This isn't a "double dip" which indicates a studio going back and releasing the same thing with a different package. This is a new, better version of the film based on better elements.

It would've been nicer if Sony had used those elements to begin with but this second release is out of necessity due to earlier incompetence, not due to greediness.

I'm not sure I understand your reasoning above, but if they're re-releasing the film in a better version and not considering the first one 'defective' and allowing a direct trade in, then it seems like the textbook definition of double-dip.

I had a feeling they wouldn't be waiting too long. And that film assets excuse is so bogus. The DVD they just released was in near pristine shape and I'm sure that they could have gotten the master from that.

Actually, next-gen DVD is HD DVD. BD isn't DVD. So this has zero bearing on HD DVD.

You'd think they would have mastered in HD in the first place. I suppose all the DVD double-dips were from the original DVD master, which did predate HD, unfortunately.

Technically speaking, he's right. BD is NOT the official successor to DVD. HD-DVD is officially endorsed.

This is one of my other reasons to wait on jumping to the high def bandwagon because I know some of the studios will pull shit like this especially Sony who has practically turned multi-dipping into an art.

Well, to be completely honest, we don't actually know that, at least not yet. If Sony offers a free trade-in/replacement for existing owners of the (now acknowledged as defective) BD, then I will be much more inclined to agree with your statement. But if they don't, then I'm not so sure.
