In 1913, an amateur golfer and caddie competed in the US Open against a champion English golfer. This story is a great movie and a beautiful Blu-ray. One of my favorites. Shows the early years of eliteism and snobbery of the game. you don't need to be a golfer to enjoy this movie.

A Byzantium/Byzanium double feature!

In every way, shape, and form so much better than any of the other sexy women vampire movies I've ever seen- Inlcuding the two Ingrid Pitt classics still waiting on the shelf. Literate, fresh take on the material with beautiful performances all around.
One thing I couldn't help thinking as I watched it- how much I'm disappointed now that Saorise Ronan isn't the Scarlet Witch. I think Whedon's film got the shorter end of the stick there.

Hilariously absurd on so many levels. I caught this at the theater back in 1980 and only recently got curious to see it again- for nostalgia sake.
I can honestly say I enjoyed it quite a bit more this time- going in with absolutely no expectations of high adventure. A leisurely paced, shaggy dog story populated by some wonderful actors long since departed.
Shouts disc looked and sounded great. No issues with the technical presentation whatsoever. Happy I bought it. It will definitely get another watch somewhere down the line.

saw the rental disc before but saw the extened version tonight. Since Emma Roberts is way too young I'll just have to lust after jennifer Aniston even more.

Robocop
It was ok with better actors than the original but the 1987 movie is still better.

The Pit & The Pendulum from

Fun, hammy performance from Price along with a brief, but electrifying cameo from Barbara Steele. Twelve years ago I saw this prior to seeing Fall/Usher and came away liking this quite a bit more. This time I watched Usher first and it was Pit that didn't seem quite as spectacular as I'd remembered. Part of the problem is the similarity of the set up and initial acts. But they deviate and compliment each other well in their respective climaxes...and P&TP definitely hits the end credits with one of my favorite moments in any horror movie.

Interesting, odd duck of a film. Chartered plane with a small, disparate group of people crash in the desert and try to survive. The Baboons that adorn the key art figure in the film, but not to the extent I expected. In fact, much of the film contained things I didn't expect...but that rang so cynically true for the situation. More concerned with social and gender dynamics of a group under extreme conditions than it is an adventure romp.
Interesting to me that the cast contains two performers destined to go to Krypton about ten years later (York and Harry "Jor-el, be reasonable!" Andrews). Great performances all around and intellectually satisfying, if not necessarily viscerally satisfying.

For about the first 15 minutes, it really felt like comfort food. But an hour in the choppiness, low rent stock characters, and general witlessness of the situations of this edited down pilot starts to seriously tax the patience. Image looks pretty great though. And this is the first time I've ever noticed that the Imperious Leader has a live pet lizard on his shoulder.

Thief looked just fine to me (more comments in the other thread). Good movie that for me somehow manages to seem a little lesser than the sum of it's parts.
First time I can recall seeing Used Cars in it's entirety. About what I expected. Some very funny scenes, but not enough of them and the ending is a hoary late 70's/early 80's staple..devolving into what is essentially a big car chase. Amusing for the nostalgia and the cameos, but something I would have felt much better paying a Mill Creek price for and not a TT one. Image looked great, but I can't imagine this one selling out in three years.

Anyway, I started watching season 1 of Bates Motel on BD this weekend. Wow. The first episode already has me on edge in an awesome way. I also finished watching the 1st season of Avengers (animated) (BD only available in Canada to my knowledge), fantastic and completely worth importing. One of the few cartoons that really builds throughout the entire season and into the next.

It really was a pretty well-made flick. I remember there being some backlash about it, but I enjoyed my second viewing of it.

The Grand Budapest Hotel
4:3 was annoying but it was not bad.
At first I thought it was Alan Arkin shirtless but then realized it was Harvey Keitel lol.
I want Mendels!
