I would pick up The Goonies immediately, but I'm really hoping for Heat and/or Beetlejuice.

GreenMonkey 02-05-08 09:47 AM

I'd love to see some hi-def anime releases, but I doubt I would be able to buy them. It'd be back to the days of $25 anime 3 or 4-episode DVDs...except probably more like $40 or $50 MSRP. Ick.

Warner, not a secondary distrib, is bringing it out on BR and HDDVD on March 1.

I will be shocked if this title did not come to the US. (Look for the German list in the Foreign Cinema thread as all of the dates in there are "pre-orders"). Actually if you need to have a more precise guess what Warner might be publishing in the US look at the French WB list by RAMA in the same thread as the majority of the German WB titles appear to be overlapping.

Thanks for the heads up pro-b!

The Digital Bits will be offering up more on Warners BD plans, but here is some news.

Batman Begins: Limited Collector's Edition Gift Set on BD for Q3.

Batman Anthology on BD for Q3.

The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, Woodstock, and North by Northwest will all be released on BD in 2009 with new HD restorations.

....2009? A year away?

Adam Tyner 02-06-08 09:48 AM

Sure.

40th anniversary of the Woodstock concert.
50th anniversary of North by Northwest.
70th anniversary of Gone with the Wind.
70th anniversary of The Wizard of Oz.

Considering how good OZ and GWTW looked on remastered DVD, we might be in for a real treat on BD.

Wow! Everyone of those titles are day one purchases. I wonder what's going to be included in the Batman Begins CE gift set?

Looking forward to this. But not looking forward to the price for the Anthology boxset. I might just get the Batman Begins giftset. I hope they're really making it worthy of the "Limited Collector's Edition Gift Set" moniker.

kefrank 02-06-08 10:15 AM

i hope they'll also be releasing the 90s batman films separately. there's no way i'm buying a box set that includes Batman & Robin and Batman Forever. (well, if that's my only choice, i might buy the set and try to sell those).

i'm also curious to see if the Batman Begins BD will have any new features not present on the current HD DVD. here's to hoping.

the mention of North by Northwest is super exciting. that ought to be spectacular on BD. let's hope this is the first among many Hitchcock releases in hi-def.

Doughboy 02-06-08 10:17 AM

Hopefully the Batman Anthology is as badass as the Superman Ultimate Collection. Of course, I wonder if I should even bother since Batman Begins and hopefully The Dark Knight would be the only truly exceptional Batflicks in the set.

Gizmo 02-06-08 10:24 AM

So far only Oz and Dark Knight for me. I didn't like the original Batman flicks. Even Warners theatrical titles this year don't interest me that much (The Dark Knight, Speed Racer, Get Smart, Where the Wild Things Are, 10,000 B.C. and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Price).

I just want Gremlins :(

Edit: Thats not the entire list for 2008, right? I read it on TDB (ick), but I would think there would be more titles...right? I noticed a new HD DVD release too, Dirty Harry Boxset. I really hope that is not it. I really want some decent catalog titles.

Mr. Cinema 02-06-08 10:35 AM

Yes, they will have more details on the Warner BD catalogs later today.

While I agree, let's hope we get some high-def Hitchcock before 2009. :)

Frozenhamster 02-06-08 11:48 AM

Wow. The Warner announcements are extraordinary. Here's my Blu-ray list

Bonnie and Clyde
Once Upon a Time in America
True Romance
Dirty Harry (not sure about the full set, but the first film at least)
Batman Begins (Limited edition sounds interesting. Take that HD-DVD!)
The Dark Knight
Batman Anthology
Cool Hand Luke
You Must Remember This: The Warner Bros. Story (hopefully this is on Bluray also)
Wizard of Oz
Gone With the Wind
Woodstock
North by Northwest

2008 is shaping up to be an expensive year. There are still all the other studios releasing great discs. But I really do love these catalog releases. Sleeping Beauty will also be fantastic.

ha, yes! i should have worded it this way, "let's hope this is the first announcement among many for Hitchcock releases in hi-def."

The way I read that article, True Romance and OUATIA are just being re-promoted during the first quarter. I don't see any indication they will be released in HD unless I am missing something.

pro-bassoonist 02-06-08 01:36 PM

I am not interested in owning the Batman films but will be eagerly awaiting Gone with the Wind to be released.

Hopefully Bill posts the full, or a more complete, list of what is to come (and whatever it is he is allowed to post). I was expecting the Dirty Harry Series as they already have a German pre-order date but was also looking at LA Confidential. Most likely it will be added up later.

Doctor Zhivago would be a great addition if Warner gets around to it.

Supermallet 02-06-08 01:44 PM

I got an email from Warner with a ton of announcements, but unless I missed something, the only things they specifically pointed to as BD releases were the Batman Anthology and How The West Was Won.

Gizmo 02-06-08 01:53 PM

Batman Antholgy...is that all the Batman films or just the ones from the 90's?

According to that link, it has all the films except for The Dark Knight.

that's interesting. i'm a little surprised that Batman Begins would be included since it is the beginning of an entirely new franchise disassociated from the previous one. if they wanted to do an anthology of "all things batman" from WB, why not also include Mask of the Phantasm, at least? speaking of which, i'd love to see that cleaned up and released on BD (in a box-set or otherwise)!

NiCK Crush 02-06-08 06:04 PM

does anybody have any opinions/guesses on when Paramount will figure it all out and decide to go to Blu-Ray?

I didnt think this would bother me all that much, but with There Will Be Blood and Into The Wild being Paramount titles, i am really annoyed i will not be able to have these in high def right away

no one has a clue. i'd suggest you try asking the blu-ray insiders on blu-specific forums, but so far all they're saying is, "be patient." not what you want to hear, i'm sure, but worthwhile advice. in the meantime, there are plenty of great non-paramount titles available on blu-ray to tide you over.
