Hard to get excited for a set that doesn't include both versions of each film. Though, if the price is right...

Decisions, decisons. Get theatrical now or wait for eventual EE's. May have to join "if the price is right......"

If I didn't think the theatrical cuts of Fellowship and ROTK were superior, I'd wait. But since I do prefer the TC's of those two, I'll end up getting it.

I agree about TTT and RotK, but I'm pretty sure I remember thinking FotR's EE was pretty right on.

Right, see I inferred he liked the TTT:EE because he didn't say he preferred its TC, and with him I agreed

re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!

TTT goes from the worst of the three as a TC to the best of the three as the EE. Fellowship had some good stuff, but also a lot of fluff like Frodo waking up to hear Aragorn singing and so on. I understand that those things are part of the world, but when the movies get so long, the little touches need to get left out.

Also, the EE of ROTK actually ruins the movie for me. In the TC, Aragorn goes to the City of the Dead and asks for their help, and you don't know what the outcome is until they arrive in Gondor. In the EE, they ruin the suspense twice, once by having the dead king appear and agreeing to help, and another time by showing them attacking the boats, in a sequence that was clearly only included because the crew of the ship is the crew of the film. And really interesting moments like Aragorn wrestling away the use of the seeing stone is also done poorly in the EE. The only addition that really felt necessary was the fate of Saruman.

I'm really on the fence. If the price is right then I might bite.

while his character arch was finally concluded - it's interesting to hear Peter and Fran's take on the addition of the scene in that even though reinstated they are not so keen on the scene on the whole - it sounds like they were just trying to appease the fans on this editorial decision (and those of us who saw the first batch of stills of the trilogy in Entertainment Weekly that featured Saruman's demise in on the set in green screen form)

For me, the EE of ROTK is a slippery slope. There are scenes included that I feel greatly improve the story (confrontation with Saruman, the Witch-King breaking Gandalf's staff, and the message from the Mouth of Saruon), but there's also the reveal of the Army of the Dead which is spoiled by the earlier scene with the Corsairs.

For RoTK were those added scenes in the books or just for the EE?

Yeah, but they then gush over the Corsair scene where they're all in it, so I can't really trust all their decisions with ROTK. But seriously, from a storytelling point of view, it's necessary to have some conclusion with Saruman. He was the main villain of the previous film.

I forgot about the breaking of the staff, which I liked. The Mouth of Sauron didn't really add much, except to reveal that Aragorn thought Frodo was dead, hence his comment "For Frodo" being a little more in context.

what do you mean?- Saruman's demise in the book was in the Scouring of the Shire scene, but I'm sure you know that already.

re: Lord of The Rings on Blu-Ray in 2010!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the confrontation with Saruman does occur in the book, but his death doesn't occur until way later during the Scouring of the Shire. Gandalf and the Witch-King due go head-to-head so to speak, but I believe that happens at the gates of Minas Tirith, not some random spot in the city. Also, the Mouth of Sauron part is in the book, but I'm pretty sure Aragorn doesn't behead him.

Yes, I am aware of that, and am very, very glad that wasn't included in the movie, as ROTK already had enough endings for two more trilogies.
