Re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!

Can somebody post pictures of the "steelbook?" From what I've read, it seems like the slipcover is actually nicer.

Also, can someone post pictures of the inside of the steelbook or the regular case. I just can't imagine how they will stick 6 discs in there.

Here you go. The quality isn't great, just what I could grab with my cell phone, but you get the idea:

Man, I look at this thread and feel like a noob as I pass my 8 year anniversary.

Does anybody still watch the theatrical versions? I thought I would, so I have them, but...I don't. I want EE in HD.

I prefer the EEs for Fellowship of the Ring and Return of the King, but the theatrical for The Two Towers. The completionist in me wants to have both versions of both movies, though.

Thanks for the pictures. What's your opinion of the steelbook? It looks kind of shoddy to me. I'll probably get the regular slipcover version or skip this altogether.

I skimmed the last couple pages, but I'm still confused, can someone run down the releases for me? There's a standard edition, a Canadian steelbook and a different US steelbook? Which one is pictured above? What are the prices?

It's pretty much like the "Up" Steelbook, if you've seen that. Thicker, obviously, to make room for the extra disc holders, so the middle plastic piece is larger. The steel does feel thinner than some Steelbooks I've seen, but it's still nice. The cover art, front and back, is printed on paper rather than on the steel itself, but that's because it was printed on foil paper to give it the rainbow effect that the slipcover will have.

Really, buying the Steelbook is a no-brainer. You still get the slipcover and regular cases that comes with the standard release. You would just move the discs and inserts into the Steelbook. If you decide you don't want the Steelbook, I'm sure you could sell it on eBay a month or so after release and make at least a little profit.

Re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!

Thinking ahead here, but when the EEs finally roll out on Blu, is there any chance they'll be able to include the features on single discs?

Return of the King, the longest, runs at about 4:23 and has four commentary tracks. Probably pushing the capacity of blu-ray unless they start doing more than two data layers. I would be willing to sacrifice the ten minutes of fan club credits and the commentary tracks (or push them onto BDL) to accommodate a single disc.

Re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!

From the Blu-ray.com forum, someone posted a link to another site that compares the first film's BD transfer to the DVD.

I'm no expert, but it looks like a substantial improvement to me. If I can get the trilogy for the price I intend to get it for (~$13 per film) then I'm upgrading my 2-disc Theatrical Edition DVDs on April 6.

Part of me still isn't sure why I'm buying these BDs though, as I've only watched my DVDs of the LOTR trilogy once. Oh well.

EDIT: It appears I may have been passing on incorrect info, as that website I linked to above may not be comparing the BD and the DVD after all, just the HD broadcast. I may still get this if I can get my target price.

Many might disagree but I'll do the same as I did with the DVDs: Buy the theatrical releases first then the EEs later on.

I used to be in that boat until I wouldn't watch those editions before the new ones came out. Now I buy the stuff I know I'll watch right away and Netflix the rest.

What a disappointment. We can only hope they'll improve for the EE's.

Here's hoping the EE don't end up so disappointing.

It sounds like this is yet another New Line transfer from that time that doesn't hold up for HD. Too bad Warner didn't do new transfers. You'd think these would merit them.

What? A Canada only deal as best DotY? It's a silly topic to think about but Princess & the Frog, Toy Story 1 & 2 all for $2 each at every TRU across America would probably get the edge for that honor.

Holy Shit. Boy am I glad I ordered a copy from FS too. Still waiting on my e-mail (assuming I get one), but as long as my order is still alive I'm happy. Good for them to do this for their customers this time.

This and the TRU deal on Toy Story 1 and 2 just made my week!

While the $18.99 error is amazing, the $49.99 price is still nice. Wish we had that pricing down here.
