This will be a definite buy for me as well. Too bad that I'll have to hold onto the Criterion for the extras.

I dont remember, are all the extras on the second disc for Criterion Traffic?? If so, you could just keep that disc (or maybe a 3 disc case??).

Anyways, I dont know if this is a buy for me or not. I have the Criterion and it looks good...well see.

If there is alot of stuff being released around that time, ill hold off.

I believe there are commentaries. Probably not all on the 2nd disc.

Ah true...maybe this release will include those though.

Not unless they bought the rights from Criterion.

Oh, so there were commentaries on it that were not included in the original dvd release? I didnt know that. I havent looked at my criterion version in quite a while.

Nope. Any commentaries are usually Criterion's production. I dont' know of any that were ported over TO criterion like that.

btw...here are the extras:
Disc One: Three commentary tracks: Director Soderbergh and writer Stephen Gaghan; Producers Edward Zwick, Marshall Herskovitz, Laura Bickford & consultants Tim Golden and Craig Chretien; composer Cliff Martinez (with cues not heard in the film). Disc Two: 25 deleted scenes with Commentary; film processing demonstration; editing demonstration; dialogue editing demonstration; 30 min of multi- angle coverage of cocktail party scene and El Paso Intelligence center; trailers, tv spots; US Customs trading cards of drug-sniffing dogs.

No word on when Magnolia Home Entertainment's previously announced titles will make it to HD DVD, but HDNet has a few new titles on their website. No release date yet, but the sticker price is $14.95 (!).

They are:

Best of Get Out!: Vol. 1
Best of Get Out!: Vol. 2
Best of HDNet World Report: Vol. 1
Best of HDNet World Report: Vol. 2

There is some debate over what we're getting with Lethal Weapon: director's cut or theatrical cut. The box says 110 minutes (which means Theatrical) but the website says director's. The box also says "additional scenes" which leads me to believe it IS the theatrical cut.

Here's my problem with this: if it is the theatrical cut, does that mean they're using the original master from the first DVD release in 97 and just adding the additional scenes from the original LW4 DVD? This is shitty, if so.

edit: it's confirmed. It's the theatrical cut. And supposedly the transfer ain't so hot.

what is up with these first batch Warner titles ?? - 'The Fugitive' and 'The Perfect Storm' I've been reading less than stellar transfer reviews and now this...

after seeing 'Blazing Saddles' on my friends home theatre setup - I'm dying to see some more rich colourful transfers/films like 'Saddles'

Saddles was a new transfer. the others are all old ones. :(

Mr. Cinema 06-19-06 01:28 PM

I'll just keep my director's cut of Lethal Weapon and skip the HD DVD. It would be nice if WB didn't slack on some of these releases. Using old transfers is just freakin' lazy.

Oliver Clothesoff 06-19-06 01:30 PM

I've been holding off and renting the older catalog titles for now, because I know they are prime candidates to be revisited and remastered down the road. I think, for example, the Kubrick remasters and Superman set later this year are being done with HD in mind, so those transfers should be spectacular.

and for it being an 'older' movie - it makes the new films look like shit... ;)

darkside 06-19-06 01:43 PM

Blazing Saddles is one of my favorites so far. It shows how good old movies can look as much as Full Metal Jacket shows how bad old movies can look. I skipped Fugitive after reading the review here and will probably skip Lethal Weapon as well.

It just befuddles me, that Warners would release these titles and these transfers so early on... from what I've been told the HDNet Movie HiDef edition of The Road Warrior is amazing... why not just release films that look great and not just any back catalogue title that could benefit from more time of a new HD transfer?

digitalfreaknyc 06-19-06 02:46 PM

Here's my question: why hasn't anyone questioned WB about this? Someone should seriously bring them to task.

I agree. They have a huge catalog to pull from so they can easily skip over material that needs to be remastered for HD DVD.

Supermallet 06-19-06 08:52 PM

Was Unforgiven a new transfer? Because I heard good things about that one.

Adam Tyner 06-19-06 08:53 PM

It doesn't have the same sparkle as some of the really new transfers, but Unforgiven still looks awfully nice.

Universal Studios Home Video have announced their HD-DVD plans for September 2006.

The first wave arrives on 12th September and includes Red Dragon, Seabiscuit and Traffic priced at $29.98 SRP each. These all offer 1080P Widescreen transfers with English, French and Spanish Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 audio, with the exception of Traffic which only includes English (5.1 and 2.0 DDP) audio.

The second wave also priced at $29.98 SRP each arrives a week later on 19th September and includes End of Days and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. In this case both titles offer 1080P Widescreen transfers and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio mixes, alongside English, French and Spanish Dolby Digital Plus offerings.

Also arriving on the 19th are HD-DVD / DVD Combo format versions of Dazed and Confused and George A. Romero’s Land of the Dead. Priced at $34.98 SRP each the DVD sides should match the existing releases, while firm details on the HD sides are TBC.

English SDH, French and Spanish subtitles are optional on all titles while extras should match the existing Universal DVD editions.
