The Shawshank Redemption (Blu-ray) --> November 4th!

It's eight months away, but who cares? Shawshank is making its far anticipated arrival on Blu this November, according to High-Def Digest.

In a very early announcement, Warner has set a November Blu-ray debut for 'The Shawshank Redemption.'

One of the most eagerly awaited Blu-ray titles in Warner's catalog, 'The Shawshank Redemption' was first touted for next-gen release last year in a variety of press materials and advertisements, though no hard street date was ever set.

The wait is now over, with Warner scheduling the Frank Darabont-directed classic for a November 4 Blu-ray debut.

With the release date so far off, there were no tech specs or supplement details available at press time, but we expect more to be revealed over the coming months.

Warner has set a suggested $28.98 list price for the Blu-ray.
Looks like I've already got a big fourth-quarter purchase pegged.

Hopefully this means it'll be a nice 2-disc edition.

That either mean a bare bones release, a misprint, or that MSRPs are coming down.

Aside from Fox, most HD catalog titles are listed around $29.99.

namja 02-25-08 03:28 PM

I only have ~25 must-own movies and this is one of them. Awesome.

mike2 02-25-08 03:29 PM

Well it's a little ways off but it will definitely be in my blu-ray collection.

Michael Corvin 02-25-08 03:30 PM

Can't wait. Already sold my SE DVD for a fair amount of change in anticipation.

Gizmo 02-25-08 03:40 PM

Funny as this title was never advertised on Blu-ray that I can recall. It was always advertised on HD DVD with many of Warner's early releases with brochures as "coming soon". Nice to finally see it though.

nevertheless, we can at least assume that it's probably not a packed special edition like Bonnie and Clyde for instance, which has a $34.99 MSRP.

YES!

YES!

OH YES!

My favorite film of all time in Blu. Thank you WB!

king3style 02-25-08 04:47 PM

You must not be buying much HDM from Warner. This is pretty standard pricing for them. If it were Fox, I'd be suspicious at how low the price is.

I would imagine it simply means it's a direct port of the supplements from the 10th anniversary edition, which was excellent and pretty "packed" as far as I'm concerned. This MSRP is on par with their HD-DVD releases of Casablanca and Robin Hood and their dual-format releases of The Searchers, to name a few. All of these carried over the 2-disc SE features and all are wonderful. I expect the extra time and planning has gone not into special features but into pefecting the technical aspects of the disc. If that's the case, I can live with that!

Can't Wait. This should look great in HD.

hey, i'm not complaining. maybe my wording was off, but i simply meant that we're probably not getting a "new" special edition with extras beyond what is on the dvd, as some may be hoping. nothing wrong with that at all, though i would like to see the studios eventually do more next-gen extras (ie., IME) on pre-2000 classic titles.

PopcornTreeCt 02-25-08 08:17 PM

Wow, way too far away. Is this a sign that 2008 is gonna be a terrible year for catalog titles? I think so.

I'm not worried yet. Though April looks pretty meager so far and it's just around the corner. I have only three titles I want in April so far, all new releases (Golden Compass, Walk Hard, Juno). Commando (for the cheese factor) is the only catalog title that's tempting. Paramount and Universal need to swoop in and salvage that month for us Blu-ray owners. :) I'd buy Sweeney Todd, Charlie Wilson's War, Atonement, and There Will Be Blood on Blu-ray.

jiggawhat 02-25-08 11:06 PM

Finally, I was waiting for this for to be released after they teased it in those inserts.

The HD DVD version was announced when the format surfaced...so its long overdue. Hopefully we see the Blu-ray version with better features then the current DVD.

Thats it. Thats the one that lost the war for HD DVD. ;)

I will buy this. Not as big a fan as most seem to be, but I like the film.

DVD Polizei 02-25-08 11:39 PM

Well, it's about the same time I'll be buying a Blu-ray player, so I can wait.

This would definitely be a God send. I remember reading somewhere that Darabont is "embarrassed" of the deleted scenes and doesn't want them shown publicly. I can't imagine that it'd be worse (or more embarrassing) than all the other crap deleted scenes that make it on every other DVD release out there. If anything, Shawshank wasn't long enough!

eedoon 02-26-08 05:57 AM

Good thing I didn't upgrade my original release with the SE.
