I'm wondering if the Linux box A1 and XA1 were just a temporary fix until Toshiba can start mass producing these things with custom components. I won't be surprised if Toshiba announces another line of players soon to replace the A1 and XA1. I bet they have much faster load times and 1080p. I have a feeling the A1 and XA1 won't be the players Toshiba uses for their real launch in September.

From EETimes.com:
Toshiba plans to introduce a new player model before the year-end sales season to boost the sales.

But does that mean Japan-only? Or will it be here too? That's pretty damn impressive. HD DVD will be on its second gen and BD will be on its first.

I'd love to pick me up one of those recorders. Wonder if Bill Hunt will report on that.

Apparently the new player is really more of a "1.5" than a "2.0", but since it's a similar architecture and Toshiba has confirmed that this new player will be firmware-upgradable to handle 5.1 TrueHD decoding, that should bode well for the HD-A1 being able to do the same.

Are the chances high that the 2nd gen Toshiba will output 1080p?
As much as I love my HD-A1, I'll likely get this one too. And the 360 add-on. I can't stop...never hurts to have backups.

I have noticed lately that my A1 does not play some of my DVD+Rs very well. This is on Verbatim discs created with a plextor dvd-writer on 1X writing!!
They skip around and sometimes never load. So, I just throw them in my 360 and they play fine....the pq is just lacking. Bleh.
I hope a future firmware update will fix this.

Does anyone know why the HD-A1 can only output 1080i? I saw the HD DVD demonstration when they came through a couple weeks before it debuted and I was sort of surprised the guys hosting it seemd out of the loop. Their response was that HDMI was incapable of 1080p at the time. But the Samsung has the same HDMI port and it handles 1080p fine.

If it can do that, is it possible it could then be upgraded to 1080p at some point?

1080p is being debated via firmware. I don't think we've gotten a direct answer.

What purplexes me, is just that they play fine on my 360 and my brothers Oppo....im just hoping that its something they fix via firmware.
