Saving Private Ryan--They need to go back and take Shakespeare in Love's best picture Oscar and give it to SPR. It's not too late. Looked and sounded superb on blu.

Think I have a spending problem when I buy this movie just because it was $9.99 at Best Buy, not a movie that really benefits from Blu-ray but it was cheap so i bought it |

Mission Impossible Yeah I know, plot holes big enough to drive a truck through but still some decent intrigue

Victor Fleming's THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939) - saw it for the first time, then watched it two more times (days apart). My initial nitpicks, like Margaret Hamilton, eventually melted and I just got sucked-in by Judy Garland's charm (her vulnerability and still-palpable innocence totally sells the flick's fantasy angst) and the catchiness of (most of its) tunes; 'We're Off To See The Wizard' is now part of my MP3 heavy rotation. Hate the Munchkins though (and their sped-up voices) and Bert Lahr's Cowardly Lion gets on my nerves after a while.
Alfred Hitchcock's NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959) - saw this for the first time, then watched it again after that with the Ernest Lehman commentary track (nice man but he leaves way too many dead spots). What else can I do but join the chorus: this is the mother of all Hitchcock flicks. Grant is effortlessly cool even when he's over his head; James Mason was born to play suave villains (that voice!) and, even though at first I resented Eva Marie Saint for not being Grace Kelly, eventually I was won over by her performance. Martin Landau is cool but creepy-looking as a too-attached-to-the-boss henchman. Colorful set-pieces (that plane chase blew my mind!) and a light 'Bond' air keep this thing moving and never boring. Blu-ray transfer is superb but a few better (less general) extras would have been nice. Loved it. Alan Resnais' LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD (1961) - found the whole love triangle aspect of "Marienbad" rather romantic and even touching despite the distance the filmmakers put between us, the characters and this... time and place they seem to be stuck in. Even though it's technique ahead of heart (B&W photography looks fine on Blu) the actors sell their minimalist roles with gusto. Michelangelo Antonioni's RED DESERT (1964) - took two viewings (the first left me so puzzled and confused I didn't know if I liked the movie or not) for me to 'get' "Red Desert." While not as open to interpretation as I was led to believe (the commentary pretty much lays it as is) this is still a gorgeous and meditative look at modernism's toll on a person ill-prepared to handle it. Richard Harris' performance is hurt by his Italian voice-over guy (too distracting) but Vitti's performance and Antonioni's techniques (painting stuff for it to look a certain way on-camera) trump the movie's flaws without completely eliminating them. An acquired taste. |

Caddyshack - If you're on the fence & have the DVD, buy the BD! I wasn't in a hurry to watch it, figured it was a standard catalog type upgrade..and it might be. But do 1 DVD/Blu comparison: Rodney hits the ball & it hits Ted Knight. Watch the ball as it's in mid-air. Either I've been watching Blu's for too long, or this BD is a significant upgrade in PQ. SQ is good, but not great, extras are good. Overall very solid.

Mad Men--Season One, disc 1--Very excited to be catching up, as my wife and I only started with season 4. We're hoping to be through the first 3 seasons by the end of the month. Transfer is one of the best I've seen. I'm not an expert, but it looked flawless to me.

I think both are equally underserving of the Oscar, SPR is my least favorite war film of all-time, but considering the pandering Holllywood-drivel that it is, I'm actually shocked it didn't win best picture.

This is a fantastic film and I could probably watch it every night if the bass wasn't so house rattling at times (sleeping two-year old). Some people think it's a bit too long...but it's perfect to me...and it's one of my all-time favorites. |

Contact - This movie seemed like it had so many different smaller movies jammed into it, but it worked. I thought it would really drag on, but I was hooked from the moment the initial shot zooms away from Earth. Amazing movie.

^ I saw that the movie was 3D'd for a 3D system (I think it was Panasonic) at Best Buy on Monday.
just watched Akira and mother of god, to say that the Japanese TrueHD soundtrack is the best I've heard might be an understatement, why can't more movies sound THIS good??? |

Caught in the Crossfire - It starred 50 Cent and Chris Klein. Do you even need to ask? It also has the single worst example of picture quality on a BD I can recall. Absymal in every sense of the word.
