Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?

Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
I am also getting concerned about this and The Princess Bride...also not on Amazon.
Looks like Kingpin isn't coming out for sure, though. Really pissed about that.

Interesting that Kingpin was supposed to come out in Aug of last year, then this year. Here is the artifact of it: http://www.amazon.com/Kingpin-Blu-ray/dp/B00193F2ZU/

Amazon is not the only place to buy these nor are they the definitive word on releases.
Ronin is coming on the 24th. Some folks have already found copies in stores.
Silence of the Lambs and Princess Bride both have had new press releases from Fox and MGM that list the date and bonus features.

Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
board member reviews at AVS is indicating we are getting yet another craptacular release of a classic from the studios
My copy arrived today....First thing i checked was the back cover which states it's an MPEG2 encode release. ( yuck )
Interesting....I feel they have DNRed away grain and fine detail...It still looks ok and many will find it acceptable but i feel it's lost the finer detail which should be present in HD films on Blu Ray.
Check out the trailer which is in AVC HD....More fine detail ( more grain than was probably present in the actual film print ) - I feel the trailer actually blows away the film on the disc in regards to fine detail and just looking like proper film even though it most likely has stronger grain than was present in the actual film print release.
Now it could be the trailer has also had slight sharpening applied but there is no denying the grain removal on the main feature.
This release reminds me of the movie The Descent....The MPEG2 edition has been degrained although still looks ok just nowhere near as good as the AVC encoded grain edition. ( Xylon can make a comparison thread from this one )
Disappointing to say the least and i think i'm going to be selling my copy....It just looks too smooth but i'm figuring they thought most people would be turned off by the grain. It's amazing that classic fabulous films like this get such bad treatment and i am really disappointed.

OK, I lucked out and found this on the shelf at a video store for rental. After skipping through the blu-ray comparing it with the last dvd release this afternoon, I think FoxyMulder actually understated how poor the new blu-ray transfer is, especially when compared to the (last MGM) dvd release.
The color saturation is significantly toned down and leans more towards cool blues on the blu-ray compared to the warmer and much more natural colors of the dvd. Fleshtones take on a cool, almost pallid look on the blu-ray version. More importantly, significant fine detail has been lost compared to previous dvd releases (including the old non-anamorphic Criterion dvd), no doubt due to digital noise reduction/smoothing.
I can't do screen caps but a good example is comparing the beginning of Chapters 3 and 5 (both the dvd and blu-ray are chapter marked at the same spots through the film) where you can directly compare a portrait framed shot of Dr. Chilton talking while holding a pen and an extreme closeup of Jack Crawford's face between the blu-ray and dvd. Yes, film grain is "washed" away along with the tiny details in the actor's faces.
The color timing changes on the blu-ray work to some extent in shots such as the Lecter prison scenes where the feeling of the cold, damp surroundings in Lecter's cell is better conveyed, but for much of the rest of the movie, especially well lit or daylight scenes, everything simply looks unnaturally desaturated.
Of course, the added resolution of blu-ray over dvd on larger screens will bring out the drawback of the dvds smaller resolution, but imo, I preferred the dvd over the blu-ray by a wide margin on a 1080p 50" screen using a crappy old Toshiba 6200 dvd player (vs the Panny BD30).
A very disappointing no buy for me.

Ugh, I sold off my SE copy (not the newest version of course), but I still have the Criterion. I was really looking forward to this release, but now I'll probably wait until I can get it for around $10-$15.

MPEG2. I knew it. WTF MGM? You had this title planned and sitting for almost 3 years and couldn't be bothered to go back and do it right? This is not 2006 its 2009!
Any words on Extras? I have yet to receive my review copy...but now I'm not looking forward to it

I saw it recently on StarzHD and thought it looked pretty good. I'm going to wait and read reviews from places other than AVS. I don't trust anything posted there regarding BD.

Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
Interesting....the guy says the back of the box states MPEG2, but he does not go on to say it was confirmed as such when he actually put the disc in to view it and see what the player says it is.....
It could still be AVC, as this would not be the first time FOX has listed the wrong codec on the back of the box...Dodgeball is the most recent example where the back of the box lists MPEG2, but it is actually AVC encoded....it also happened with The Simpsons Movie....

he goes on to say it reads as such via the PS3

It's up on ColumbiaHouse.com.....been waiting for the next Blu-ray BOGO to pull the trigger, but the early reviews have me concerned.

Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
I'm pretty surprised they went with an old MPEG2 transfer, although I guess it makes a bit of sense....maybe the "earlier announced/unreleased" version that was going to be barebones was a BD25, and so they just bumped it up to a BD50 to throw the extras on there....too bad, I'll wait until its cheap on a CH BOGO or something somewhere down the line, and just stick with my DVD copy until then....

Re: Silence of the Lambs Blu-Ray?
The back cover has the newer specs info design by Fox. It says it's a BD50. That makes me feel a bit better it's MPEG-2. That gives it some breathing room.
Unlike AVS, I don't look for errors in transfers. I'm too involved in enjoying the movie. So if this matches the presentation I saw on Starz, I'll be fine with it.

Amazon has SOMETHING up...doesn't look like the cover art we've seen, though.
