On mine, I just used the Stop button, and it worked fine. I didn't try ejecting a disc while still playing, but it wouldn't surprise me to know that that action would not activate the resume logic in the player.

What I observed is that if you press stop on the remote, the PS3 will resume play at the stopped point, even if the disc is removed and reinserted, as long as the player is still on. If you turn the player off after stopping, and the disc is still inserted, then the next time you turn it on it will still resume. But, if you remove the disc before turning off the player, and then insert the same disc after turning the unit back on, it will not resume, but start at the beginning.

I have already resumed three discs with the PS3 remote after simply pushing the stop button. The titles are Pan's Labyrinth (DVD), Ghost Rider (BD), and Donnie Brasco (BD) if it matters. There should be no reason to hit O, and I've never done so...

Why would Enchanted not work for me after pushing stop? Perhaps I accidentally pushed stop twice and that clears the memory?

From the PS3 update details:

Resuming play of DVDs

You can now resume playing a DVD from the point where you previously stopped it, even if you turn off your PS3™ system or eject the disc. Your system saves a record of the scene that was playing when you stopped playback so it knows where to resume playing.

Note
You can also use the resume play feature on some Blu-ray Discs. You cannot use resume play on Blu-ray Discs that support BD-J (Blu-ray Disc Java).

This is definitely not what I found on "I Am Legend" last night, unless that is a BD-J -- but I'm still not clear what constitutes a BD-J BD. I was able to stop and resume (it was not quick), but not able to resume when I ejected and re-inserted (and I didn't power off).

Don't get me wrong: I love BDs, but I must say that I don't find the PS3 as easy to use as my A2.

I haven't received my "I Am Legend" disc yet, but my guess is that it is a BD-J title, and it probably implements it's own resume feature. However, you do raise one good point. Most of my tests were done using an SD DVD. I didn't try every scenario using a Blu-ray Disc. Those tests I did try seemed to behave the same (at least for a non-BD-J disc), but maybe there are differences in the way the feature works on some discs. I don't know.

As far as which player is "easier to use", I suppose it's all a matter of perspective, but NONE of the HD DVD players I own -- an A1, an A3, and an Xbox 360 add-on drive -- are even remotely as easy to use as my PS3. It beats them all by a country mile in that department.

When discussing ease of use, I'm confused on what everyone means. What's the difference between operating a Blu-ray, HD-DVD, or DVD player? I mean, you put the disc in, and press buttons on the remote, and the disc should respond accordingly. Admittedly I've never operated an HD-DVD player, but am I missing something?

I guess by "ease of use," I mean there isn't all this menu stuff (games, downloads, music, etc.) and circles, triangles, etc. on my A2, compared to my PS3. Granted, I use the PS3 for movie purposes only, so I'm not as adept as a gamer might be. Nevertheless, I don't want to turn this into a "better player" thread because I really do love my BDs, and PS3 for that matter -- I was just making an observation.

I've noticed one problem with the resume. When I tested it with my Walt Disney Treasures: Disney Rarities, it did resume the disc (skipped all the opening stuff). But rather than dropping me back to the menu I was previously on, it selected the Play All option and started playing the disc. While it's a minor annoyance, it would be nice if it would drop you back to the menu if that's where you previously were. That would also be a nice feature for TV on DVD.

ID4 is a BD-J disc which, as noted numerous times, doesn't work with the resume functionality.

Netflix does NOT work. Gives you an error. They require MS Windows and MS Media Player. Damn I HATE hooking up my HDTV as a second monitor on my laptop to watch this stuff! That's what I get for being on the bleeding edge, I guess.

These firmware updates are slowly making my Oppo obsolete: First upconversion, then avi files, now resume option.

Now all I need is the ability to play Region 2 PAL movies and I can take one item out of my set-up.

Why are you nervous about doing an update? Just curious.

Yeah, the first update I did when I first got the system went fine. Thanks for all the reassurance!

That would be fantastic.

I'm digging the new resume playback update.

If that is sarcasm, weren't you the one who tried to do the update without the controller charged/connected?

Hmm, no, wasn't being sarcastic. And, no, I wasn't the one that tried to do the update without the controller charged/connected.

I wish Sony would just do an update to make the PS3 region free. Have some R2 dvds that wont work on my PS3. I know this will never happen but one can wish.

I wish Sony would add that internet radio feature that the PSP has. I think that it is a cool feature and something they could easily implement to the PS3.

This feature would be great and might help to get a few sales from those that are undecided on whether to buy a PS3 or not.
