There's a FAQ in this forum.

aj109 02-01-07 06:30 PM

Will it be the next beta max dinasour?

Supermallet 02-01-07 06:31 PM

Read the FAQ. This is the wrong thread.

If anyone knew for sure, this format war would already be over.

Thanks, braves. I do hope Arpeggi's comment was some kind of attempt at humor.

Me too. I have respect for DVD Reviewers, who despite not liking a particular movie, still can judge the PQ/AQ/Extra's without being biased. Keep up the good work, Suprmallet!

Arpeggi 02-02-07 09:55 AM

Suprmallet's reviews are obviously all amazing to read and saying only a few of them are good is lying. Obviously.

The PQ isn't awful, there's a hell of a lot of detail on the disc, but the colors do seem muted except for skin tones, which have an odd pushed tone to them. If you read my reviews, you'll see I have no problem giving high PQ/AQ marks to movies I personally dislike. I'm just calling it like I see it.

Again, you need to verify that your display has been properly calibrated. And I asked for your equipment, not some generic description of it. For example, if you are using a 1080p Bravia, that might explain the reason for color push, as I've seen that with all of them.

Your "comedic" response to my post coupled with your refusal to answer even basic questions which should be required of all reviewers does make me question the accuracy of your ratings. There's no need to be defensive, nor is this a personal attack, but if you are going to review and want those reviews to be taken at face value, then you should supply the required information.

Supermallet 02-02-07 02:39 PM

It is a Sony Bravia which I've calibrated myself. Did I pay someone $500 to get into the service menu? No. However, none of the other HD DVDs or BD's I've watched exhibit red push on skin tones, which tells me that it's a disc issue.

And the reason I was so defensive is I seem to remember you making a post about how Josh shouldn't be reviewing because he's watching on a 720p display. If that wasn't you, I apologize. I just figured anyone who makes that comment about Josh is going to find some way to fault any review he doesn't agree with.

I'll accept your apology then, because, as others can attest to, that doesn't even sound like me. Especially not to Zyber, who I've never had a cross word with in the seven years I've been here and hold in high regard. If you can show me the post, I'll gladly retract the above (although I still like Zyber :D either way).

As to the first part, as a reviewer, I'm surprised by your negative attitude towards calibration. It makes a world of difference (and it not $500 either). I'm also surprised you got out the red and green push from your Bravia, but will take you at your word. There seems to be some discrepancy with your PQ description, but reasonable minds will differ.

Supermallet 02-03-07 05:43 AM

I'm not down on calibration, I'm down on the idea that the only way to get good PQ is through calibration. As for the push, well, as I said, MTP is the only disc I've seen so far that exhibits it.

I watched MTP today. Fleshtones looked accurate on my set. Overall, decent picture quality. A step up from the standard DVD (which I own also), but definately not reference quality.

Caddyshack HD DVD gets my vote for most improved picture quality compared to the standard DVD. A few scenes looked grainy, but otherwise, it looked great.

As for Meet the Parents, I watched it yesterday and it looked good overall. The flesh tones occasionally looked a little pink, but the outdoor fall scenes looked very good.

Supermallet 02-04-07 11:49 PM

Just reviewed Chicago. Excellent disc.

Adam Tyner 02-05-07 08:49 AM

The good news (I guess): I just posted my 75th HD DVD review.
The bad: it was for a Barry Manilow concert. Aargh.

Supermallet 02-05-07 09:21 AM

Adam Tyner 02-05-07 01:37 PM

Wow, and I just noticed that we've broken the 150 review mark for HD DVD.

Supermallet 02-05-07 09:15 PM

And it was Manilow that brought us there. *tear*
