What is wrong with enjoying what is available now, and waiting to enjoy what will be available later when it is available?

This is not now, and never ever has been an all or nothing proposition, though for some it always has been.

Movies on plastic discs are not investments. They are entertainment. In 99.99% of the time, the price you pay now will be far bigger than if you wait.

If you are giving advice to maximize his "investment" then he should wait till whatever takes over for BD becomes the dominant format and buy up BD for pennies on the dollar.

That is exactly what he's doing with HD DVD.

Chances are if I waited for a winner, I would've missed out on a lot of great import HD-DVDs.

exactly...i've managed to amass those titles and a player for less than a blu ray player would cost without any moives...and then the movies themselves are far more expensive. so, i don't foresee being able to afford blu ray for at least a year, probably two, but i can enjoy what i have on HD now. it was really an easy choice for me.

I never had a stance one way or the other in the "war" - had blu ray lost, i'd be doing the same thing with them. from what i can tell having seen other blu ray players though, i do think my a30 upconverts SD much better than blu ray - which was one thing i read all along.

without going too much off tangent, I've read that too ... why is it that HD-DVD's do upconvert better than bluray?

Could have been the model of HD-DVD player I was looking at, but the upconvert I saw was vastly inferior to the upconvert my PS3 does....

(I love how Giles is somewhat hijacking his own thread.)

I find this statement rather odd in that you don't even have a BD player to begin with so how can you make an assumption like that?

Don't take this as a knock, by the way (inserted for politeness considering the history of this forum).

I'll have to disagree. I find the upconversion of my A3 softer than the upconversion on my BD30. I prefer the Blu Ray machine to watch SD DVDs.
