They'd put them back on the shelf hours later, I guess. So, make sure you talk to someone before buying before the sale.

I am in no way questioning what you were told, but I was given a different answer. The rep (who actually seemed quite knowledgable about the state of HD media, which frankly surprised me a little) saw me looking at the HD-DVDs and gave me a "heads up" that they would be 50% off next week. I asked what would happen if I bought them this week, and his answer was to bring them back unopened for a return and rebuy. Unfortunately, the selection (and prices) sucked (Nashua, NH) and I left empty handed.

Not all titles were on sale though. And everything has been cleared out after the first day already (not helped by the fact that the average Wal-Mart carries a paltry HD DVD selection to begin with).

I left work half an hour earlier and managed to snag the only copy at the store I passed by on my way home :)

Thanks for the tip. I have 4 or 5 Walmarts in my general area that carry (or carried) HD DVDs, so I'll check them out tomorrow to see if any are left (I hope so!)

I took a look at my local WM this evening and all the BD and HD DVD discs were still priced at retail.

larry47591 03-27-08 07:48 PM

Has anyone gotten there mediadis.com order? Mine shipped last monday but still no package in the mail. Thanks

DVD Polizei 03-27-08 08:05 PM

Still waiting for mine. Shipped on the 17th. I'd expect around 2 weeks.

Moopher 03-27-08 08:28 PM

I caved and got Into the Wild and Black Snake Moan for $21 shipped.

I'm going to return it i guess...that's not too difficult with them is it? I can get it from Eazydvd with Out of sight for $23 shipped!

Both of my closest HVs had stacks of Into the Wild brand new (wrapped) for $14.99 or 2/$20. It's probably worth your time to check or call.

DVD Polizei 03-27-08 08:56 PM

I thought shipping was rather expensive from this place. 5 HD DVDs would be $25AUS just for shipping.

Their first sale I ordered the first 3 Rambos and Leaving Las Vegas.
Had I realized how expensive shipping would be, I wouldn't have bothered.
Lucky for them I was in a hurry and didn't have time to research before ordering.

HistoryProf 03-28-08 12:21 AM

Wow...just got a shipping notice from Eazydvd! I placed two separate orders for 2 discs in each order, and they combined them together and only charged my $17.50au for shipping! So I ended up with

Into the Wild
Hot Fuzz
Out of Sight
Black Snake Moan for $50 total w/ shipping. That's freaking awesome.

perhaps if there was a hollywood video within 200 miles of me that had any HD DVDs it might.

and i'm assuming you mean 2/$20?

I just got it for about that anyway.

That was really cool of him. The guys I talked to pretended not to know about the sale until I told them I already saw the ad. Even then they were like, "If there WAS a 50% off sale, we wouldn't be able to match, blah, blah, blah."

Moopher 03-28-08 02:33 AM

Cool, my order from Ezydvd already shipped!

steelpotato 03-28-08 04:16 AM

Australian Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a combo. Bizarrely, it has region 1 labelled on the standard dvd side. I have yet to test the standard side out though.

xfilekr 03-28-08 07:13 AM

My ezydvd order shipped too

Josh Z 03-28-08 10:26 AM

For those who ordered from EzyDVD, be warned that they ship by slooooow boat. It'll probably be a couple weeks before you receive anything.

Somebody over on CAG posted that an employee at Best Buy told them that all the shipped back HD DVDs are going to be available over the website at 70% off, starting Sunday. Could be total bs, but figured it was worth mentioning here.

Interesting.

I need about 20 more titles.

bretski 03-28-08 10:52 AM

That'd be great, if true. Doesn't really make much sense, though. I mean, why spend the money on labor and shipping to send all the discs back to the mothership, then turn around and sell them at a greater loss?

matome 03-28-08 10:52 AM

One of my local Best Buys completely removed the HD DVD section and replaced them with TV on DVD sets. Oddly enough the other one removed about 95% of the HD DVD's but had left about 25 assorted HD DVD's on a lonesome shelf, though mostly of the Harry Potter variants and a single Star Trek set. No 30% off notices anywhere.

Yeah, I don't really see the sense in it either. Then again, it's Best Buy, so who says they have to make sense.

Clearing that shelf space is much more valuable to them than any potential sales they might have made in-store. If they're going to do a clearance sale, it's more efficient for them to do it from a central warehouse location.

"CAG"? For the uninitiated, what site is this?

matome 03-28-08 12:51 PM

CAG = http://www.cheapassgamer.com/ bargain site

Hollywood Video in Madison AL has about 6 of those, and a handful of other HD-DVDs. Movie Gallery in Madison AL has a couple of Into the Wild, and about 15 other HD-DVD titles including Mummy I and II.

Moviestop in Huntsville AL has gone from 3 racks' worth of HD-DVDs to 1 rack in a couple of weeks' time. I don't know if somebody bought a crapload, of if they shipped them back. Maybe a bit of both - I was going to buy Evan Almighty used, and last time I was there they had a couple and they are now gone....

No sign of any impending clearance sale.

David
