Well, circumstances changed, and I'm going to end up paying more for rent than I originally thought. I'll be using my parents' TV until I can get mine down south.

What's the general consensus on the extra money required to go 1080p at the moment? Worth it or not? I'm looking for a $2000 or under 40" or 42" and I'm finding some REALLY nice looking name brand sets that are only 720p/1080i for about $1300-$1500 range. Comparable sets with 1080p tend to cost an extra Cleveland.

Any "can't miss" Black Friday HDTV deals that we should know about?

Best Buy will have a 42" Westinghouse LCD (720p) for $999, 32" for $499.

Circuit City will have a 32" Olevia LCD for $499.

Wal*Mart will have a 32" LCD for $598 and a 42" Plasma for $988 (not sure of brands).

Can't miss..? Well.. that's subjective.

Okay, so, my TV needs changed from the last time I posted in this thread. Instead of a large-size projection TV, I ended up needing a mid-size flat screen for wall mounting in a bedroom. Plasmas were too expensive, especially for 1080p, so I went with the Sony Bravia KDL-40V2500 40" 1080p LCD. I got a great deal on it (about $1,000 off MSRP), and so far it's been great. I haven't plugged in my A1 or PS3 yet, but Gears of War on the 360 looked absolutely freakin' phenomenal. In just a bit I will be hooking up the HD players and will pop in Batman Begins and The Descent (among others) to see how they look.

I've spent the whole day with this TV and I've come to the conclusion that it's fucking awesome. I've watched Batman Begins, Clerks II, Forbidden Planet, Talladega Nights, The Descent and Fearless. I also tried out Kingdom of Heaven on regular DVD, played Gears of War on the Xbox 360, and Resistance: Fall of Man on the PS3. When I initally opened the box, the PQ looked like total crap, but after some overhauling of the settings, I got an excellent picture that stood up very well to higher end TVs. I'm realy happy with this purchase, and highly recommend the TV.

Congrats on the purchase. I have had this TV for over two months and I agree, it is great. I think the picture looks best on the vivid setting.

I set all of those optional settings to neutral or off and then messed with the individual options directly.

That's funny, because on my Sony SXRD, the vivid setting looks really bad, everything pumped up and very artificial. I did the same thing as Suprmallet, turned everything to neutral or off (in the custom setting) and then tweaked away. It looks much better than it did out of the box.

Not only was the initial setting on Vivid (which, unfortunately, did not make everyone appear nude), but the color temp was set to "Warm2," which made everyone look like they were appearing inside of an oven. I can't even figure out why a setting like that exists.

Yeah, mine was on Warm 2 as well. I don't understand those settings either (and not only one but two "warm" settings). The colour looks so unnatural on anything other than "Neutral", so I don't know who would want everything to look orangey red.

I guess those are there for people who find the individual picture settings to be too intimidating. But even then, Warm2 is way over the top.

I'd like to get some opinions on the Sharp Aquos 32". I've finally decided to replace my 27" tube TV and the Aquos has some great reviews. I don't care about 1080p at this point, and this TV has a nice selection of inputs. It'd be used for standard def TV, DVDs, and gaming (Wii and PS2). Of course I'll get HD programming if I buy it.

I guess my biggest concern is standard def TV; I've heard it can look really bad on HDTVs.

I was interested in getting people's opinions on the Samsung 50" 5087 1080p DLP. It seems like the most bang for my buck right now (can't really go higher), and Finding Nemo looked great on it at the store. I am worried about the rainbow effect, but all else aside, think this may be the one for me. Has anyone else had experience with it? And, is President's Day a time when this may be on sale? its 1400 right now at amazon.

I'm about to enter the market for my first HDTV, and as a very basic decision, I'm just trying to decide which size should work. I currently have a 25 inch one that works pretty well for my one-bedroom apartment (living room being about 15 x 10 feet) and I probably plan on living in that size for a couple more years.

I'm mainly looking at 32 and 37 inches, but have no idea how they'd translate to my room. Anyone have experience with this room/tv size.

I'm seeking a somewhat lower end model ($800 is probably my upper limit) and was wondering how that should factor in in 720p vs. 1080i vs. 1080p.

Actually, when you get everything else dialed in right, Warm 2 is the preferred setting, at least in a lot of the tweak posts I've read over at AVS.

CNET posted the settings that they found to be ideal for the Sony SXRDs. It was for the 60 inch model, but works well on my 50-inch SXRD. You can read them here.

The only alteration I made was to bump the color up a bit, to 45. But after trying many other tweaks, I have found the settings above to be just about dead on.

You might find this chart helpful in deciding on screen size, viewing distance and screen resolution:
