With no numbers to go with it, it isn't that big of a surprise and those listings mean nothing. For every 100 copies Good Luck Chuck sold, Yuma sold 98. Yuma was in it's second week, right?

To me those listings say the overall amount of discs sold last week was probably pretty if GLC was #1. After 1/8, Life Of Brian is the only HDM disc I'm buying this month. Slim pickings.

It just occurred to me - all those who want Blu-Ray players but don't want to pay more than $200 for them, use your forthcoming tax rebate check (not your regular tax refund) to buy one!

Many people will see $600 at least. 40GB PS3 with a bunch of movies. U.S.A.! U.S.A.!

Marvelled at the SD version and realized it must be my first Blu-ray purchase (well full price anyway at Amazon - I bought 2001, Casino Royal and Dreamgirls with a $20 off 3 BB coupon).

Did the SI numbers move up again in BD's favor?

Since Inception is now 64%. I read that it has moved up 1 point each of the last 2 weeks.

Yep. I don't believe there were any massive media sales last week, so increasing a point is pretty good, especially with the HD DVD players extremely low price points.

NPD: Free Blu-ray player deals led to boosted sales this month

By Nate Mook, BetaNews
January 24, 2008, 2:46 PM
A report from NPD Group claimed Blu-ray standalone player sales accounted for 93 percent of the high-def market for the week ending January 12, but NPD itself won't stand behind the numbers, saying they were leaked and that weekly sales data is not a long-term indicator.

According to Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis for NPD, the data "came from an NPD subscriber" and "wasn't approved for release from NPD." He added that the firm typically sees big fluctuations in sales volumes each week, and never makes long-term judgements based on weekly data.

"It reflects what was going on during that week," Baker said, adding that it wasn't smart to "extrapolate that out for six months."

So what went on the week ending January 12 that led to such high numbers in Blu-ray standalone player sales? Bundling deals with HDTVs, explained Baker. Sharp Blu-ray players accounted for over 30% of sales, as they were offered free to buyers of the company's LCD televisions.

Sony -- also accounting for one-third of sales -- had a similar $400-off deal for Blu-ray players when buying a Sony HDTV.

Panasonic, like Sharp, offered a free Blu-ray player and made up for the remaining third of units sold. Samsung Blu-ray sales were almost non-existent, as the company did not offer any special deals to TV buyers.

The NPD figures did not include Sony's PlayStation 3 or Microsoft's HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360 -- only standalone players.

Baker wouldn't get specific -- since NPD normally never even comments on weekly sales data -- but said there was some drop in HD DVD player sales. For its part, the HD DVD Promotional Group told BetaNews the weekly sales data was from before the HD DVD player price drop Toshiba announced last week.

Baker did provide BetaNews some insight as to how NPD counts sales. It receives its data from point-of-sale systems from a number of retail outlets across the United States. He would not say how many retailers send data to NPD, but said it was "double digits."

NPD's numbers do not include online sales from the likes of Amazon, where Toshiba's HD-A3 HD DVD player is the number one seller in the DVD player category and number 14 in all of electronics. By contrast, standalone Blu-ray players do not make the electronics list.
Discuss.

Thats some funny shit! More dirty tricks! Seems like all of the "sold" Blu Ray standalones were given away for free.

BTW: YOu must read The Digital Bits response to this:
http://thedigitalbits.com/#mytwocents

"WHAT US, I DIDN"T DO THAT! WE JUST POSTED THE NUMBERS .. WE NEVER SAID THEY MEANT ANYTHING!! HONESTLY!!!"

What a load of shit! Then he has a straight face to tell us that that some guy went over to Hollywood in High Def, and he fails to tell us that he has contributed to that site for a long time!

Blu Ray may "win," thats great, I don't give a shit beyond wanting low priced players. But the damage people are doing to their credibility and the future of high def media is astounding.

Still... That move put more Blu-ray players in the market. It's not like that's not the whole goal of this business... Oh wait, isn't that Toshiba's motivation behind HD DVD player price cuts?

Yeah sure it gets players out there. No doubt.

But saying they were "sold" when in fact they were free is/was misleading.

I couldn't even get past the first paragraph. He's just whining to much about how awesome Blu-ray is and how much of a great website he has. Did he mention that HD DVD has had literally 0 releases for the past few weeks? Does he even mention he writes for the BDA propaganda website?

According to the NPD figures, 90% of Blu-ray players "sold" were actually given away free with TV purchased. Only 10% actually PURCHASED a Blu-ray player. Yikes.

The betanews article has already been completely discredited. Comments were attributed to NPD that were never said, and the entire article was spun to present the most favorable impression for HD DVD.

For the actual story, read it at twice.com:

http://www.twice.com/article/ca6524995.html

The facts are that the sales numbers were affected by the giveaway offers, but to what extent is not known, and it was never claimed by NPD that there were virtually no Blu-ray players sold during that time frame, as betanews ridiculously claimed.

I have to agree here. The goal is to move players.

It is things like this that make me roll my eyes when people want to talk about sales figures. It is all spin.

The article you linked to says almost exactly what the text quoted above says.

Sony, Sharp and Panasonic all had promotions for players that week. Lots of people are buying an HDTV because of the Superbowl, and I am sure that some made a selection of TV knowing they'd get a BD player and I am sure some don't even care, but it was free.

These three manufacturers, even in the article you cited, took the top three spots for sales.

Even when they are instantly rebated, the players are still sold through the retail system. These are not packed in the box of the TV.

This BS has been going on since the formats launched. Counting titles packed in boxes, counting B1G1 free titles as two sales etc.

That is why these numbers are a pile of bullshit.

Why the anger in this thread? Geez, I read the same whiny posts everytime numbers get posted. Why get emotionally involved? "Mommy, mommy, the BDA moved alot more players last week than HD DVD and it's not fair!"

Who gives a shit how the players are getting into homes? Isn't that the goal? Grow the user base?

Right now, both sides just happen to be doing it differently. The BDA is giving you a free player if you buy a $1500 HDTV, in addition to selling them. Toshiba is almost giving them away by slashing prices left and right.

I get so sick of reading the same complaining posts.

I'd call it smart/aggressive marketing on the part of the BDA to bundle players with tvs.

I agree here. I think the bundling is a smart thing to do.
