I saw this movie over the weekend and really liked it. There are parts where you do get a little disoriented but luckily they have lull periods. Overall I'd give the pic quality a 4 and the sound a 5. The beginning almost broke my subwoofer.

My copy of Cloverfield shipped from Amazon yesterday even though I had an estimate delivery date of July 9th. I should get it by tomorrow. Hope that helps everyone that ordered from Amazon.

Well, 2 days after receiving that notice from Amazon that they didn't know when they'd have it back in stock they shipped it.

Looks like I'll have it early next week (or Saturday).

Recently bought the BR for this and just watched it over the weekend. Really enjoyed the movie and was very satisfied with the quality of the presentation except for a couple of issues. So I wanted to check if anyone else has experienced this problem.

All was well with the disc until the point where they had entered the subway and the guy gets the cell phone call from his mom and walks away to talk to her. As soon as he walked away, I could no longer hear anything he was saying. I thought that maybe this was an artistic statement or something, especially since the volume was fine seconds earlier, but my friend had seen the movie before and said that I was missing something. I turned on the subtitles and got information like that. The weird thing was that during the phone conversation I could hear ambient noises but could barely even make out the conversation. Well, I could make it out enough to hear mumbled talking, not really make out any words. It continued for a little bit like that after the conversation and then just started working again. But I noticed a couple of other, briefer instances where the dialogue volume went way below what it should have been. Anyone else have similar problems? Is mine a defective disc? What are my recourses?

Is it repeatable? If you were to turn off all your equipment, turn it back on, then go to that same spot again, would the same thing happen?

I haven't watched it on Blu-Ray yet, but I did see it in theatres four or five times, and a couple more on DVD. I may be mistaken, but it seems like that scene is just tricky to hear. Keeping in mind the handheld cam idea, as he walks away his voice wouldn't be picked up by the mic in the camera as much and would sound quieter even while the ambient noise continues at the same level.

Also, are you going to a receiver with surround or just using sound from your display?

I used to have a lot of problems hearing certain dialog back years ago when I used 5.1 tracks through the speakers of my TV.

I'm going through a receiver. I've got five speakers and a subwoofer. Nothing is coming from the TV speakers.

My friend has the DVD and has watched it before and he said he had no problem making out what he was saying. And the problem continued with the first couple of lines spoken after that phone conversation.

I understand the nature of how this was filmed; that's why the audio drop-off didn't really alarm me, but my friend who had seen it several times before told me what was in the conversation. Trust me, he couldn't have known what was said if the DVD sounded like my Blu-ray. Muffled voices are one thing, but this was completely inaudible. I had to put my ear right next to the speaker just to hear anything coming out, but I still couldn't really make out any words. And if it wasn't made to be heard by human ears, why include subtitles anyway?

When it happened, I fast-forwarded it and it still did the same thing. I also tried to increase the volume on my center channel but I couldn't get it loud enough to hear what he was saying. I haven't tried again since powering down my PS3. I guess I'll try that when I get home from work. I can't recall the other small times that it happened, but it was in this scene where it was by far the worst and lasted the longest.

This has never happened to me before while watching a DVD or Blu-ray. In fact, I have since been watching Mad Men on Blu-ray and the audio is perfect. That's why I thought maybe there was something wrong with my copy. I'll check again when I get home.
