Anybody else cut way back on SD DVD purchasing?

Mine has slowed down over the past year, but not because of plans for HD-DVD.
I don't even plan on buying an HD-TV for another couple of years, and I'm not much of a videophile in general.
I just have little time for movies, so I'm trying to buy only the AAA titles that I'll watch repeatedly, and netflixing the rest when I have time.
HD doesn't factor in, as I'll only upgrade a select few favorites that are heavy on eye candy/special effects like Star Wars, LOTR etc. I really couldn't care less what a straight drama, comedy etc. looks like. SD-DVD is more than fine with me in general, so no reason to waste cash upgrading.

Yeah I said that same thing when I first started out. Just remember that if you start watching alot of HD Video, your eyeswill become accustomed to that quality level and when you go back to SD DVD's they wont look nearly as good as they do now. Just something to keep in mind. I went from planning on replacing only some select titles to now replacing everything that I can because of this optical effect. My SD DVD's just dont look very good at all anymore and at least for me, that is a problem.
I actually fell off the SD wagon today and actually purchased my first SD movies in over two months. I just couldnt resist the Exorcist compilation box set. All 6 Exorcist movies and my Best Buy had it on sale for only 25.00. I had a 10% off coupon and a 10 dollar reward zone certificate so I ended up getting it for only like 14 bucks after tax. 14 bucks for all 6 Exorcist movies was just something I couldnt turn down, especially for the Box Set which is really nice with its 4 slim line cases. Oh well, I guess SD still has its place even in my household :-)

This is the same exact thing that happened to me. I was only going to replace a title here and there, but the difference is so glaring I now want all my movies in HD.

I'm running into this as well.
Now that I am seeing movies in HD, SD just looks like.. well.. crap. It bothers me when I watch SD now.
That's the only downside to HD. It sets the bar very high.

I'm slowing down but I'm still buying cheap Circuit City sale titles for $5. At that price point it's almost as cheap as a rental. I held off on buying Body Heat this week in anticipation of a future HD DVD release.

Just don't care much about video quality in general. Plus I can't see replacing my collection which largely just gather's dust anyway, which is another reason for slowing down my buying.
With my busy life I rarely watch movies any more, and when I do it's usually my 1 netflix rental a week.

Yeah I guess it obviously depends on just how much you actually watch movies. If your so busy that you dont even get to watch movies very often then it is perfectly understandable why you would only purchase select titles. I only work like 80 days a year so I have a boatload of free time, sometimes too much free time so I watch quite a bit of cinema. I even watch movies in the darkroom when I am processing film and printing pictures. I just slap a red gel filter over my portable DVD player and kick back. It definitly makes the tedious task of film development much more bearable :-)

Indeed. But even with more time, I don't think I'd upgrade that many as I"m not that picky about the A/V quality.
I'll eventually buy an HDTV and HD-DVD player and start buying all new releases in the format as there's no sense in settling for lesser quality in new releases. But I just can't see myself upgrading more than the select few titles like LOTR, Star Wars etc. that actually get watched more than once a year or so.
For the titles that I love that I generally only break out once every year or two I can deal with upscaled DVD quality.

Besides Cars & Seinfeld I will not be buying any other DVDs this year. HD DVDs are a totally different story.

No in the Hell way!
Life's too short!
There's far too much great stuff out there and I can't (and won't) wait 'til they decide to 'someday' release them on HD. Besides, my A1 (and soon to be XA1) up-converts pretty damn good, and I for one can live with that.

I still buy SD, but I try to only get titles in a price range of $7 or less. I also steer clear of anything likely to be released on HD real soon (new releases).
I agree though the jump is bigger and more impressive than I thought it would be, I am not sure I would go with as big a jump as VHS to DVD, but it is more substantial than I assumed it would be. I try to not watch SD and HD on the same night. That is pretty easy with about 30 HD titles and 1300 SD titles I just split them up. I kind of wish I has skipped a bunch of those 1300 SD titles these days. I am feeling buyers remorse for the first time.

I have only been buying about 6 or 7 a year for the past 2 years.
My last new DVD pickup was Grease (New Jacket Version), love the movie and the video quality. I was not going to pick up the last version, it had a horrible video quality.
Most of the DVDs I pick up now are used:
-$4.99 at Safeway
-4 for 20 (3 for 20) at Blockbuster/Hollywood Video

I haven't bought a dvd in a few weeks but I'm about to break that streak. I will definitely be getting the Bond sets next week. I'm sure Casino Royale will be a Blu-ray title next Spring, but I don't know of the old Bond films will join it. And there's certainly no guarantee all the features will be ported over. I can see them releasing a few separately over a several month period. And I would think they would be BD 50 releases.

I haven't purchased a DVD in almost 3 months, but that's because of spending money elsewhere, not concern over an eventual HD-DVD upgrade (a leap which I just made tonight
). I have a huge list for the DDD sale.
