It might also anger a few people, but if it truly IS the next generation, then at some point the studios need to treat it as such..

I remember the day when I saw advertising that went "xxx now on DVD!.. (pause) and also available on VHS". It really sent a powerful message. at least in my opinion.

and please ensure that ALL supplements from any SD version is included in the high def one, shall we?

A better description is it would anger millions of people. I don't think I'd want to do that if I ran a studio. It would kill their home video revenue, especially since you're talking about holding a release back an entire quarter.

I'm sure the news would get worse when you say not only can you not buy the $15 dvd version you are accustomed to doing, but we want you to buy a $400 high-def player to watch the movie, which now costs $30.

As time goes by I have less and less interest in special features. I'm not double buying anything and will want the movie over anything else. If I really must see the special features I'll rent the bonus disc.

Ok, thats nuts. He does however claim that TL51 discs have been running in an XA1 which only needed a firmware upgrade which is pretty cool if true. This war just gets better everyday!

Beatboy and Rdjam are two guys I pay no attention to in this format war. Remember beatboy saying that he had some huge info that was going to change the face of the format war in favor of Blu-ray just hours after the Paramount defection. Both guys are completely nuts!

You are so right. DVD+R and DVD-R, Playstation and XBox, Nintendo and Sega. Two successful formats have NEVER been on the market simultaneously.

did he actually ever say it was New Line? i think that was just suggested by others as a joke to mock him. nevertheless, that guy is bonkers and deserves the mockery.

Im of the same mind now... Dont get me wrong, I think its utterly ridiculous that certain studios put out Hi Def discs that are bare bones with the price so high, but for me though now, I care about great picture, great sound, at a good price.

I'm talking about movie formats, not games. Okay, how about VHS and DVD - does that work?

not really. there was never much of a competition between VHS and DVD. DVD was a clear replacement format with overwhelmingly obvious advantages that not only overtook VHS, but revolutionized the home video market. DVD sales have generated far more revenue than VHS sales ever did.

this format war simply has no precedent in the relatively young home video market. not even VHS vs. BETA is all that comparable. we all want to be armchair market analysts, but none of us really know what is feasible and what isn't.

E Unit 12-14-07 12:54 PM

Actually that was kind of my point. The only format war I remember was the Beta vs. VHS war, and ultimately there was a winner in that one. Hence my earlier posting about being tired of it all. I'll stay as interested as anyone else - and I am not any kind of authority on it - i'm just the average consumer waiting to see what body (or bodies) float down the river.

Profile 1.1 for PS3 coming tomorrow!

chanster 12-17-07 10:02 AM

VHS/Beta was different because that was the first mass home video product. Right now there is a very good video format out there its called DVD..with a massive installed base.

So I don't think the lessons of VHS/Beta really apply here...IMHO

Nice to hear, although I would've liked to have seen DTS HD-MA decoding instead (unless that's part of this update and just wasn't expressly mentioned).

The Bus 12-17-07 10:24 AM

I'm sure it's not practical, but it would be nice for studios to release HD movies the Friday before the Tuesday of release.

Agree 100%.

XavierMike 12-17-07 11:05 AM

Wasn't the latest rumor about dts-hd ma that we would get it in January?

Gizmo 12-17-07 11:18 AM

Good news about 1.1 for the PS3. I'd love to check out some of Saw IV's stuff.

Agreed, considering the earliest we'll see any real 1.1 content is sometime in January. We could use the DTS-HD MA decoding right now.

At this point we need to see the decoding or studios need to dump DTS MA all together. Why put a format on there as the only lossless option if 99% of users can't decode it?

I think DTS MA will still be on some discs so that the studios don't get sued by DTS for anti-competitive behavior.

Exactly. Seems kinda stupid to spend time, money and space for something that 99% of people simply can't play, nor can the players even decode them. Why not instead put extras on there (Fox, HELLO!?!??).

Saw IV and RE:3 will have 1.1 features, right?
Thats a few weeks away. I'll be grabbing both and the PS3 sure as hell better be able to play those extras.

Zen Peckinpah 12-17-07 09:44 PM

Isn't MA bitstream apparently coming in January?

Harry Lime 12-17-07 09:46 PM

PS3 firmware 2.10 is live!
