I've got a bone to pick with Adam:
How can you give the video for The Hulk 4 and a half stars? Looked like perfection to me.

Supermallet 01-22-07 12:49 PM

I've seen better PQ than Hulk.

The best PQ that I have seen so far from either format is King Kong.

Supermallet 01-22-07 01:22 PM

I'd have to go with Fearless and Batman Begins.

You're in for a treat! However, I must mention that it can be quite grainy at times, in the spotlighted numbers and dark scenes. I believe that's due to the original photography (having to push the film stock to extract detail). Nevertheless, it looks sharp and detailed. I didn't see any compression or other problems, but I have only just skimmed around the disc.

I like how it has many extras from the SE DVD, in a section called "Original DVD Features." I don't know what, if anything is missing from the SE since I passed on that one.

"Only a few negligible concerns keep it from landing a perfect score. Not that this is the fault of the transfer, but the battle with the mutant mutts is excessively dark, presumably to help obscure some of the computer-generated effects. A small number of scattered shots have a slightly soft tinge to them, and some ringing around high-contrast edges were infrequently spotted. I may not think much of the movie, but Hulk's presentation on HD DVD comes dangerously close to perfection."

I don't know if the difference between 4.5 stars and 5 stars really requires picking a bone, though. :)

The Collectors Series rating was eventually removed from that review, FWIW.

I also reread my post and didn't meant to sound judgmental if it came off that way. I don't remember whose review the Golden Girls was, and I meant no offense, it was just a general statement regarding holding the Collectors Series rating in high regard. I think all of the reviewers on DVD Talk do an outstanding job, I just happen to read more of the HD/BD reviews lately. I haven't seen a better site for such encompassing reviews anywhere, and given the quality of the reviews here, I have no need to look .

Slightly off topic, but I was browsing reviews last night and the single-disc, featureless version of Lawrence of Arabia still has the Collector Series rating. I've never figured that one out.

Finished Chicago today. As has been previously stated, it looks as it did in theaters. Grainy in low light scenes (the performances, especially), vibrant colors. Sharpness is good during brightly lit scenes, but appropriately hindered in darkness. There are some scenes that are pretty amazing (I was impressed by the falling sequins during one of Richard Gere's numbers; We Both Reached For The Gun looks great). It's AVC encoded and sounds great, too. It seems as though everything was carried over from the 2-disc edition, but I can't recall exactly. Great disc.

I didn't have time to watch it all, but I did check out the "Movie Showcase" scenes, & I agree, what I saw looks & sounds stunning!

I know this one is old hat, but I just saw the Ant Bully last night on my A2. Unreal PQ. Easily a 5/5. Totally 3d, colors are perfect, beautiful transfer. I would use this to demo HD-DVD quality.

And it also has Dolby TruHD so you can demo audio as well.

Is the movie any good?

Not all the extras have been ported over, but I agree: This is a great disc. The very last scene (with Zelwegger and Zeta-Jones dancing in front of the wall of light bulbs) looks incredible.

Tsk tsk. ;)

*ahem*

In other news, I skipped around Black Rain last night and, having never seen it in the movies, this is the best the film has looked on any format...ever. And the sound is MUCH better than the old DVD release as well. Top notch for those who love the movie!

Could have been better, but had its moments. Pretty much just an animated Honey I Shrunk the Kids. I'd say 3/5. A good rental.

I'm watching Meet The Parents to review. This is like sticking red hot pokers in my eyes. What an awful movie.

If you think that's bad, wait for Meet the Fockers.

Funny thing but I found Fockers to be a bit more entertaining than the 1st. The 1st's biggest fault is how everyone treats Gaylord like an asshole simply because he's a nurse. WTF?

The second has a few funny jokes (most added from Dustin Hoffman and De Niro interacting).

digitalfreaknyc 01-31-07 08:44 AM

Huh. Go figure. I liked them both. :)

Ditto...though I liked the first one better.

Thankfully I don't think I have to review that one.

Edit: Then again, it hasn't been assigned yet.

That's because it hasn't been announced yet ;)
