Coordinated HD DVD purchase
#26
I will post on the AVS page a little later tonight what I plan to buy, but it probably won't be more than 2-4 titles.
I just gave two weeks notice at my job so I'm going to watch how much I spend until I get into another one.

Very good response so far.
There have been 151 people committing to buy ~614 HD DVDs on 8/8/06. Approximate because I counted 10+ titles in the poll as 10.
Anyway that's pretty impressive. One guy is going to buy 12 titles and his dad is going to by an HD-A1 and 20 titles on 8/8. That's 32 titles!
HD DVD obviously sells itself which is good news for the format.
As of today no one has started a similar Blu-ray coordinated purchase, although it has already been suggested that we make a similar push around 11/17 for the day the PS3 launches (which we will). Great support out there for HD DVD.

I'm not registered on AVS as of yet but you can put me down for four titles. I'll most likely be picking up Aeon Flux, the Italian Job, the Rundown, and Sahara.

I am waiting on points on my continental account to purchase my player, and since it looks like it will be the 8th or later when it ships, I will proably buy 3 or maybe 4 on the 8th. Is it ok to buy from amazon or is this a B&M show of support?

Well, my birthday is coming up this week. Since I'll be getting mostly cash, I may get in on this, even though it's likely that I won't have a player for a few months. I don't want to buy more than 3 or 4 since I can't watch them for a while.
The titles I want out of what is or will be released so far are:
The Phantom of the Opera
Goodfellas
Cinderella Man
Apollo 13
Million Dollar Baby
Unforgiven
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
U2: Rattle and Hum
Blazing Saddles (I'd rather wait on this one a bit, because I just got the SD DVD a month ago)
Without introducing your personal biases into the choices, what 3-4 of those titles should I get? Are there any sales to take advantage of? I realize that most of those aren't reference quality "wow" titles, but the days of buying movies just for that factor are over for me. That said, I would like to get at least one title that can show off HD impressively.

I'll be (pre)ordering a lot of HD-dvd titles on AVS purchase day. I havn't compiled a list yet of how many titles but I'd like to get everything I don't have yet. I'll have to update on avs this week!
Since I resigned from my job and will be out of work for a few months all of my future purchases after 8/8 will probably be via dvdplanet's trade in system. I figure that is a good way to get a lot of HD releases while clearing out the old stuff.

Phantom of the Opera is very highly reviewed and definitely among the most detailed of all the discs I've seen but I don't really like it and wouldn't buy it for myself. Since you listed it as a "want", I'd pick that one since it definitely has the "wow" factor.
I'd also put Unforgiven near the top of the PQ list. I was constantly amazed by the PQ on that one. Also Blazing Saddles is so good it looks like it was made this year...

Okay, I'll be buying Phantom (sorry, Josh Z
) and Unforgiven for sure. Unforgiven is the only one I listed that I don't have the DVD edition of, so that's a good reason to go with that one. I don't think I'll get Cinderella Man just yet because it's a little more expensive. R&H and Sky Captain can wait since they're not that big of an upgrade.

I am probably going to just walk into a Best Buy and get Aeon Flux and Constantine. I am hoping Aeon Flux still makes it to the stores on the 8th. I might also order 3 from amazon so I can start getting 10% off.

Well, a Gamestop near me had some guy trade in a bunch of HD DVDs and BDs, and they're $12.99 each. I get 25% off these (employee discount plus discount card), so I couldn't resist picking up U-571 and Van Helsing, even though two of these were going to be part of my HD DVD Purchase Day purchase. I'm sure I'll find some stuff I want though. I keep finding more and more that looks interesting.
Except Doom, that is. They had that one for $12.99 and I still couldn't justify picking it up, even with the great PQ.

If CC puts their shit out on time, I should be out the door tomorrow with 4 HD-DVDs.

Even though I bought some of the HD DVDs I said I would get (Van Helsing and U-571), I saw a trailer for Jarhead (thanks digi) in HD and it made me want to pick it up. I decided to skip Apollo 13 because, eh, I've seen it enough. But I'm sure I can find some other stuff worth picking up.

Went all over the place looking for Aeon Flux this morning and no luck. I know, I only hit WalMart but that was all that was open when I got off work. I did pick up Jarhead though and I will go over and place a supplemental Amazon order.
