soooo.... what are Universal, Paramount/Dreamworks actually waiting for???

what's the hold up? Why haven't either of these studios made an annoucement of specific titles to be released on blu-ray at this point? The wait is killing me.

Adam Tyner 04-10-08 10:16 AM

The last thread along these lines was closed, and the same might hold true here.

I understand your frustration, but no one here is going to know the answer until it's made publicly available, and when that happens, I'm sure someone'll start a new thread. :)

Mr. Cinema 04-10-08 10:22 AM

Here's my thoughts, which were posted in the closed thread Adam mentioned.

The generic timeline I've been seeing is May/June for when we'll see Uni/Par titles on shelves. I believe titles are certainly in production. Paramount has pissed off lots of people, so I'm assuming they will wait until they are sure they'll have x amount of titles ready before they announce. I seriously doubt they want to pull a Fox and tell us 20 titles are coming in the next 2 months only to delay them.

Universal has never, ever, produced in BD, so it should not be surprising that they are quiet. Toshiba only pulled the plug 2 months ago, so maybe both companies are quiet as a courtesy.

pinata242 04-10-08 10:23 AM

Recovery from grief and depression is sometimes a lengthy road. They'll catch up eventually, they'll have to.

Too bad they didn't get the lead out, I would have gladly repurchased all of BSG in HD, but now that I have the 3rd season, I'll probably just finish it as DVD and leave it.

Vendetta-AKK 04-10-08 10:36 AM

I'm sure this is true about most of us complaining on here. What bothers me most about the wait is that I really want to buy recently releases like Atonement, There Will Be Blood, Etc..., and upcoming releases like Cloverfield, but I don't feel like buying any more standard DVDs, unless I absolutely have to.

It would be nice to know one way or the other. I would buy these on SD if I knew they would never be released on Blu, but until I get some info one way or the other I feel like waiting it out. But, it was awfully hard this week to walk by There Will Be Blood, such a fantastic film.

Yavin 04-10-08 10:40 AM

Does anyone know if the HD DVDs of There Will Be Blood and Sweeney Todd actually got released in the overseas markets? I'm looking at the HMV Hong Kong site, and it lists those two HD DVDs (as well as Bee Movie) and also says that they can ship within 10-28 days ...

(Didn't mean to restart the issue again, just wondering since I see them listed there ... Sorry)

Gizmo 04-10-08 10:44 AM

Sigh. Again?

Opinions? We just had the same thread 2 days ago. If anything changed and either studio announced movies it would be known.

Sweeney Todd currently has a May release date on BD in the UK via WB.

Not sure what that means, if anything, for a domestic Paramount BD.

Deftones 04-10-08 11:13 AM

I think they are waiting for more threads like this to be started.

candyrocket786 04-10-08 11:55 AM

I would've figured this discussion would be part of the Wishlist thread.

If not... then :D

I'd like to see Uni give us a new version of Serenity complete with PCM/DTS MA and additional extras.

It would be only fitting since it was their first HD-DVD title.

Well it ain't like there are a plethora of other things to post about around here! I mean that PS3 and DTS HD thread is the only new thread that has been remotely "hot" in a few weeks IMHO.

that's what really bugs me, is that my fingers are itchin' to buy the import, but at nearly fourty bucks ... I just have to bite my lower lip and wait for the eventual US bluray annoucement, for Paramount/Dreamworks to say nothing, is as just as annoying as the actual wait is to hear some official news.

kiett_2000 04-10-08 12:27 PM

They want their 50 bucks back from Toshiba!!!!

Actually, an opinion would be nice. You saw his responses in the other thread.

Back to the subject, Giles, I had the same question. Doing a random search, I didn't see any dialogue or news on this. Here or elsewhere. Just various reviews on Blu-Rays. And wish lists.

The way I look at it, any domestic BD from Paramount will almost certainly list for $40, and go for around $27-$30 unless you like shopping at Best Buy. :)

So for a movie I really enjoyed, and being a big Tim Burton fan, I'm OK with $10 to get it sooner. Of course I am the king of rationalization when it comes to my collection. :D

Its not quite Serenity, but we may get FIREFLY on Blu-Ray soon:

Ooh. All you browncoats, format hounds and Firefly fans out there, word has gotten out that Fox Entertainment is in the planning stages to release a Blu-ray box set of the still popular television series from Joss Whedon. Jewel “Kaylee” Staite was at the Supernova Convention in Melbourne last week when she dropped this bit of juicy news…

“I just heard that they’re re-releasing Firefly, a special edition of Firefly in a box set. They actually asked me if I was able to come down to L.A. and do a commentary in the Spring at some point. So I think that would be fun.”

Since this was picked up by TVShowsOnDVD yesterday they have confirmed with Fox that indeed they are planning to release Firefly in the Blu-ray format. This marks the first time that the series will be available to us in an HD format. Serenity was released on the now spurned HD DVD format.

There's no way we'll get releases in May or June. Universal and Paramount may try hard to get stuff out for Christmas. But that's my theory and I'm sticking to it.

Because studios are more confused than forum members.

The Bus 04-10-08 09:15 PM

I doubt we'll see any big releases until August or so. For all we know they're waiting for MGS to hit and the PS3 to sell more.

Gizmo 04-10-08 09:23 PM

May or June? No way. Retail stores need to be kept aware of future titles and the pre-orders from May is already done, as is most of June. If anything I expect something in the summer. Paramount sure has hell better come out with Cloverfield, Sweeny Todd and There Will Be Blood right away.

I've given up on Paramount. I'm importing Sweeney Todd and There Will Be Blood.

DVDGamer 04-11-08 12:49 AM

I think its more than just wanting to release blue rays now. You need a different production plant to produce blue rays, And its a more expensive process too. So I'm sure they're still reworking their investment priorities. It will come soon enough. Unfortunately, expensive too without competition from HD DVD.

jiggawhat 04-11-08 01:19 AM

No contingency plans. Both Paramount and Uni didn't have one. They didn't expect Toshiba to throw in the towel so soon. They both fully expected this to be a long protracted war which didn't turn out like expected. This is why Grafeo was let go because he didn't have a plan in case something like that did happen. Plus Uni didn't have the right people to help oversee the production of BD so hence it's going to take them a little longer to get discs out.

Compounding the problem is disc production. Currently, there is a shortage of discs because BD demand jumped about 5 times in a span of one month. Because the initial BD supporting studios get the first crack at discs, Para and Uni have to wait for production to ramp up. BD didn't have the capacity at the time and they currently still are cranking out lines like nobody's business. As I said before, expect releases soon but not as far out as people think as long as certain things happen.
