Is it just me or Blu-ray releases after this week are going to suck badly? There's nothing good coming out in June and July that is exclusive to the format...

It's not just you. I have been thinking the same thing. The only BD-exclusive studio with a decent number of releases is Sony, and out of what is known for the summer, all I really want is the remastered version of The Fifth Element. I keep hoping they'll announce some more titles, but now Sony is scheduling into August and we still don't hear a peep from Fox or Disney (except for a couple of day and date titles like Wild Hogs). At least Warner and Paramount (yes, Paramount) have good slates coming.

BTW, is Warner going to announce HD versions of Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet as day and date with the DVD for August 14th? I'm getting worried that they're going to delay it, especially since they've announced titles for September (the Elvis movies). The wait has been long enough!

'Zodiac' to Stalk Blu-ray, HD DVD This July

Paramount plans to street the flick on both next-gen formats July 24, day-and-date with the standard-def DVD at a suggested list price of $39.95 for each. The studio has not yet revealed specs or supplement details for 'Zodiac,' but we'll keep you posted as further details are announced.

Mr. Cinema 05-22-07 06:54 AM

I missed Zodiac in theaters and will certainly blind buy it.

Hellboy (6/5)
Rescue Me: Season 3 (6/5)
Cruel Intentions (6/12)
The Patriot (7/3)

Plus, depending on what you consider "good", there's also Ghost Rider, Wild Things, Bridge To Terabithia and Flatliners. :)

I preordered Cruel Infections, Wild Things, and Bridge to Terabithia(blind buying it as I've heard great things) from that list. I may still pick up Hellboy and The Patriot down the line.

I agree that Blu-ray's upcoming slate is bare to say the least. This is due mostly to Fox/MGM and Disney's delays.

Most of my upcoming preorders are on HD-DVD thanks to all the titles Universal is releasing. Hopefully they can get a few Hitchcock movies out before the end of the year.

WB claimed in their HTF chat a few months back that Hamlet would be day-and-date on DVD, HD-DVD, and Blu-ray. I am curious though if they'll be able to fit a 4-hour movie on a 30GB disc.

They could always split it in half.

wasn't there an intermission for the theatrical presentation of the film anyway?

Never heard of it, but there's some Marvel animated Blu-Ray title called Doctor Strange coming from Lions Gate on 8/24. Specs show a DTS 7.1 track.

Nice I've enjoyed the Ultimate Avengers and Iron Mam movies so far. I'll definately be picking this one up.

what they couldn't include the two other commentaries from the UK SE?
- Bill Nighy And Penelope Wilton Audio Commentary
- The Zombies Audio Commentary (which is quite enlightening btw)

Doesn't look like it...those extras I listed were all that were on Universal's PR.

I honestly didn't think Universal would port those over for the HD version, I was just being cheeky.

Overpar 05-22-07 01:44 PM

Not sure if this is the right forum, but Blockbuster online has The Green Mile HD DVD as "coming soon". Needless to say, I've put it in my queue!

It was on several flyers that Warners stick in some of their releases...so like Harry Potter and Shawshank Redemption, I think it's a sure thing...the only question is "when".

It would be nice if WB eventually got around to releasing this. I'm trying to avoid buying anymore SD-DVDs if I can help it, so I have yet to get the SE. I know it's a long movie, but put the extras on a 2nd disc if you have to.

XavierMike 05-22-07 05:25 PM

I know that Grubert is busy, but is there any way that someone else could help to updated the release list in the first post? It says it hasn't been updated since 4/12.

Yes, I've expected all along that they will split it up. I believe the intermission is farther into the film, so that will work out nicely to have the first part on disc 1 and the second part and extras on disc 2.

Surprise, Suprise Circuit City is finally pushing HD-dvd. They now have official promo books, and little business cards, to show off the format.

Inside these books is a listing of various HD-dvd titles, some of which we havn't seen including "the Harry Potter Series", Conan the Barbarian, Ocean's Twelve, Braveheart, Forest Gump, Elizabethtown, Spongebob Squarepants, The School of Rock.

The problem is not being busy - the problem is that, every time I try to update it, it gives me an empty post.

However, when Adam edits my post, it comes out okay. Anyway, maybe the easiest solution would be for Adam just to grab the list from avs from time to time (via Quote button) and post it here.

I was over at CC (Tyson's Corner) and one of the largest TV's was showing off King Kong in HD-DVD "whoah!"

Is it still doing that? I thought that was just on the old thread. It was doing that in the old thread for me too, but it seems more cooperative in this new one.

Warners singles out titles for restoration

Plans are in the works for 4k restorations of a number of films from the Warner Bros. vault, including "Blade Runner," "Bonnie and Clyde," "Cool Hand Luke" and the Dirty Harry films "Magnum Force" and "Sudden Impact."

While launch dates have not been announced, the studio has an eye toward offering the restored titles on the two high-definition DVD formats, Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD, as well as standard-definition DVD. The "Blade Runner" release is being planned for this year, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the film's release.

This bug at DVD Talk that rejects long posts has been around since February; I reported it in this Feedback thread:
http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=492770

The last few days things have been working normally for me so I thought it was fixed, but it was reported to still be a problem as recently as May 20.

Grubert might want to try to update his list again and see if things are working ok now.

Hmm, will this be the original unrated cut, or the recently released Director's Cut? Sounds like the former, which would be bad.

It's the original Unrated cut, not the Director's cut.
