So you don't think an ATSC tuner is required to support all 18 formats the ATSC allows? That doesn't make much sense, since the FCC would be shooting itself in the foot if it allowed non-standard ATSC tuners that wouldn't be able to accept everything the broadcasters are allowed to transmit.

Also, it doesn't seem supported by the evidence, like the ATSC's own documents.

A/54: Guide to the Use of the ATSC Digital Television Standard
http://www.atsc.org/document_map/video.htm#A/54
"Transmissions conforming to the Digital Television Standard are expected to include the [18] video formats as described in Table 9.3. Receivers will have to extract the picture rates and video format information, and will have to perform the necessary interpolation and format conversion so that these video formats can be displayed in the ‘native’ display format of the receiver."

I wasn't very impressed. I'm sure they won't mess up THAT HD-DVD.
The Goblet of Fire DVD took a lot of criticism for poor picture quality. I think that's something inherent in the master, if not the photography itself (I didn't see this one in the theater). I wouldn't be too surprised if the HD DVD gets some negative buzz when it comes out.

I saw it twice in theatre, the second time in IMAX. Generally I found the photography very satisfying, though it's very atypical to how most big blockbusters look these days, so I can see why others might not like it. The picture could be grainy, sometimes excessively so near the end, but it had very, very nice shadow detail and (at times) eye-popping colours. I have not seen the DVD.

In comparison, the photography is leaps and bounds ahead of the first two films, but slightly rougher and less polished than the third film. (Kinda like the quality of the films themselves, heh.)

Yeah but Goblet Of Fire had a bit of issues on DVD such as some digital artifact blocking and the black levels weren't all that nice either at times. It was a pretty standard DVD release, where most movies of this calibur on DVD get a near flawless transfer now-a-days. I was pretty disappointed. A chance to get an HD version of this title would be more than welcome, but if the same master was used and it doesn't look to have the digital and black level problems corrected... I'll pass.

Nonetheless, how many HDTVs are there on the market right now that can accept 1080p at any rate, much less at 1080p24? A handful at most. Even most 1080p resolution displays top out their acceptable input at 1080i.

Mine accepts native 1080p, but I think its 1080p60...not for sure.

You are correct though....very few at this time.

For those who ordered the A2 from that porn place, ya ain't getting one.

I messed up.

I'm the manager for Adam and Eve on this project and have talked about the development of the product on this site.

I don't know what other companies are paying for HD A2s but it is a lot more than $250 and we are not going to be able to honor the large number of orders we got for the player.

I apologize.

We planned to sell players only as part of a package with adult HD DVD disks. I put the player in our computer system in order to include it in that package and did not enter the restrictions for its sale. Unfortunately, our web folks did not know it was a non-saleable product and it was put on the web.

We do not charge a card until the product ships so nobody has had any charge on any card. Our web folks will e-mail an apology to those who placed A2 orders and they will get something for my mistake.

Two things I feel the worst about: that my error might harm adult content on HD DVD and that Robert at Value Electronics might get any grief because I messed up. I talked to him a month ago and think he is an excellent guy who will provide the very best deal possible.

Again, sorry for causing the problem. Attached is my e-mail address if you would like to express you feelings directly.

Seconded. I also saw the IMAX and have to agree with what Ian is saying. The lake sequences should look nice and sharp (above water) but a lot of the film is dark and murky.

I'll wait until I see that email before coming to any conclusions. If/When said email arrives, I'll contest it based on the fact that I have a receipt and that there was no indication that the vendor could renege. All signs pointed to it being a legitimate sale. If they had a "Terms and Conditions" section stating that the company could go back on a sale because of mitigating circumstances, I wouldn't have a problem. But, they didn't.

That's not an email. That's a direct post on AVS.

Sounds like I should be receiving an email. Do you perceive it differently?

And for the record, I'm pretty sure that posting something on an Internet message board is not an official way to go about cancelling an order.

When you said "that" email...you didn't specify what you were referring to. I thought you were referring to my posting. :P

And I never said that cancelling via internet message board was a legal way to cancel an order. Then again, I didn't know there was an "illegal" way.

So, Josh_Z is it confirmed that the XA2 will simply upconvert 1080i sources to 1080p like the Sammy bd player does? Ill let my tv do the upconversion if thats the case.

If so, im just gonna cancel my preorder and stick with the A1. Ill wait it out a bit.

So, basically the XA2's 1080p output won't be any better than the A2's 1080i output handled by a 1080p TV with a decent de-interlacer. Correct?

I'm 95% positive. I'd ask and make sure but I remember people posting that the only reason Toshiba is doing it is to "cheat" the same way BD is (saying that it's 1080p when it's not a native 1080p signal).

Damn it, just got a cancellation email from AdamEve.com.

Dear Customer,

Some things are just too good to be true.

And, as much as I hate to have to tell you this, half off the Toshiba HD-DVD player is one of those things.

Our 50% off coupons were never meant to work with select high-end items, like the HD-DVD player. Because of the high wholesale cost to us, we simply can't afford to give this discount.

As our way to apologize, we're going to offer you another 50% off discount coupon to use on the site for the next 2 weeks on any of our other products.

Click here to claim your 50% discount off one item on your next order. Hurry, because this discount is only valid until midnight, Wednesday, December 4. If you are purchasing multiple items, the discount is applied to the lowest-priced item in your cart.

If you have any questions, please contact customer service by email or by phone at 1-800-293-4654.

Once more, I'm sorry for this error and any trouble it might have caused.

Sincerely yours,

Elizabeth Belle
Promotions Manager

Customer
It does what it needs to do, but with a bit of a smart-ass undertone. Even though I was pretty sure it wouldn't go through anyway, I still hate when people back out of a deal. Oh, well. Looks like I'll pre-order one from Best Buy.
