What is wrong with enjoying what is available now, and waiting to enjoy what will be available later when it is available?
This is not now, and never ever has been an all or nothing proposition, though for some it always has been.
Movies on plastic discs are not investments. They are entertainment. In 99.99% of the time, the price you pay now will be far bigger than if you wait.
If you are giving advice to maximize his "investment" then he should wait till whatever takes over for BD becomes the dominant format and buy up BD for pennies on the dollar.
That is exactly what he's doing with HD DVD.

I never had a stance one way or the other in the "war" - had blu ray lost, i'd be doing the same thing with them. from what i can tell having seen other blu ray players though, i do think my a30 upconverts SD much better than blu ray - which was one thing i read all along.

I'll have to disagree. I find the upconversion of my A3 softer than the upconversion on my BD30. I prefer the Blu Ray machine to watch SD DVDs.
