Really? I've heard that online rentals are turning them around.

I know $499 is still high for many, but Sony is finally moving in the right direction in terms of standalone player pricing. I think it's possible the BDP-S300 could be in the $300 range for Christmas. I think the BD group will try to win this war outright during the holiday season. They will have a large amount of "popular" exclusives to promote (Spidey 3, Pirates 3, Fantastic Four 2, etc.). And the Matrix set will likely arrive on BD during that time.
Support is one thing. Support without delivering is another. Fox where are you?

I favor HD DVD but buy for both formats. There just more movies on HD I'm interested in. Sure blu gets all the newly released blockbusters but those are the movies I'm less interested in.

Now announcements like the Last Starfighter and Legend is reason alone 'for me' to buy a player. But if Fox announced Alien/Aliens now that would be something to look forward to. But so far nothing is getting me excited cept for maybe the Spidey flix.

Blockbuster never carried my laserdiscs, and those lived for like 10 years.

I wouldn't worry too much.

I agree. If/when Fox announces Big Trouble in Little China on Blu (not to mention Alien/s, Predator, Donnie Darko, Fight Club and the SW Trilogy), I'll start to seriously consider my allegiances. But despite the studio backing, more hd-dvd titles interest me right now.

Same people who keep Wal-Mart in business.

I'd imagine shelf space is an issue, especially for the new HD formats which can't be in very high rental demand at Blockbuster given their demographic. I'd think most people with Bluray or HD players are more likely to just buy or rent online.

I'd imagine Sony might offer Blockbuster better pricing on the purchase of the rental discs because of exclusivity. This happens a lot in business. Resturaunt chains make exclusive deals with Coke, and Pepsi for better pricing.

In 1977 they were not called laserdiscs...they were called video disc and this was RCA's technology. Pioneer (I believe) introduced laserdisc in 1980 with Dragoin's Lair that I use to play down at the local DQ.

BD backers were making fun of Toshiba practically "giving away" the players during this $299.99 sale.

All the while, BD probably was brokering an exclusivity agreement with Blockbuster for $1.00-$5.99 BD discs to rent, giving away the software.

Hey, if this makes the war END, I'm all for it. But I'm sticking with HD-DVD until it is over. HD-DVD has more than enough titles to keep me interested while I wait.

This came from paidgeek (Sony insider) at AVS in the thread discussing Blockbuster's decision:

"I have heard from a reliable source that Target will go BD hardware exclusive..."

This may be very true, but where I think the Blockbuster deal may be important is for people who haven't bought into either format. Seeing a decent sized selection at BBV could legitimize the format. I remember before we got a DVD player that I started seeing a big selection in Costco and that was what made the DVD format seem mainstream to me.

For the same reason(s) I back BR.

As I stated elsewhere the fact that Almodovar is already on BR means a lot. I also believe that it is more likely that Sony-Columbia will be more flexible in releasing foreign cinema on BR. I don't get that feeling loking at what HD is producing at this point.

What on earth makes you think Universal would do that? A studio can release a movie on Blu-ray without selling the rights to said movie to Sony.

Oh I definitely agree. I was just saying that's probably one reason Blockbuster could justify not carrying both--not many are going to be renting them right now anyway, so might as well just use the shelf space for one format. And they went with Bluray since it's selling more discs so it seemed like the way to go, or Sony gave they $$$ incentives to do so.

What? If HD DVD went belly up, you wouldn't want Universal to release on Blu-ray? Why the hell not?

Aren't Universal and Sony bitter rivals for quite some time?, that would make universal a sellout in my book. i would rather universal remain exclusive than
fathom Universal releasing say: The Game with Criterion like treatman on blu-ray. That's just me though.

I don't think the term "sellout" can be applied to any film studio. None of them have any principles.
