Mine as well though most people I know didn't like it. Maybe it was the comic book aspect, but I dug the movie.

In my mind, Unbreakable is the only movie of Shyamalan's that's actually worth watching more than once.

agreed on the detail and the color. what's odd is, if you look at the blade runner comparison on the same site, the detail issue is flip-flopped (the VC-1 from the HD DVD is much sharper than the broadcast MPEG2). perhaps it has more to do with the person doing the encoding than with the codec itself.

If you look at the comparison carefully the detail is slightly more washed out, but the quality of the encode is much higher. The broadcast version of 2001 is riddled with edge-enhancement and crap like that. The colours are also a bit off. I think it is also hard to judge these things simply by still images. I wouldn't be surprised if the picture on the HD-DVD or Bluray looks much better when in motion.

I. Hate. Fox.
HATE. HATE. HATE.

Following a earlier street date delay, the aliens of 'Independence Day' will finally invade Blu-ray this March.

As previously reported, Fox postponed the originally-planned December 4 Blu-ray release of mammoth blockbuster only days before it was due to hit stores, citing last-minute quality-control issues. Now the studio has confirmed a new date for the highly-anticipated release, which will hit Blu-ray at last on March 11, 2008.

Fox has also issued final specs for 'ID4,' which include 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video, a DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround track, plus Dolby Digital dubs and subtitle options in French and Spanish.

Fans hoping for a high-def replica of the same extensive extras found on the two-disc DVD version of the alien blockbuster will be disappointed, as the studio will be offering only a limited numbers of extras on the Blu-ray. Included on the set will be two audio commentaries with the filmmakers, plus a suite of four theatrical trailers. All of the previous edition's other video-based materials have not been ported over.

Exclusive to the Blu-ray, however, will be the "Alien Intercept" BD-Java interactive game, a subtitle fact track, personal scene selections, a content index, and D-Box enhancement.

Retail remains at the previously-announced $39.98.
I don't get it. Someone needs to explain this to me.
This is almost guaranteed to be a 50GB title.
How is it possible Fox releases a movie with only a few extras? Why not ALL of them? Hell, even if the extras are SD, they would only take up what, 2-6GB total, if they include all of them, if even that?

Instead, they give us two commentaries, some trailers, and a BD-Java game that is sure to crash all Blu-ray SA players. WHY!

Fox, I already skipped on Castaway. I skipped on Man of Fire. I WILL be skipping this. Do you even want my money?

xfilekr 12-31-07 01:12 PM

I continue to not own Fox titles when they decide special features aren't needed. LAME

Nice to see ID4 is at least back on the schedule.

I don't condone the absence of extras, but in my case, it's been 7 years since I spent money on this film (the 5 star collection), and seeing as I'd be lucky to get $4 net off selling that DVD, I'll just hang on to that for the extras if necessary or give it to a friend. Can't wait to get this film in HD.

wow... I thought I was the only one! I LOVE Unbreakable. The DVD was a blind buy for me back in the day, and actually, it's the only one of his movies I own on DVD. :)

I also love Unbreakable. It has come to surpass Sixth Sense on my list of favorite MNS films (Signs being my favorite).

I saw it in the theater and really liked it, though many did not. If it did not have the burden of following Sixth Sense I think it would have been more well received.

PixyJunket 12-31-07 01:42 PM

Unbreakable! Hell yes.

Keeping the extra discs is the big pain in the ass, especially when all the SD content could have easily been ported to a 50GB BD.

I'll wait for another BOGO sale to pick this one up.

Just give me 1080p and lossless and I'm happy. I mean how many times are you going to go through the extras? Considering most of us have already seen the extras on ID4 I really have no desire to watch it again.

Supermallet 12-31-07 02:44 PM

I never owned the Five Star Collection of ID4 and would like all of those features, especially given the shitty BD-J game that they put on there.

I never have. Ive never owned ID4 on DVD (that I can recall) and would love to see it, and watch extras in HD. Fox won't allow me to do this. I will not go out and spend $40 on their extra-less movie and then another $10-$15 for the SD for those extra features.

I don't see why they can't just include the extras in the first place. Instead, they design some stupid Java game that will only work on PS3s, and even then, who really want to play some cheesy java based game? I can see that feature working on kids movies, but not ID4.

Fox, I hate you.
Give me X-Men 1 and 2 already!

GreenMonkey 12-31-07 03:01 PM

There's quite a few Fox, or Sony, titles I've passed up entirely for this reason. (Sony titles included Memento & Jay and Silent Bob).

The Momento LE has some great special features including a branching commentary that tells you 3 different things about the ending. Not sure which commentary is on the blu-ray or if this is included, but the rest of the features are mostly gone.

I simply will not buy these discs. Double dipping is bad enough, but double dipping and getting the extra content stripped = no sale. I'm not interested in keeping the old DVD on my shelf for the content, either. We've got enough DVDs/games/Books etc as it is.

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is a Buena Vista (Disney) title, not Sony....

Not to defend them or anything, but it was also one of their first Blu-ray releases from real early on (launch even I believe), so it is MPEG2 encoded and on a 25 gig single layer disc....

I'm sure if they released it today, it would be AVC on a 50GB dual layer disc and have all the extras from the 2 disc standard def edition....oh well, I love Kevin Smith flicks and snapped it up at 14.99 anyhow, I wasn't going to get rid of my DVD anyway, this Blu-ray just supplements it...

<s>Fox sucks. Fox sucks. Fox sucks. Fox sucks.

It just has to be said every time they announce a release.</s>

mod note: Enough already. And the next time you say it, you will be suspended. -namja

What is objectionable here?

Fox IS terrible, especially with Disney knocking it out of the park time after time. This is not a BD bashing comment.

Damed 12-31-07 09:47 PM

Sound to me like Fox is setting the stage for the old Double Dip later on.

The objection is what exactly does the comment "Fox sucks" repeated multiple times do? I hate Fox's releases as much as anyone here, but at least my complaints are to a specific point (i.e. that Fox is removing extras for no good reason and replacing them with awful BD-J games that nobody wants).

I thought of this, but really, if they can't improve the picture or sound, how many people will double-dip for extras (in SD or HD)?

At this point these should be focusing on selling as many copies of each movie as possible, but if they continue with these release, it just means more and more people will skip. Ive passed on several Fox releases and simply won't purchase them until they are under $20 (or BOGO).

Its funny how they release a movie like "The Fly" which is 20 years old and is packed with tons of features, yet for a high profile release like ID4 or Castaway, they choose to include only a few extras. Baffles me.

I just hope they don't pull this with X-Men I and II, which are very high on my want list for 2008.

Arpeggi 12-31-07 10:34 PM

Fox sucks. They remove extras for no reason!

Fox sucks. Those BD-J games never work!

Supermallet 12-31-07 10:45 PM

You might be trying to make a point, but the warning applies to you as well.

Deftones 12-31-07 11:00 PM

Guys, let's not get all the ad revenue that Fox contributes pulled from the site!
