Sony plans first HD double dip on TFE

According to Sound and Vision, Sony is planning a double dip on TFE:

On top of that, parts of some discs had been transferred from less than pristine film assets, exhibiting the kind of dirt and scratches seen in a worn print. Sony has now committed to rereleasing The Fifth Element for just this reason.

This isn't a "double dip" which indicates a studio going back and releasing the same thing with a different package. This is a new, better version of the film based on better elements.

It would've been nicer if Sony had used those elements to begin with but this second release is out of necessity due to earlier incompetence, not due to greediness.

Thts good. The disc came out 2 months ago and they already plan on a new better release. Let me guess...they won't be replacing anyones who already purchased the shitty version, right?

If they're still going to use MPEG-2 on this one, there may be a demand for a triple dip.

Unless they are planning to reissue to those who purchased the first one, I consider this a double dip.

Unless they issue a recall or disc exchange program then I'd call it a double dip.

But I understand what your point is.

EDIT: Rock beat me to it...

If you lookup the word greedy in the dictionary, it says "see Sony"

I'll ask the obvious, why the hell didn't they do it right the first time? A double dip this early in the format...

I wonder how long it will take before Sony debuts Superbit titles on Blu-Ray. Bluperbits.

I'm not sure I understand your reasoning above, but if they're re-releasing the film in a better version and not considering the first one 'defective' and allowing a direct trade in, then it seems like the textbook definition of double-dip.

I had a feeling they wouldn't be waiting too long. And that film assets excuse is so bogus. The DVD they just released was in near pristine shape and I'm sure that they could have gotten the master from that.

Shit like this really makes me hate Sony.

It's a double dip unless they pull all remaining copies and replace them with the new ones, and offer an exchange program for anyone who purchased the original version. Unless all those things happen, it's a double dip.

You're mistaken.
Actually, next-gen DVD is HD DVD. BD isn't DVD. So this has zero bearing on HD DVD.

You'd think they would have mastered in HD in the first place. I suppose all the DVD double-dips were from the original DVD master, which did predate HD, unfortunately.

If there is no replacement program, it is a double dip. In this case it would be a quintuple (IINM) dip.

Technically speaking, he's right. BD is NOT the official successor to DVD. HD-DVD is officially endorsed.

All that aside, one bad disc with a double dip is hardly a reason to "avoid HD for a year."

Right. We all knew what was intended, though, and let's not start attacking each other over semantics.

It'll wind up being a triple dip.

The second one will have a better picture (w/o the scratches, etc.).

The third will include that plus any extras they leave off b/c of space issues. This is assuming BD50.

we do? I'd love to know.

I didn't even get his comment other than it being typical Spiky bullshit.

That's exactly what I thought. I wonder if the latest DVD edition said mastered in High Def like some of their other titles. Anyone have a copy and can comment?

This is one of my other reasons to wait on jumping to the high def bandwagon because I know some of the studios will pull shit like this especially Sony who has practically turned multi-dipping into an art.

Well, to be completely honest, we don't actually know that, at least not yet. If Sony offers a free trade-in/replacement for existing owners of the (now acknowledged as defective) BD, then I will be much more inclined to agree with your statement. But if they don't, then I'm not so sure.
