Superman Returns BLU-RAY Re-release 9/9/08 (With TrueHD and PCM Audio)
FINALLY! This film has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard.
"In an early announcement to retailers, Warner Home Video has revealed that they will re-release the Bryan Singer film 'Superman Returns' on September 9th with a Dolby TrueHD and PCM soundtracks. To the disappointment of fans, the original Blu-ray release featured only a Dolby Digital soundtrack while the HD DVD got the lossless audio track. Warner is now rectifying the situation with a proper Blu-ray release.
Editions of 'Superman Returns' with the Dolby TrueHD soundtrack were originally made available in a limited quantity with the purchase of certain Pioneer Blu-ray players. Since that time, fans have been eagerly awaiting Warner to re-release the title with the upgraded soundtrack.
No other specs are expected to change for the re-release. The release has been given a UPC code."

Too bad this movie was so bad. I'm a big Superman fan, and I barely made it through the thing.

I don't know why he bothered even reading the thread if he doesn't like the movie.

I hope this doesn't turn into a "I hated it" thread. There's already two going on over on the movie discussion group. At any rate, I'll be double dipping for this for sure. As it's one of my favorite films.

They shouldn't. There is no error on the first version. It was advertised to have Dolby Digital 5.1 audio only. You knew what you were buying. Unlike Terminator 3, where they advertised 1080p video, when in fact, it was 1080i. That is a reason to offer an exchange.

I wouldn't say they should or shouldn't (as you did).

Studios often offer rebates that have nothing at all to do with "mistakes", like the Who Framed Roger Rabbit DVD had a coupon for $5 back if you had the old single-disc, or Crimson Tide, The Rock and Enemy of the State Blus had $10 off if you owned the DVD versions -- a rebate and a refund/exchange program are totally different things.

I agree a rebate should be offered. Same thing with the Universal titles on hd-dvd.
For example, if you bought Casino on HD-DVD, you should get a rebate coupon for the bluray version (not just the DVD version).
That said, they SHOULD offer it.....I just think its smart business, not necessarily a requirement (like replacement offers).

That said, I really wish that this re-release would include additional features, such as the "Return To Krypton" sequence.

I agree 100%. It seems that one can't discuss any film without others getting bogged down on its merits. All the STAR WARS threads become so predictable, even if the subject matter has to do with a small element of the movies or about other Lucasfilm projects: "the prequels sucked!" "I hate George Luca$" Waah, waah.
That said, I really wish that this re-release would include additional features, such as the "Return To Krypton" sequence.

Given today's news from Warners about the franchise, I think this should be called "Before it gets dark edition".

the movie was fine seeing it once, in IMAX, but seeing this multiple times just isn't my cup of tea.

I read that. But as of this date (August 24, 2008), there is no true understanding of what that WB exec meant by "reintroduce." Singer is still onboard, and the last statement before this one was that he was working with writers to follow up on SUPERMAN RETURNS but go in a new direction. We'll find out.

Rebate? Really?
Yeah, I want Universal, Paramount, Warner and Weinstein to all offer me free Blu-ray upgrades for the HD DVDs I purchases. Like that'll happen.

Now they want to make Superman dark. Great. Count me out. Superman has always been a boyscout and turning him into another Batman is not going to win me over.

Not required, it would just be a gesture of good will for this isolated incident where the original Blu-ray was inferior to the HD DVD.
BTW, the rebate I'm thinking of would be $10 (like Disney has been doing), not the full price of a new one.

This article saddened me. They just don't get it. Batman is a perfect character to do a dark story, but now since it was a success every superhero movie has to be dark and brooding. I really enjoyed Superman Returns. I saw the original Superman in the theater when it was released and all those same feelings came back watching Superman Returns in the theater and on HD DVD. Singer came up with the perfect way to do a Superman movie after a decade of bad scripts and bad ideas went down the toilet at Warner.

Absolutely. If the expression of WB is to make the next Superman dark just because TDK was a success, then it just shows you how creatively bankrupt and cowardly the studio is. Just as they thought of making Superman a bit MATRIX-y years ago when that movie came out, WB just wants a money-making film, no matter what the quality. Of course, they are within their rights to exploit and capitalize on their properties as they see fit, but their ideas here are shameless.

No, in this case it would be a rebate for those who purchased the first version of the Blu-ray with standard DD 5.1. It has nothing to do with the HD DVD which had Dolby True HD (and wouldn't be an upgrade).

The title is also nearly two years old...its due for a "re-release" in DVD world. If it was released a few months ago I would totally be on your side.

On the other hand, I thought Superman Returns was a big ol' tedious suck-fest, and anything they can do to wash the taste of it away will probably be a good thing.

Anyhow, back to the main topic...I believe (I could have been hallucinating) that I read somewhere about the Blu-ray undergoing a re-mastering - that it isn't all that it could be as far as high definition transfers are concerned.
Since the movie was shot digitally, I always thought that unless there were some technical screwups in the conversion department, what we see now is as good as it gets.
It would be nice to see the 3-D version on Blu-ray.
