Oliver Twist (8/25)

Not sure if the specs at CDjapan are correct.

This has been mentioned several times already. The problem is that they're not using VC1 encoding and reviews haven't been favorable.

<Yeah but the BR Basic Instinct 2 is the R-rated version apparently.>

If Sony is releasing this one, we've probably got the first BR double-dip brewing already.

Rusty James 05-23-06 12:09 PM

I'm talking about the R-rated Basic Instinct 2 in the post above.

Releasing which one?

Giles 05-23-06 12:45 PM

in Sony's case I bet they'll continue the time old tradition of releasing both theatrical and unrated cuts as seperate releases - :brickwl2:

we still don't have any info whether or not these releases will be the theatrical or expanded cuts:

Resident Evil: Apocaylpse
A Knight's Tale
Saw
Crash

BTW, Amazon finally dropped the price of Unforgiven and Fugitive to $19.99, but sadly they want $21.99 for Blazing Saddles. However, with the extra 10% off I may buy all three.

Interesting:

Paramount has subsequently pulled all HD-DVD promotional material from their press website and is mum on any HD-DVD inquiries. The same with Fox and Blu-ray for that matter.

So as it stands, the June 20 release date for Paramount's first wave of 3 was at one time planned but as of now has not been officially announced. Paramount could still pull a Warner and issue a press release 5 days before street date. Time will tell.

Mr. Cinema 05-24-06 11:04 AM

Paramount is probably still stunned by Mission: Impossible III's underperforming at the box office that they forgot they were supporting HD DVD.

They should release it on HD-DVD on 6/20 then. Maybe that would boost both. ;)

I've read that Paramount will be going through some changeover regarding some of their execs. Not sure if this affects their home video division.

At least out of the 3 HD DVD studios, I do prefer Universal and Warners catalogs over Paramounts. And I'm eagerly awaiting that King Kong HD DVD announcement...

Amazon.com added The Aviator to their HD DVD list. Of course, there's no release date or pricing yet.

Paramount has a ton of stuff that I'd want. Fox is at the same level. Luckily, Sony/MGM has the very least. When I think of MGM, I think $7 DVD's. ;)

Just noticed that "16 Blocks" which comes out on June 13th has an HD DVD option at netflix, so I guess thats another same day dvd/hd release. I believe Kiss Kiss Bang Bang which comes out the same day is supposed to as well, but they don't have the HD DVD option for it yet.

Adam Tyner 05-25-06 07:58 AM

No dates attached, but Microsoft's website lists some upcoming HD DVD titles from Universal, including:

12 Monkeys
2 Fast 2 Furious
American Pie
Animal House
Army of Darkness
Backdraft
Battlestar Galactica (2004) Season 1
Conan the Barbarian
Dante's Peak
Dazed and Confused
Dracula (1931)
Dune (Theatrical)
End of Days

...and since those are listed alphabetically, obviously, that's just a partial selection. Not a bad set at all, and it's nice to see classics like Dracula on there.

Do Blockbuster stores have day/date HD-DVDs?

I didnt see Rumor Has It at my local store, but did anyone see it at one?

Nope. Stores aren't carrying them.

You can only get them online.

Bleh....If I were Toshiba, I would try and get blockbuster stores alot of software. Maybe when more day/date titles come out, they will do that.

Blockbuster is testing the waters with online. If enough people are renting them, they'll branch out.

I don't think it makes much sense for BB to invest themselves in a format that may fail, especially with their current situation.

I think The Thing is also part of that lineup. I remember seeing another list like that on another site. Can't wait for that one, in addition to what's been listed above.

It's possible the Dracula HD DVD will arrive day and date with their upcoming 75th anniversary version, which I believe is due in September....along with Frankenstein.

Blockbuster should be doing anything they can to get people in the stores....they are in trouble right now.

Netflix is renting HD movies as well. BB doing it wouldn't be any different. That's their main competition.

And in regards to the list above...i can't WAIT for Backdraft.
Pretty intense to go from a NON-ANAMORPHIC dvd to an HD source.

True....but Blockbuster stores are what is in trouble. Im just being feciciuos since I hate BBV and hope they die soon.

ChrisHicks 05-25-06 09:44 AM

I can't wait for a few of those titles.

I don't. I get my movies in the mail usually within 2 days. Plus 4 free rentals a month is great.

But this is for another thread.
