This isn't so much of a BR item, but what's the point of this? I know in theory film holds more resolution than present HD source material, but what the true "advantage" of bringing these older films to next generation formats - as a stuido and as a viewer? I would imagine the upscaling function on these players. Now if you're planning on remastering anyway, then sure take advantage of what you have. And perhaps that's what's happening here, but it's not apparant to me.

As for your post - RLR is a good film. Haven't seen Das Boot.

The "advantage" is that if the film elements are in good condition, they will always look better in HD than on DVD.

Fair point - and I'll leave it at that. I don't want to thread jack anymore than I already have.

Lawrence of Arabia is another one of those titles that could get me to start thinking about thinking about blu-ray.

Is your question about the quality of older movies, or do you just not want to watch movies more than a few months old?

I got mine in today too. Very, very surprised at how quickly everything was turned around -- it hasn't even been a full month.

I got the second email but not the first. Perhaps you could try resending the first?

I believe that the SD DVD release of Lawrence of Arabia: Collector's Edition has been pushed back to 1/29/08. Perhaps the BD version will be released then.

Well, looks like Disney is serious about Blu-ray. They just announced Ratatouille day and date on Nov 6 with Blu-ray exclusive features. Damn my wallet is going to be light this fall!

Mentions that BD standalone units are picking up in sales since the release of the Sony BDP-S300.

Very good news indeed. For Blu-ray to truly succeed, the standalone units got to be sold like hotcakes. This takes away from the dependancy on the PS3 as the crutch.

At Ultimate Electronics and Abt Electronics...
At those two retailers only...which I have personally never heard of. How are standalones doing at places like Best Buy, Circuit City, and Fry's is whats important.

Abt Electronics is in Chicagoland area, and the size of the display area is probably 10 times the size of Best Buy. They carry every imaginable electronics item from low end to extremely high end. They've always given me a great deal on items I've bought there, and although they are located probably 40 miles from my house, they provide free delivery (usually next day). Really, once you step into their store, you'll never deal with Best Buy and Circuit City again. I imagine they sell more blu-ray players than all of the Fry's stores combined.

Ultimate Electronics, though, I haven't been into, but I've seen their ads when visiting my parents near St. Louis.

Since you haven't heard of them, it's insignificant? I see. For someone who "supports" Blu-ray, you seem to get upset/defensive when good BD news is posted. It's very strange.

How many stores does this chain have? Are they at all comparable to Best Buy or Circuit City which is in nearly every state and within 20 miles from each other? Doubtful. That's why I don't find this to be big news at all, even if it was regarding HD DVD.

Abt Electronics has 1 single store.
Ultimate Electronics looks to have about 100 or so stores.

I'd be more interested to see how many players Best Buy sells in regards to this war. Of course, that would be skewed as its the same old 'do we, or do we not include PS3s' argument.

Sony insider has said that the MSRP on Spiderman 3 will be dropped before release. This is most likely for the single disc and not the box set.

Is there going to be two Spider-Man 3 releases on Blu-ray? 1 Disc and another 2 Disc?

Just one release as far as I know. I think QuePaso was saying that the individual release would get a price reduction but the boxset of all three films would not.

It would only make sense for Sony to drop the MSRP if they would like to have some record-setting numbers come release week. If Sony does the right thing and lowers MSRP to lets say 38.95, I don't see any reason why S3 won't do less than 300k on BR come release week.
