Cloverfield -----> June 3rd, 2008 - Pictures + Impressions

Hey all.

Just got my screener copy of Cloverfield...

So far this looks amazing! The case has a new "Blu-ray sticker" as shown on the top image. This release also includes the very neat "New Secrets Revealed" security sticker that was present on the DVD.

I have yet to watch the film so I went ahead and skimmed through it. Looks pretty good. The TrueHD track is awesome! Easily one of the best the format has to offer from the few minutes I demoed.

I have the DVD so I wrote up a majority of the film synopsis and features (minus the 2 new features) almost 2 weeks ago after I requested the title. The movie came in today watched it and was blown away. A really solid re-entry title for Paramount!

Agreed. Its easily Paramounts best (if not any studio) Audio track Ive ever heard. PQ is actually pretty damn good too considering everyone was saying it was filmed poorly.

I saw this in a DLP theater and it was one of the best audio/video presentations ever. That is one thunderous soundtrack.

Flaw though: Special Investigation Mode, from the linked review, sounds different to me than the UK SD-DVD "during-the-movie" feature, so if it is, that would in my book be a big oversight from Paramount.

I'd love to review films for a site!...

I'm sick of paying for titles!

fixed.

You get to watch a ton of quality stuff when you review movies, but man when you get stinkers, they absolutely kill. Knowing you "HAVE TO" watch them.

Speaking of being a reviewer, what does it take for companies to send you a screener? I think my blogsite gets enough hits per day but I don't know if the companies are really anal with the review formats.

Looking forward to the sound on this one. Never caught it in theaters but was pleasantly surprised with the movie on DVD. With these reviews, already preordered on Amazon.

How does the "New Secrets Revealed" security sticker work: do you have to rip through it to open the case, or is it velcro or something?

It looks just like the one on the DVD, which was just like a security sticker.

I peeled it off the case and then re-applied it to the spine. Looks pretty nifty.

Here's a small exert from my review of it...

Blu-ray Exclusive Feature
Special Investigations Mode - A very nifty feature Paramount cooked up for this Blu-ray release. What this does is shrink the film to around 35% of its original size and pushes it to the upper right hand side of the screen. On the left portion of the screen is a map of Manhattan the shows us colored dots depending where the Humans, Military and Monster is. On the bottom portion of the screen is various factoids. While I did enjoy this feature, its not very interactive and simply gives us another way to watch the film. I will say it made watching the film a lot easier since you can focus your eyes at other things when the movie becomes too shaky.

Thanks for the suggestion, I did the same thing we mine. Looks way better not and it fits the spine perfectly.

Even though I bought the Steelbook DVD, I'm all for double-dipping tomorrow.

So does anyone know if all the extras they had planned and produced for the HD DVD made the Blu-ray? Information several months ago indicated that Paramount had made a lot of extras for the HD DVD release which may not all show up on the BD. Just wondering if there is significant double dip potential here?

Phantom,

Not all made it. Only the GPS Tracker. IIRC, there were 1 or 2 other features planned but scrapped. I don't think that was ever 'official' though.

They have to save something for the sequel tie-in release.

Nothing "official" but it's been heavily suggested by J.J. Abrams and various other producers.
