It looks like Spidey will beat Capt. Jack Sparrow to the claim of first major trilogy released in hi-def Blu-ray when Sony Picture Home Entertainment releases all three "Spider-Man" movies on Oct. 30.
Disney's third Pirates movie hits stores in Blu-ray on Dec. 4.
"Spider-Man 3," the year's top-grossing movie ($336 mil. in U.S. according to boxofficemojo.com) will feature six hours of bonus features in a two-disc set ($49.95) and also be available as part of a four-disc "Spider-Man High-Definition Trilogy" pack (SRP, $98.95). The other two discs in the 4-platter set feature "Spider-Man" on one disc (film only) and a second disc with "Spider-Man 2" and "Spider-Man 2.1."
The two-disc special edition features more than 6 hours of bonus features including making-of documentaries, multiple audio commentaries, bloopers, and a music video (detailed below), all of which are also available on the two-disc DVD version for $13 less at $36.95.
So, that means there are no bonus features unique to the Blu-ray version or that utilize the technology that make Blu-ray distinctive from DVD, which is a little disappointing.
But hey, for now, there will be enough eye-candy to cover me for weeks with about 7 hours of all three "Spider-Man" movies to relish in in hi-def, and six hours of new bonus features. Sometimes I think we need to take a breath once in awhile and not unrealistically expect and demand every single movie and every single element of every movie to be instantly available to us in every possible top-grade format and codec the instant that we want it.
But yikes, that $13 is a pretty significant difference in pricing (it's a whopping $21 more than the single disc "Spider-Man 3" on DVD and PSP).

Dissapointing that the first two look to be barebones releases. How long has Sony had to work on those? At least they're only charging $25 retail for them.... on the other hand, it looks like pricing for their two-disc movies is $50 (spidey 3 and CE3K) - another negative.

Compared to the six discs we get for the Pirates trilogy, I can't help but be underwhelmed. Of course, three yrs down the road we'll probably get the bells and whistles box set with Spidey 4.

Yeah, I'll pick it up... hopefully for no more than $60 somewhere though...

Spider-Man 2 AND Spider-Man 2.1. I'm digging it.

They gave Spider-man 3 a list price of $49.99? Holy shit. That listing makes it seem like parts 1 and 2 are only available in the set. I think we will still see all the extras on the first 2 movies.

Even though Spider-Man 3 is probably one of the biggest disappointments I've ever had at the movies in my entire life, I'll be buying the trilogy boxset. That list price for Spidey 3 alone is insane! I'm glad they included Spider-man 2.1, I haven't seen it yet and the original cut is one of my favourite movies. This boxset should sell like crazy.

The complete lack of extras on Spidey 1 and 2 is weak. Especially when the list price for the trilogy set is 100 bucks. The Matrix Ultimate Collection cost that much and had literally everything you could want on there(except for The Animatrix in HD).

I am glad they're including Spidey 2.1. More seamless branching on Blu-ray and HD-DVD would be a good thing.

I didn't hold off on the initial SD offerings but I am certainly getting this set as well.

$50?!?!? Come on Sony, give us a break.

I did not like Spidey 3 either as much as the first two. But I will propably end up buying the set anyways. I am such a sucker for boxsets. :(

I guess I'll netflix S-m3 first to see if the movie is as disappointing as everything I've read. If by some odd circumstance I actually enjoy it, I'll spring for the box set. Otherwise, I'll be content to wait until they release the second film as a stand alone.

Then again, if they are in seperate Bd cases, I may just buy the set and sell off #3 (and maybe #1).

As for Spidey: $50 for a two-disc set of SM3 is shameful. And putting out the first two movies in barebone editions, considering all the supplements they have already stockpiled, is infuriating.

However, I love these movies so much I'm still buying the set.

From what it sounds like, they'll be no bonus features on the trilogy boxset for any of the films as they're saying it's only four discs.

Unless all the bonus material for the first two films is going to be encoded in 480p MPEG-2? I don't see that happening, especially since the films are going to include BOTH loseless TrueHD and PCM tracks.

I want the trilogy, but I won't pay more than $60 for it. I can wait.

I agree with others here. With the amount of extras we got with both the Matrix Collection and (so far) Pirates, it's weird to paying so much for bare discs.

I'll be picking up Spider-Man 3, but I'm not sure if I want to replace my SD discs of 1/2 just yet.

$100 is steep. Maybe I'll save some of my DVD PLanet trade in credit to lessen the blow. But I know special editions of 1 and 2 are going to come down the line.

The 4th disc will be the Spidey 3 extras....I bet all of the S1 and 2 extras will be put on the main discs. I dont see any reason they wouldnt fit since they are SD.

No where in that article does it say that Spiderman 1 and 2 will be featureless. The disc specs on those are just not available yet. Sony 2006 would have given us a bare bones release. Sony 2007, who learned from 2006 mistakes, has done a very consistent job of providing most of the dvd extras on their BD discs. Why should we think differently now?

50 gig of space is more than enough room for high bitrate AVC 1080p transfers of a 2 hour movie, PCM and TrueHD sound, and dvd extras.

Im just shocked at the MSRP of S3. $49 is ridiculous and a step back imo. Prices should not be going up at this point.

When WB is giving us a 5 disc set of Blade Runner for $39 retail.

Purely ridiculous and just another reason to hate Sony.

Indeed, the list of Sony discs that retain all of the bonus features from the DVD edition is much shorter than the list of those that drop features.

Wow, even with the amazon 30% off msrp, S3 is going to be 34.99. Is Sony the new Fox when it comes to MSRP?

Maybe they'll see fit to throw a commentary or two on there, but it doesn't look very promising. (maybe a half-hr of trailers though) This is Sony's crown jewel - and two of the three films will likely have less features than Arlington Road - that's pathetic. An insider on the BD forums said they just didn't have time... oh you mean the yr and half since launch?....with films that had existing bonus material which just needed to be slapped onto a disc?!
