I ended up watching The Good The Bad The Weird tonight myself (the Canadian E1 release, which I believe is the same as the US MPI release). I'll post my thoughts on the quality in that thread.

Speed Racer (2008) - I've heard this get a lot of flack, but I thought it was amazing. It did a wonderful job of re-creating the feel of the TV show, one of my childhood favorites.

The Haunted World of El Superbeasto (2009) - Complete crap.

Toy Story 2 (1999) - Not as good as the first, but still quite enjoyable. Looking forward to seeing the third.

I thought this was the strongest of the now-trilogy, personally. The theme of the Toy Story films is a simple one: finding one's place in a changing world. For me, I found Woody's arc--finding out he could be a very big fish in another pond--very compelling. The moment he elects not to escape with the rest of Andy's toys is pretty powerful; it doesn't just suggest that he's been tempted by vanity, but that he's thought through where his place in the world will be soon, and that he has different responsibilities to different people.

Jessie's song montage kills me each and every time, too. Also, I found the humor a bit sharper in this one; things like Rex approaching the side mirror of the car was unexpected and the showdown/reveal with Zurg was hilarious.

I can see that. The humor and the Woody story are quite good, probably better than the first one. But Jessie totally drags the movie down a notch for me. I completely dislike her voice and pretty much the entire character.

She's pretty hyper, that's for sure, but I thought it suited the character. Jessie is a 1950s TV cowgirl; a tomboy meant to appeal to girls while not alienating boys. I thought Joan Cusak did a great job investing enthusiasm in the character--and I felt her practically yelling all the time went well with the aesthetics of the character's appearance. Look at those huge eyes and large grin--this was never a character designed for subtlety or calmness.

But, of course, this is the kind of thing that ultimately comes down to personal taste.

In hindsight, and overall, I actually find the first TS to be a lot more shrill than the sequel.

Annoying/yelling/screaming - a grating childishness that is toned down in the sequel.

Toy Story 2 definitely has a more conversational tone than its predecessor; not sure I would go so far as to say the first one was "annoying" or "grating."

I did say only in comparison to the second one, and not to something like, say, The Goonies, which is the epitome of shrill.

I felt the same exact way when I watched it, it was a pretty damn entertaining movie and it looked unbelievable.

Finally saw that film about a year ago and couldn't stand it. Shrill is right. I am convinced that the only people who love it are the ones who saw it as a kid, and that they were probably annoying kids themselves....

I guess that explains why director's like Peter Jackson regard it as one of their all time favorite films. It all makes sense now! ;)

The Runaways I was never really into Joan Jett but I grew up during that era so the clothes, cars and music was a kick.

Just finished The Princess and the Frog. Easily the most impressive work from Disney since The Lion King for my taste. Our disc froze twice in the last chapter, though. It did this the other time we watched it, and I was hoping the firmware update would have resolved the issue. Looks like I'll be contacting Disney... :-/

I know it's practically heresy, but the third one was the only one I really enjoyed. Yes, they squandered "The Dark Phoenix Saga," but within the confines of the story being told I thought it made sense to truncate all that. The first one drones on too long at points and the showdown at the Statue of Liberty just feels like the kind of obligatory set piece of any summer action movie.

The second one has some good performances, but I found myself not really caring what happened to anyone halfway through the movie. It was hard to care at all in the end.

The Breakfast Club--Really loved this when I saw it in the theaters, but always had trouble with it after that. Probably hadn't seen it in 10 years and I was shocked at how well it's held up and how much my opinion of the film has come around full circle. I, however, just didn't see a 4 star PQ in my opinion.

Machine Gun McCain - I was blown away by how good this movie looked. Movies like this are my absolute favorite Blu-Ray releases, way more than modern special effects films like Avatar or whatever. Dirty 70s Italian crime, Peter Falk, John Cassavetes, an Ennio Morricone score & a machine gun. Thats the stuff right there.

The Crazies, having everything quiet and then turning up the music to ear blasting levels does not scare me, it only annoys me.

Heartbreak Kid "F*** me like a black guy Eddie!!" Malin Akerman did an amazing job of being totally annoying yet hot.
