If the standalone and box set sell as good as I think they will, this will only encourage Sony to price their discs at that cost. Everyone complains about the price, but everyone bends over quite contently for Sony nevertheless.

Why's everyone complaining? The entire trilogy should come out to $70 at most on Amazon (most likely less, ala Matrix trilogy). That will average about $23 per movie, plus you get a nice box. Is anyone in their right mind gonna purchase SM3 on its own, the worst of the trilogy?

The Matrix Trilogy on HD-DVD is $63.95 at amazon which is roughly $21.33 each and had a free download of The Animatrix thru X-box live.

This was one of the few Sony releases that might have someday began me thinking about thinking about getting a ps3 or stand-alone blu-ray. As it stands now...not so much.

Wow, $50.....most be some kind of "special" Blu-Ray disc. That is just ridiculous. We are reverting back to the days of initial VHS an Laserdisc pricing.

I'm going to take back what I said earlier and just wait to see how much the trilogy set ends up being discounted at various merchants. MSRP really doesn't mean all that much because none of us here are ever going to pay msrp on a disc.

Im not too concerned with the boxset price.

Im complaining, because Sony is crazy if this is their new MSRP for a 2 disc set. $50 is ridiculous.

Must-have titles I would most likely still purchase for higher price, but alot of on-the-fence titles will remain standard def for me!

If it's any consolation, the DVD folks are getting gouged by Sony too... MSRP on the Spidey 3 2-disc DVD is $36.95. Not sure I understand what Sony is thinking on this.

Sony is thinking they made over $300 million at the box office, so people will buy this movie at any price.

Right. The word from Sony insider paidgeek on AVS:
The plan is to have a full featured version of SM1 and SM2 sometime in the future. There just was not time or resources to make a definitive version of all three titles right now.
The time and resources demanded in including something already produced and...hell, already compressed must be enormous. It's not as if they've had ages to prep for this knowing that there'd inevitably be a boxed set at the tail end of 2007.

I guess the mentality is: "we're going to release a better version later, so why bother at all now?"

Hasn't Sony's line about Blu-ray been that everything on the disc should be in high definition? Perhaps the extras from SM1 and SM2 are not in HD. Not the best excuse, but it would be a better reason than "We didn't have time to slap on pre-existing extras."

Yeah, but they've included standard definition extras a fair number of times despite that. There's no real consistency one way or the other.

Spider-Man 2 will, however, include both versions via seamless branching (as has already been mentioned). It may not make up for the extras, but it's definitely a nice touch.

Paramount was worse than that when they set $39.99 list prices for their 2-disc dvd sets of Mission Impossible 3 and World Trade Center. I don't remember that much complaining about those.

It's still disappointing though. There is no excuse for Sony not adding all the extras on parts 1 and 2.

I thought 50gig was enough?

Of course it's enough. But Sony needs to make up for the loss they are taking on every PS3 somehow.

Paidgeek may be a great and reliable source of information, but his explanation as to the lack of extras on SM 1 and 2 is pure corporate B.S. They didn't have "time" to prepare proper special editions? What, they didn't know they were going to be releasing these movies in the fall? Please.

I'm guessing all the featurettes will be in HD, otherwise, is there really a need for a 2-disc set? Is it "really" 100GB of content?

If Sony wants to charge $50 for Spider-Man 3, bless them. If this lets them put out more of their non-blockbuster movies (Almodóvar, particularly), that's fine.

So a 5-disc HD set of Blade Runner is $28 and a 4-disc Spiderman Trilogy is $70? Sony should take a page from WB's book if they want Blu-ray adoption rates to go up. I won't pay more than $20 for an HD movie, so I'll pick up the trilogy if I can find it for $60 or less.

1) I think people fail to understand just how long it takes to put out one movie in high definition. Last I checked, it was over 4 months from production to mastering to manufacturing. I think it's plausible that they may not have had the time to finish it in time for the holidays. Plus it's Sony, the master of the multi-dip.

2) BD-J was probably another factor I think that they are just going with a movie only release for the first two titles because 1.1 players only come out in Oct and they can't expect people to upgrade to the player just to play these discs. I also imagine that they must be working on some cool BD-J features so now they have enough time.

3) As Suprmallet said, they probably don't have the extras in HD for Spiderman which is holding them back.

I think they know most of us will buy this release and buy the feature-laden trilogy pack whenever that comes out.

^ Yeah, I believe you are correct.

Sony's better move would have been to release the first 2 before the 3rd one's theatrical release. It would have been a huge blow to hd-dvd with Spidey and POTC coming out in the same month. Its likely that they were not ready so they pushed to when S3 comes on DVD.
