas break so hopefully it will be sane again.

Terminator Genisys - Not bad,I liked the action. No one watches it for the doo-doo infested storyline anymore, right?

Polar Express Fired up the HD player for the Tom Hanks show

Surviving Christmas Intellectually I know it's a lousy movie. Somehow I seem to return to it every Christmas.
