If you're interested, here's a list of everything Questar has released on VHS/DVD. They look to be a producer of TV movies, documentaries, and travelogues who release their own material on home video.

This has certainly been a busy week for BD. Kubrick is showing up. Target will begin to push BD. And they are the first to get a Spielberg title released. Plus, all the big exclusives this Christmas: Spiderman 1-3, Pirates 3, Cars, Lost Season 3, Die Hard, and catalog titles like Lawrence of Arabia are also planned as well. I think the Sony player could be available for around $300 once the holidays hit. I'm feeling more confident that Blu-ray will win out. I still have my A1 since launch day, but I think the future of HD is still going to be solely released in blue cases.
One thing that everyone should notice is Blu-ray is gaining support, after already having the majority backing it. Blockbuster and now Target will favor BD. That can't hurt.

I do not know if hd-dvd will ever go away, but it does seem that Bluray will become the main hi-def format (I still think it will not appeal to the masses ever...DVD is here for a long while).
Im beginning to change my philosophy though. Now, all things being equal, if a release is coming out on both formats, ill go with Bluray. IME or lossless sound will sway me towards HD-DVD.
With the problems ive had with my XA2 lately (lockups on The Untouchables), Im enjoying watching movies on my S300 more. I still watch standard DVDs on my XA2 though.

The Sony has its quirks (no TrueHD, fast forward sucks), but it plays fine and looks good. Im happy with it so far. I still think the Panny is prettier!

If reviews of the new Samsung dual player are excellent (for HD, BD and SD) this fall, then ill sell both my XA2 and S300 to get it. But, I kinda doubt it will be the messiah.

I saw some info posted on the new Pioneer BR unit over at Engadget. BDP-LX80.
Pioneer just announced that Blu-ray Disc player with "HD audio bitstream output" they alluded to with the launch of their BDP-LX70. In what appears to be an industry first for BD players, the new BDP-LX80 supports bitstream output of both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD high resolution lossless audio output over HDMI 1.3. Sorry, no DTS-HD Master Audio this time. Still, a worthy update from the LX70 assuming your home theater gear is properly matched to decode that signal. Something you'll want to check, and double-check, before dropping the tax inclusive roll of ¥210,000 or about $1,768. We could be wrong, but the move from the LX70 to LX80 appears to be a firmware change only so why all the fuss with a new model Pioneer?

Hitachi releases Blu-Ray/hard drive camcorder
http://www.digitalcamcordernews.com/...ders#more-1012

Today just seems to be the day for camcorder announcements, and Hitachi has joined the club by officially unveiling the world’s first Blu-Ray camcorders. The Hitachi DZ-BD70 will record to mini Blu-Ray disks and the Hitachi DZ-BD7H will record to both hard drive and Blu-Ray disk, which is what I would call the ultimate hybrid camcorder.
Both the Hitachi DZ-BD70 and DZ-BD7H are capable of recording one hour of Full HD (1920×1080) footage to Blu-Ray Disc (BD). BDs have 5 times the capacity of regular 8cm MiniDVDs and can be played in any compatible Blu-Ray player.
Both camcorders also feature a 1/2.8″, 5.3 megapixel CMOS sensor with an effective 2.07 megapixels for video and 4.32 megapixels for stills. You will also get a 10x optical zoom (electronically stabilized) and 2.7″ widescreen LCD on the Hitachi DZ-BD70 and DZ-BD7H.
Video on the Hitachi DZ-BD70 and DZ-BD7H can be output via HDMI, S-video or USB 2.0. Thankfully, Hitachi has also included a microphone jack on both camcorders.
The hybrid Hitachi DZ-BD7H also includes a dubbing capability, which allows you to transfer your video from the 30GB hard drive to Blu-Ray disc at 2x speed. This lets you do some basic in-camcorder editing without the need for a computer. You can even downconvert to standard definition and dub to regular DVD-R or DVD-RW media for playback in that “old” DVD player.
If you are using the HDD or a BD-RE disc (re-writable version of a BD disc), Hitachi says you can do basic editing functions such as split, delete and connect right inside the camcorder, no PC required. You can also create and rearrange playlists of your clips.
The Hitachi DZ-BD70 and DZ-BD7H will begin selling in Japan later this month, and will be available in overseas markets starting in October. Right now, no price point has been announced.

Many insiders have been saying that fox has been encoding movies to blu-ray this whole time and that there will be a flood of titles out end of november/all of december. Supposed to be 50+ titles planned. This is of course hearsay, but things seem like they're going to be ok.

Fox was waiting for BD+, an extra layer of copy protection, to be activated before recommencing Blu-ray releases. Hopefully they also took the time to include, oh, I don't know, some extra features!

It's now August. There's only 4 months left in the year. I sure as shit hope we hear something soon from those guys. The Digital Bits said we would hear something soon a couple of weeks ago. Then again, they have said that about 5 times in the last 2 months.

Mini Blu-Ray Disc Media coming from Verbatim
Verbatim Corporation and its parent company, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (MKM), have announced the world’s first Mini Blu-ray Recordable/Rewriteable (BD-R/RE) media. Measuring three inches (8cm) in diameter, the new 7.5GB discs provide approximately one hour of continuous video capture time on a single side when high definition (1920×1080i) is used, and approximately two hours of video capture time with images recorded at 1440×1080i.
MKM Mini BD media will be available in August in Japan, where the new Hitachi BD-compatible camcorder will be launched. Verbatim will begin shipments to other parts of the world, including North America, when the new BD-compatible camcorders become available in the region.
Verbatim says that the new Mini BD discs will share similar performance characteristics of its standard (12 cm) BD media, including technologies developed by MKM to guard against deterioration. The proprietary hard-coat finish on Verbatim BD media features anti-static and anti-scratch properties for added protection against scratches, fingerprints and dust particles that can occur during normal camcorder and home use.
Verbatim’s new Mini BD media now in production at MKM’s blue laser optical disc manufacturing facility in Mizushima, Japan.

Just read on the Digital Bits that they've been told by insiders that Sony is working on Blu-ray versions of Das Boot and Run Lola Run for release in early 2008. That is great news. I'm glad to hear some news about movies that are made before 2000. BD's catalog is lacking in older titles. I hope Sony is able to finish Lawrence of Arabia in time to release this year.

I received the five free Blu-ray movies today from the latest rebate promotion. I mailed the forms on July 3, so this was a very quick turnaround and all of the discs were sealed and in mint condition.
