General HD DVD news and discussion

Well I haven't checked out the site (I'm at work), but I assumed they sell porn and toys, am I right? My girlfriend enjoys both, and it's not like that's all I'm getting her for Christmas.

Wii DVD player planned?
In the flood of interviews with top Nintendo execs during the days leading up to the launch of the Wii, there were plenty of quotes flying around. Most of them contained PR speak that covered things gaming newshounds already knew. But NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime happened to drop an interesting quote in a USA Today article.
"Tough choices about not including a DVD player at the start, tough choices about not including high-definition capability at the start. That's because we wanted a mass-market price, and we believe the market will validate those decisions come launch day on this Sunday," Fils-Aime said.
The key phrase here is "at the start." Wiis currently cannot play DVD movies, but Nintendo has already confirmed that a new model will be able to in the latter half of 2007 (in Japan at least). If we apply this logic to the "high-definition capability" statement, it seems that this might only be a temporary setback as well.
We contacted a Nintendo rep to clarify, and while they said that Nintendo is absolutely not currently announcing any plans to upgrade the maximum resolution from 480p, it shouldn't be impossible in theory.
The rep noted that Microsoft was able to patch the Xbox 360 to support 1080p.
After all, continued the rep, Nintendo has already released a patch to allow Wii gamers to transfer game saves to SD cards.
This could be good news for Wii gamers looking for a sharper image on their HD sets. We'll keep you posted on any official announcements.

Adding HD support to the Wii is a lot more difficult than adding a patch. 720p takes processing power and the Wii doesn't have it. The Wii is about the power of the Xbox and that system had very few 720p games and even the ones it had were only marginally better in that mode. The Wii is not about graphics and that won't change.

Here's the article that made the leap in logic just from the above Game Informer article: http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=35919

You can debate if it's true or not till the cows come home, but at least you have something to debate.
Goodbye all, I'm done.

I hooked up the XA1 today, and the thing is a brick shithouse. Even over component, I think that even SD DVDs look a little better than on my old Panny. I have a couple HD DVDs arriving this week, and I can't wait.
Where can I download a disc image for the firmware upgrade? I don't have an ethernet jack in my HT area.
Also, I want to program my Kameleon remote to operate the unit. Anyone know the code?

I am getting a new stop-gap reciever in a few week that has analog ins. The LFE is pretty disapointing over optical, but I know it is much better with analog.
I plan on updating the entire HT by the end of 2007 with a new set/projector, and a new receiver.

Is there a reason some new release DVDs are not being released on HD-DVD at the same time? Clerks 2 just came out on DVD this week but the HD-DVD isn't scheduled until January.

I'm personally curious to see what the extras are going to be on this disc.

Interestingly enough, it looks like Weinstein is using MPEG-4 instead of VC-1.

Sort of an odd question, but do scratches affect HD-dvds more than regular DVDs? (due to there being more data in a smaller space)
I plan on making the upgrade soon, regardless, but I was just curious about this.

Thanks, I figured this was an issue. I keep my discs in good condition, but Ill probably have to avoid the used market (which probably doesn't exist much now anyway)
