You can be supportive AND critical of something at the same time. People need to understand that.
Well some us on this board are trying to be supportive of this particular format while others are nothing but critical and very pessimistic. Spouting and ranting on every tangent possible in hopes that Blu-Ray will just wilt up and blow away is nothing other than annoying.

Let's go ahead and stop that line of arguing. No good is going to come of it.

The way I'd prefer to see this thread go is that users appreciate the format's strengths and acknowledge its weaknesses. Veering too far in either direction -- worshipping Blu-ray as some shining beacon of perfection or hissing backhanded compliments between clenched teeth -- really isn't of any value to anyone.

Mod Note: Anyone who gets into these thread derailing arguments are, in my opinion, a "guilty party." If people didn't bother to respond to the posts that they think are inflammatory, the people making those posts would realize that they aren't having an effect and will stop. When people make a big deal about a few posts, that's when the trouble starts. That doesn't mean it's a free for all to make obnoxious flamebait posts, but the effect of a small vocal minority (on both sides) would be lessened.

I thought this was amusing, thought I'd post it to interject some levity:

Sometimes there is a public pile on including mods who say they should be "called out". When it's others, ingore them.

Something here isn't adding up. JMHO.

Sonic HD authoring now BD exclusive

Sonic's Scenarist now Blu-ray, digital distribution format only
Posted Jan 30th 2008 1:17AM by Richard Lawler
Filed under: Blu-ray, HD DVD, Internet

Sonic Solutions has announced it will no longer sell the HD DVD version of its Scenarist professional authoring software, focusing instead on Blu-ray and digital distribution. Sonic -- provider of consumer authoring software under the Roxio brand (still w/ that sweet HD DVD flavor, at least for now) -- plans to expand its features to ease creation of BD Live features, and package high definition video for delivery on any of the many platforms popping up. It's not all bad for red fans, Sonic promises to continue customer support and product updates "where appropriate" for its HD DVD package, and a special promotion for users to switch to Blu-ray, although the terms aren't mentioned.

DVD Active posted revised cover art for Gattaca:
http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releases/gattaca.html

In my opinion, it is much better than the original cover art (which they still have up as well).

Better than the original SD cover or better than the first supposed SE cover?

Personally I still like the original SD cover the best.

I like the new Gattaca art - much better than the "green" one.

According to HD-Digest!

Warner's move to Blu-ray exclusivity has swayed yet another distribution partner to follow suit, with National Geographic confirming that it too will drop HD DVD support in favor of Blu-ray.

I hope that's a sign they plan to release more product. I liked Relentless Enemies.

Better than the horrific, green "Original Blu-ray Cover Art" also at the link that I posted.

Keep in mind in almost a 2 year span of HD DVD/Blu-ray NG has released only 1 movie, Relentless Enemies.

Well they have another one coming out in April called Sharkwater that is coming out on Blu-ray. Should be another excellent documentary.

But wouldn't you agree that this sort of flies in the face of the claim that all smaller content producers favor HD DVD because of its claimed lower production cost? I don't expect any NG titles to be huge sellers, so why would they choose Blu-ray if it is not as financially sound of a decision as choosing HD DVD would have been?

That actually sounds really cool. I used to love SHARK WEEK on the Discovery channel back in the day.

Not really since it was released by Warner Bros on behalf of National Geographic just like they do for HBO and the BBC.

On that note, bring on some more nature!

There was a news item a couple weeks back that stated BBC was still going to release on both formats, so it would appear the decision at least partially rests with the studio and not the overall distributor (WB).

And wouldn't that also imply that other smaller studios who want to release in high def might (or at least could) approach larger studios such as Warner for manufacturing and distribution?

I don't see why not.

Don't get me wrong, IMO any studio announcing exclusive support for BD at this point is a good thing for ending the war.

In the case of NG, I don't see how one can spin the news negatively. Sure they haven't released much, but the fact that they're stating their intentions is good, unlike some other studios *cough* Weinstein *cough*.

Yeah, that's the point I was trying to make, too. Every small studio that gets on board provides a) an example to other small studios that Blu-ray can be a lucrative format to release on (especially through partnerships with larger volume content producers), and b) more incentive for the big boys to consider switching.

Pointing out the lack of releases is simply a way to try and negate any positive momentum caused by the studio's decision to back Blu-Ray only.
