RUMOR: Warner Bros. and Wal-Mart offered considerable money to go format exclusive..

Check out the story here: http://www.latimes.com/business/la-f...,7403241.story

I pretty much presumed all of this but reading it here suggests that WB and Wal-Mart are strongly considering it....

You got your story wrong. Walmart is considering going Blu-ray exclusive.

Both stories are currently both in the realm of rumor. I just want to make that clear before we start a discussion about it.

damn, as much as I hate to, here's a link to digitalbits commenting on the story:http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#mytwocents, where they quote 'Toshiba has pledged to [Wal-Mart] "a large cooperative promotional budget to support HD DVD sales."'

Admittedly, I couldn't find that quote in the article so make of that what you will.

Where do you get your info from?

Even the DigitalBits, which should be renamed 'We love Blu-ray', concurs with the OP. Toshiba is in talks to give Wal-Mart a large sum of money, same with WB.

It would be nice if all movies were available on both formats so that a format could win on its merits instead of from crap like this. If walmart went exclusive, like it or not, it would be a huge push for that format.

Only if the price is right.

What's more, Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the dominant seller of DVDs, has been contemplating whether to boot stand-alone HD DVD players from its shelves in favor of Blu-ray. Wal-Mart executives would not talk about the company's conversations with suppliers, but said it would continue to carry hardware and software in both formats until consumers indicate a clear preference.
There are a few conflicting things in this reporting, to say the least ....

Heh, old Blu-Ray Bill seems pretty worked up over this rumor. It's amusing that he (and a lot of other BD fanboys) continue to rant about money changing hands. Isn't that how business works? How else did Sony manage to line up so much studio support at the beginning and how else did they "convince" Target and others to promote BD? Please...

I can find my HD-DVD's and I can get Warner titles on HD. So I really don't care how it goes, either way. It still just baffles me how BR backers that have large voices on the net can actually still nit-pick this tactic when Sony has been doing it for a long time already.

Actually, I found it kinda funny!

A rant about Toshiba paying off WB and then a knock at the "big studio" CEO, a final rant about everything being about money.

Then ... the very next entry is...
Warner's sent over another announcement this morning.
All about money indeed!

Out of the whole article, I think this is 100% wrong.

"This is an eye chart test," said James Burger, a lawyer who represents technology companies in Washington. "You don't even begin to see the difference unless the screen is larger than 42 inches."
I have a 32 inch and I could CLEARLY see a difference.

Bookmark this quote so we can reminisce about it if WalMart becomes BD exclusive.

Ok, so the very article has this

So how was I wrong?

We are talking Walmart here...right? By default, does that not imply Walmart would set a price point that appeals to J6P for both HD-DVD titles and presumably HD-DVD?

but Walmart sets the bars so low in their sheer evilness, it has drawn an entire nation to be cheap bastards and not to give a toss at what cost and outcome on local, national and international economics.

(steps off soapbox)

Blasphemy! Oh wait no, you're spot on.

I'm a huge supporter of HD-DVD over Blu-ray, I don't get the game console-style fanboyisms though.

My thing is, why aren't either camps going for Best Buy? Best Buy would be the real coup over Walmart. I would never buy any electronics from Walmart to begin with and i'm sure most of you share my sentiment as well. Getting Best Buy would be huge considering how well they are pushing high def.
