The A/V quality was good, but the movie was very disappointing; it felt like Hogwarts 90210. Was the book laced with as much of the relationship stuff as the movie?

The book had relationship stuff - yes, but it was actually quite different. And the bulk of the book was about Voldemort's past (and so little of this made it's way into the film) and there is also a strong focus on Snape. This movie was a giant disappointment.

Christmas Vacation for the second time in as many weeks. Not a real exciting HD presentation. Picked it up last year when Blockbuster had their $5 used sale.

Dark Crystal - I never saw this movie as a kid, I wasn't even born when it came out. If I had, it probably would have scared the shit out of me. I think I loved the scenery and creatures more than the movie itself. Its an amazing piece of film, something that would never get made now. Scenes like all the little things in the swamp or just when the Skesksies were eating amazed me. Blu-Ray didn't blow me away, I'd rate it as average at a best. Thought the sound was kind of weak & dipped in parts.

Just watched BRUNO with the video commentary.... highly entertaining and makes me appreciate the movie a whole lot more. Just a great, informative, fun track from start to finish.

I just finished Batman: The Movie. Some of the rear-projection scenes looked pretty bad, but otherwise I was impressed. I never noticed until this viewing that each of the four villains (Joker, Riddler, Catwoman and Penguin) have their own personalized door on the bridge of the Penguin's sub, or that there is a question mark in the middle of the Riddler's binoculars. I'm sure these things were visible in standard definition, but I never caught them until now. I also enjoyed the new 2008 bonus interviews with comic creators about the series and the movie.

Ghost in the Shell 2.0 - Pretty cool anime, but the new 2.0 effects looked terrible.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation - Looks decent on HD, never gets old.

Last week I saw the original 1995 "GITS" for the first time (included in the 2.0 Blu-ray as a bonus) and loved it. Couple of nights ago I checked out the new paint job Oshii-san slapped on his baby. Ouch! :( I can tolerate the new orange tint since it's consistent with the sequel (which I haven't seen but will soon) and the enhanced CG tinkers pay off at the end with one helluva final shot that is much more powerful and imposing than the original ending (I felt chills). Problem is the CG during the opening scenes, credits (horrible, plus the missing sound effects are dearly missed) and most of the helicopter shots feel either misplaced, unnecessary or just plain wrong (why the shattered glass from the helicopter bullets?). Shame because the high-def transfer itself is aces and shows off the movie's still-impressive cinematography and artwork at the service of a deep philisophical plot masquarading as an animated action flick. Sound is crystal-clear and stunning (Kenji Kowan's music and the machine gun battles particularly) but I only made it to the 15 min. mark with the English dub before switching over to Japanese and Eng. subtitles. English subs. or death! :p

Inglorious Basterds. Easily in my top 3 of the year. Gorgeous presentation.

The timeless Holiday classic Audtion. Probably doesn't say much about me that I find nothing shocking or cringe-worthy about the ending. I've always loved the movie & think it holds up very well. PQ isn't that great on the Blu but I'm sure its the best the film has ever looked.

Night of the Creeps (1986). Nice transfer, but not the kind that makes you go "wow."

Finished my first Blu-Ray last night: Snow White! Still hard to comprehend how good they made a 72 year old movie look, although the SD-DVD is no slouch.

Started the Dark Knight after that, which really makes it hard to go back to the SD edition of that one.

Night Of The Creeps

Awesome film. Solid P/Q. Never thought I'd ever see this one released in my lifetime.

In the Line of Fire - loved it. Can't believe I missed out on this for the past 15 years. John Malkovich was masterful in it.

Comedies are one of the best examples of where seeing it in the tehater with a good crowd really makes the movie. I saw this twice in the theater and it is one of my favorites in recent years,
