Right. I believe he has a reliable source feeding him this information, but I wouldn't stake my life on it panning out that way. I'm hopeful, though.

Don't know where the article is, but someone in one of the hd threads posted it regarding King Kong. It mentioned that Universal was going to release it during the Summer. I think it featured one of their execs and had a picture of the HD demo. So I'd say the August release is legit.

Mr. Cinema 06-20-06 04:55 PM

I know we've discussed earlier about that list of HD DVD titles that Microsoft used to have on their site. This is from dvd file, which kind of did a recap on what's been going on in HD land:

"There have also been reports that Microsoft's Windows Media website revealed several upcoming HD DVD titles sans release date: 12 Monkeys, 2 Fast 2 Furious, American Pie, Animal House, Army of Darkness, Battlestar Galactica Season 1 (new miniseries), Conan the Barbarian, Dante's Peak, Dazed and Confused, Dracula (Legosi), Dune (Lynch), and End of Days."

This may be old news, but what's interesting is some of those titles are recent announcements (Dazed and Confused, End of Days, and Animal House). I remember The Thing used to be on that list. Since a new transfer was done for the Collector's Edition that came out in '04, I'm sure it's very possible they have it ready. I wouldn't be surprised if The Thing and Army of Darkness are 2 October titles.

Universal just announced a bunch of titles for later this year and Kong wasn't in them. August seems pretty unlikely to me.

Supermallet 06-20-06 06:53 PM

Fear And Loathing and Dazed And Confused would be nice, but they won't have the Criterion extras (I'm assuming).

Edit: Shit, I just noticed 12 Monkeys and Army of Darkness. But if Army of Darkness is the theatrical cut, it is a big no sale.

Skoobooz 06-20-06 07:01 PM

Judging by the menus, it looks like at least Traffic certainly won't have the Criterion extras. It will have that "Inside Traffic" featurette from their original release.

Sigh...I'll be buying it for the transfer, but keeping the Criterion set for the extras. Damn.

Unless you're seeing something I'm not, they did the september releases. They've conveniently skipped the next month and a half. no?

They did already announce a bunch for August. Unleashed, Animal House, Ray, Bone Collector, Interpreter and Spy Game. Those only cover August 8th and 22nd, so more will hopefully come.

They've announced six titles for August -- Animal House, Ray, Unleashed, The Bone Collector, The Interpreter, and Spy Game. Maybe there's more in the pipeline for August, but it does seem kind of strange to announce a full slate for September if they're not finished with August. It seems strange to have only two titles for July, but then again, Universal only had two titles for the entire month of June too.

Grubert 06-21-06 07:27 AM

Universal have always announced in sequence. The only exception was with Animal House and Unleashed (August titles announced after some September titles), but that might be because they waited until they were sure they were going to be combo titles.

I'm scrambling to find a Batman Begins HD-DVD release date but I've got nothing. Anybody else have any info or websites that might at the very least give a ballpark release date?

Adam Tyner 06-21-06 11:43 AM

Warner hasn't announced release dates for anything past next Tuesday. If I were a betting man, I'd put huge stacks of money on the table that we'll see Batman Begins in July. (And probably the new Harry Potter flick too.)

Mr. Cinema 06-21-06 12:01 PM

I would also expect Troy, Terminator 3, and Shawshank Redemption. Those 2 have been advertised in their hd dvd inserts.

Mr. Cinema 06-21-06 01:03 PM

Not sure it's been mentioned here, but Digital Bits says to expect Poseidon HD DVD on 8/22...

I thought it was okay, but it should look and sound great.

Which company is that?

Yeah...i actually thought it was pretty good. Should be DEFINITELY one to test the system. I think this might be my "van helsing" purchase ;)

I didnt get to see it in the theaters....this is good news.

I think its WB.

Maxflier 06-21-06 01:12 PM

It is indeed WB.

Oliver Clothesoff 06-21-06 01:28 PM

Nice to see another day-date title. I hope this bodes well for V for Vendetta in August.

Mr. Cinema 06-21-06 01:42 PM

Paramount is supposedly dropping the dvd of MI3 on 9/29. Not sure if the HD DVD will arrive that day since they're mum on the subject.

the 35mm print I saw looked ugly as sin.

BravesMG 06-21-06 01:48 PM

It look absolutely outstanding on IMAX, I'm probably going to see it again tonight or tomorrow.

I bet it did, there were no IMAX showing of this in and around the Washington DC/metropolitan area... :(

When did you see it? Most chain theaters have no idea how to maintain a film print, so if you see a film long into its run, it will look bad.

Also, is anyone else worried about Warner and their catalogue titles (since someone mentioned The Shawshank Redemption)? I hope they don't use those 1080i old transfers anymore.

digitalfreaknyc 06-21-06 02:49 PM

Shawshank won't have a transfer like that. It was recently remastered. It will be a similar situation to Blazing Saddles.

Supermallet 06-21-06 02:58 PM

Okay, good to know. :)
