Double Dipping?
I'm so conflicted. I said I would never double dip, but now I'm being very tempted to do so. However, the return value on used DVDs is minimal. What are you guys doing about this?
|
All but 1 of my HD purchases have been double dips. Ebay or DVD Planet. If you can get $5 for it and you're paying $20 on ebay, I'm ok with $15 a movie. That was my threshold for SD DVD.
|
I've given in on double dipping. I have already double dipped on 7 titles including preorders and that will probably be the norm. However, I do get a bit of cash selling the DVD version and with titles under $20 with discounts these haven't been too painful of double dips.
The problem is I already own most of the movies I want so many titles I will want on HD DVD will have to be double dips. |
Right now I'm giving titles a lot of leeway just because the selection is limited. There's some titles I won't double-dip on. The best example is Fulci's The Black Cat which I have not seen since I purchased it about 5 years ago. (I'm sort of blinded to it and it doesn't register as a movie I haven't seen when I scan the shelf).
Some, I will double-dip on. I have no problem buying The Lord of the Rings all over again. And until there's HD-DVDs everywhere (on my bedroom set, at the home of friends and family) I will still need the original DVDs. Some DVDs I plan on not ever selling, even if they are inferior (OOP version of The Vanishing for example)... |
Re: Double Dipping?
sorry to bump this old topic but I did search :p
Anyways, I posted something about studios "double dipping" on titles and got chastised because David Lambert felt it was offensive. The subject is Roseanne, The are re-releasing Season 1 and 2 with unedited versions and they dont consider these double dips. TVShowsOnDVD.com wrote: "Jeremy, how is it a "tricky" double dip of the type you describe, when the studio releasing the new (better) product is a completely different one than the studio that released the (inferior) version 6 years ago? Please don't come here and insult our readers, or anything else. Comments of any sort of insulting nature will be deleted, and the person who posted them banned from our Facebook fan page. Please see our "common-sense posting guidelines" in the Notes tab of this fan page: http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=146810552732" "Why didnt I get the best version to begin with?" Anyways I think peoples opinions are valuable for studios and even merchants you process these decisions. I wont be buying it! I just had to double dip on Lord of the Rings :( |

Here's some threads you could've resurrected. Either about double-dipping: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/33...ng-titles.html http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/54...few-years.html http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/55...-dip-ever.html http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/56...le-dipped.html Or about Roseanne: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/41...oming-dvd.html http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/43...-episodes.html http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/42...ember-6th.html Personally, I agree that it's not a "tricky" double dip, since they're trying to correct a mistake made by another studio. |
Re: Double Dipping?
I keep them both, I will take the DVDs with the family on Vacation (or Wherever we go), BRs stay at home.
Most of my Double Dip BRs I have got at a great price. -Spiderman Tril $19.99 ($6.66 a movie) -BttF Tril $14.99 (less than $5 a movie) -Lots for $9.99 or less So, I do not want to take the time to sell the DVDs, just keep them for other uses. |
Re: Double Dipping?
The OP never posted again :)

Re: Double Dipping?
let us remind some people that it's not a DD if you're getting a movie on BD for the first time..that's an upgrade.

Re: Double Dipping?
Let us also remind some people that spraying Febreeze on the crotch and ass of your jeans is not "doing laundry".
|
Re: Double Dipping?
As much as I would love to upgrade all my movies, I'm still only doing a few. I think the reason is that I can't justify the cost :(

Re: Double Dipping?
I've double dipped on:
>Adventureland >Dance Flick >Don't Be A Menace >Final Destination >Final Destination, The >Hot Rod >House Bunny >Just Friends (Canadian) >Labor Pains >Messengers, The >My Boss's Daughter (Double Feature w/ Duplex) >Observe & Report >The Runaways >Scream >Scream 3 >Scary Movie >Scary Movie 2 (French) >Scary Movie 4: Unrated >Waiting... Unrated I sometimes sell the DVDs. |
Re: Double Dipping?
And, five years later, I still haven't seen Fulci's The Black Cat.
Farthest I got I believe is the menu screen. |

Re: Double Dipping?
I think Avatar might be the only BD I dd'd on. Funny thing is I never watched the first release, but still bought the SE.

Re: Double Dipping?
Unless there is a massive reason to upgrade (DVD was not 16x9, or Blu has a different cut of the movie), I'm simply not upgrading. Most DVDs are good enough. A lot of people can see the difference, and sometimes even I can, but it's not enough to bother with upgrading.
As for the low resale price of DVDs, well, them's the breaks. I recently sold a bunch to the local used place and got less than $2 a piece, but I was simply glad to have them out of my house and I had a little spending cash. It's low resale prices that keep the prices of the used discs I like to buy down at a low price also. |
