I think the delay on this & others is a sign that they will be giving us BD encodes and not previously prepared HD DVD ports.

...if a HD DVD encoded was actually prepared. With Shawshank never officially having a date before, it could have just been used as release fluff. I can't even recall us ever getting any more information then the little picture inside on the pamphlet.

It was in his commentary. I just listened to it yesterday and he said that people ask him about deleted scenes and that they were deleted for a reason and he was NOT going to put them on the DVD.

Can someone give me some more info on this deleted scene special? First I've heard of it.

Same here. I can see his stance though. The film is revered and why take a chance at tainting the film just to throw some half-baked extras on a dvd release?

as for the deleted scenes, they were culled together and aired on Showtime in 1995. It sounds from what I've seen on the internet, is that's only two scenes, but I thought there were additional ones, since the cable show was under thirty minutes in length

Deleted scenes are usually not worth it. If they have a director's commentary over them, it does make it much more worthwhile as an extra to a DVD.

However, Shawshank is probably my favorite movie of all time, so I'll take any tidbit pertaining to this movie that is available.

I was absolutely thrilled when i saw the release date. Full BD encode and not recycled encode with hd dvd specs. Delicious. Cannot wait.

i'm confused by the "BD encode" comments. did warner ever do an HD DVD encode? if so, why wasn't it announced for release on HD DVD at some point? or was it, and i just missed it (very possible)? and why does that particular release date ensure a "BD encode" if a hi-def encode of some kind does already exist? aren't there any number of factors that can contribute to a release date?

i want the best possible presentation as much as anyone else, but i don't think the fact that it comes out in November necessarily guarantees that.

I don't have The Shawshank Redemption on DVD yet, so it looks like I'll just wait until November and buy it on Blu-ray.

No guarantee at all, just a hunch and a hope. I do guarantee that there will be many unhappy campers if they half-ass this release.

ha! agreed. personally, i do expect them to give great care to this transfer, no matter when they release it.

aside from some early slip ups (like my jaggy Enter the Dragon BD), warner has seemed fairly dedicated to providing solid transfers on classic catalog titles (2001, Blade Runner, etc).

Let's hope they include this.

IMO Warner still has a lot to prove. Their transfers-to-date are good by 2006 standards, but now it's 2008, and they have yet to match the best that Fox, Sony, and (especially) Disney have been giving us. Just look at last week for an example: Dolby Digital the best on Michael Clayton, WTF?

What does the soundtrack have to do with the transfer?

I thought transfer referred to primarily picture but also sound... I'm not overly impressed with either when it comes to Warner.

Well, Warner has been saddled with maximum 30 GB transfers, while the best of Fox, Sony and Disney have not. Now that they've shed HD-DVD, we'll see if there is an improvement.

This has long been one of my favorite movies. I will double dip on this one.

I like the look of the packaging. It seems fitting to me.

I will definitely be purchasing this one... I never even got around to getting it on DVD and this is one of my favorite films!

I too am not a fan of the Digi-Book packaging, but they could package this in a brown paper bag or a cardboard sleeve and I'd still pick it up on release day.

They should have housed it in a make-shift bible and include a little pick axe.
