The majority of HD DVDs released so far are dual-layer, but the players and software can deliver a seamless layer change (on HD DVDs but not necessarily regular DVDs).

There are plenty of standard DVD players with digital frame buffers that will also deliver seamless layer changes.

I believe BR already has those 8 layer discs ready in the lab. Should be here by November just in time for the Sony BD decks and the PS3.

I believe this is true, too.

I think the glitches I had seen were triggered at a layer change. In general there is NO pause at the layer change on the HD-A1 (that can vary from player to player, I'm sure, just like regular SD DVD players). Something would happen and the audio/video would become out of sync. If you paused the player for a second and then hit play they would be synched again.

Anyway, I watched Doom last night and it had a slight pause at one point... right about the time you would expect a layer change so I figured that's what it was. But, usually, there is no pause anywhere during the movie...

All of the DVD/HD DVD combo discs are single layer on each side.

There is an Amazon seller listing the Toshiba player for $416.90, but he only has 80% positive ratings. Amazon usually has better purchase protection than Ebay, but I'm still a little wary. On the flipside, there is a seller with 96% positive ratings selling it for $448.88. I'm strongly considering getting that one. I have a $25 gift certificate, plus with free shipping and 10% off the discs, I can get the Toshiba and three movies for $496.90.

Ah, screw it, I'm just gonna go for it.

wewantflair 06-23-06 10:36 PM

How about this: Buy.com has it for 462.99. If you sign up for their credit card, you get 2 separate $15 credits, plus 6 months no interest. The player comes to 447.99 shipped and tax free, plus 15 off the next movie.

I ordered mine today.

Supermallet 06-23-06 10:39 PM

The last thing I need is another credit card. I actually just used my Amazon credit card to order this player, so I should be getting another $25 gift certificate from them for this purchase.

Mr. Cinema 06-23-06 10:52 PM

Now you gotta get some movies to go with it.

Supermallet 06-23-06 10:54 PM

I did. I ordered Goodfellas, Unforgiven, and Chronicles of Riddick in the same order. So it was the player plus three movies for $496.90.

Mr. Cinema 06-23-06 11:06 PM

3 good choices. All 3 have solid picture, imo.

You should now get 10% off any HD purchase for a year. That comes in handy.

Supermallet 06-23-06 11:10 PM

Yes, I got 10% off all of those and I'm already eyeing some other movies. I'm definitely pre-ordering Pitch Black, and will get Million Dollar Baby to go with it.

I keep seeing HD discs used cheap from amazon sellers, but after shipping they end up being more than a new disc with the 10% discount.

wewantflair 06-23-06 11:11 PM

I ordered Doom, Phantom of the Opera, Serenity, Goodfellas, Cinderella Man, Blazing Saddles, Jarhead, Unforgiven, Training Day, Million Dollar Baby, Last Samurai, and Full Metal Jacket, and pre-ordered Friday Night Lights, Animal House, and Ray.

I figured I'd dive in head first...now awaiting shipment of my player!

Supermallet 06-23-06 11:17 PM

How much did all those movies cost you? That sure is a hell of a lot. :lol:

wewantflair 06-23-06 11:24 PM

I got a bunch off DDD 20%, some from amazon marketplace at under 15 each, and the pre-orders from amazon. Maybe 240 for the whole lot?

Supermallet 06-23-06 11:32 PM

I was just mentioning above that it seemed like most of the Amazon marketplace ones still came out to the same price or over the Amazon price after you took off the 10% and free shipping for the Amazon ones.

wewantflair 06-23-06 11:32 PM

You have to be on the hunt...many sellers price them at 13.xx to move, and with 2.49 each for shipping, this is less than Amazon's price even with the discount.

Supermallet 06-23-06 11:34 PM

If it's $2.49 for shipping, then yes, that is a good deal. I will keep my eyes open. Thanks!

According to the Samsung user manual the BDP-1000 supports the following listed below, but does anyone know what all the Toshiba supports on each output? I've looked through their online manuals but haven't found the answer to this question.

Code:

<table border=1 cellpadding=2 cellspacing=1>
 <tr>
  <td width=121>Discs</td>
  <td width=140>HDMI mode (HDMI output)</td>
  <td width=134>Component mode (Component output)</td>
  <td width=148>Video mode (S-Video, Video output)</td>
 </tr>
 <tr>
  <td width=121>Blu-ray Disc</td>
  <td width=140>1080p, 1080i, 720p</td>
  <td width=134>1080i, 720p</td>
  <td width=148>No picture</td>
 </tr>
 <tr>
  <td width=121>Blu-ray Disc with ICT (Image Constraint Token)</td>
  <td width=140>1080p, 1080i, 720p</td>
  <td width=134>No picture</td>
  <td width=148>No picture</td>
 </tr>
 <tr>
  <td width=121>Blu-ray Disc with DOT(Digital Only Token)</td>
  <td width=140>1080p, 1080i, 720p</td>
  <td width=134>No picture</td>
  <td width=148>No picture</td>
 </tr>
 <tr>
  <td width=121>DVD</td>
  <td width=140>1080p, 1080i, 720p, 480p</td>
  <td width=134>480p, 480i</td>
  <td width=148>480i</td>
 </tr>
</table>

I'll tell you right now that it will be "No Picture" for HDMI, DVI, Component and S-Video on all of those Blu-ray sources. ;)

Well, you're suppose to substitue HD-DVD instead for the Toshiba. ;)

Supermallet 06-24-06 12:15 AM

Right now the player only goes up to 1080i, but it will do that on component and HDMI for any non-ICT HD-DVD. SD-DVDs will only be upconverted over HDMI.

So I take if the HD-DVDs are ICT then you have to use HDMI otherwise no picture? Are all of the titles currently non-ICT or are they mixed?

Supermallet 06-24-06 12:50 AM

The way ICT is meant to work is that an HD-DVD or Blu-ray disc will not output more than 540p over component. I don't know why the Samsung won't display any picture at all. Similarly, I don't know how the Toshiba handles ICT discs.

To date, AFAIK, none of the released HD-DVDs or Blu-ray discs have ICT enabled. What I've heard is that most studios agreed to hold off on ICT for about a year.

Supermallet 06-24-06 01:09 AM

By the way, I'm still waiting for digitalfreak to formally congratulate me. I won't feel like a true HD-DVD owner without it. ;)
