Blu Ray DVD Covers revealed...

If they insist on different cases, i wish they would have made them a little taller instead of shorter with the exact same size coverart as regular DVD. That way all of us who think their new packages suck major ass could just take out the disc and coverart and put them in a standard amaray.

I agree that the case ought to look different to avoid confusion, but I'm not convinced the shape has to be different. Do people buy video games thinking they are DVD movies?
I'm considering finally getting into custom cases because of these. The difference with my cases is that I may leave off banners and logos (other than maybe the studio logos that I don't expect to change), so I can use the same case with a current DVD and the eventual upgrade to an HD disc. The specs and info on features can go in custom inserts and in a database.

When I saw the Blu-ray and HD-DVD cases, the first thing I thought of were the 3D glasses you got in cereal boxes as a kid. If you were to hold one of each up to your eyes, you could probably decode secret mesages.
And, I'm not so sure two-disc sets will ever be needed again. I saw a photo at DigitalBits of the various available formats and they pointed out a triple layer, dual sided disc! That's alot of space.

From a Sony slideshow:
• Considerations
– Product Differentiation from DVD / Other Product Lines - Continued Feedback
– Slim, Sleek, & Next Generation
– Smaller is the High Tech Progression
– Costs to be the same as Current DVD Case, Including Assembly
• Dimensions
– Case Height: 6.75” (DVD: 7.5”)
– Case Depth: 11mm (DVD: 15mm)
– Corner Radius .25mm
– Branding Bar.63”
• Blu ray Logo
– Centered both Vertically and Horizontally within Branding Bar. Embossed to maximum
height without interfering with automated insertion of litho wrap or Top Spine Label.
Blue Pad/Laser Printed Ink.
• Case Options
– Super Clear – with a hint of Blue (is the current preferred choice)
– Slim Case can hold (2) Discs (including a 2mm insert)
– Explore shrink wrap alternatives to maximize litho artwork
• Security
– Outer Latch at Center of Opening Side (eliminates need for side security sticker) –
U.S.
– Double Wall Construction (Overlapping walls on top and bottom)
– Positive release hub (Button must be pushed to release disc)

I'd rather have a sticker I remove once than a latch I have to fuss with everytime I open a case.

Not me. I have way too many DVDs where that stupid sticker residue is all over the case, making it look horrible. That and spending 5 minutes fiddling with 3 stickers is a waste of time if I can just open a latch. I have a few DVDs with latches, and find it akward now, but I'll get used to it quickly enough and benefit from no sticker residue or having to fiddle with the package.
I say welcome!

Or do a lot of people think they've destroyed the case after this?

I leave my latches on the case, they don't bother me in the least so i would much prefer latches over fighting to get that damn sticker residue off.

Yeah, I don't mind the latches if they're the twist off ones like on some dvd cases.
The stickers are a pain, but if you cut along the center with a knife and peel from their, they come off much easier and leave less residue generally than if you just peel them off from the edges.

Maybe on the new ones I won't since they'll be on every one.

I like the latch idea. On some R1 Universal releases (Land of the Dead Unrated and Team America Unrated) they had two latches on the regular DVD case. It just makes it seem a lot more secure so you don't have to worry about the case opening and the discs falling out accidentally if you're carrying them around in a bag etc.
I really don't think the cases will stay like this for long (I'd give the HD-DVD case the edge at the moment but I'm not really keen on either). They'll soon resort back to digi-paks and 'special' packaging in order to make them physically more appealing to the eyes of consumers. The High Definition material on the discs might look better than SD-DVDs but they'll need to catch up pretty fast to make the packaging look more appealing.

In their defense, I only saw it once and of course I taught them not to do that. I've taught them to handle DVDs properly. They've never put a finger print on one, for example. I just figured I wouldn't take the chance especially since the latches are a security device-- I mean, you wouldn't leave the security stickers on.
What's funny is they are meticulous about handling my DVDs, but they lose the CD jewel cases for their CDs and let the CD get all scratched up-- go figure.

My children do not get so much as a fingerprint on discs, either. At least, after they are 4. (3 for my daughter, so much faster than us males) You want happiness? Check out the 5 year old who is allowed to touch DVDs when visiting adults are not! I should get the camera out next time.
I hate those tabs. I break them off, but may start replacing the cases since it is ugly with the gaps. I'd rather have the DVD-A jewel cases (like with CDs) and fight through normal breakage with the harder plastic.

I think the Blu-Ray cases are pretty sweet...they look cool and my favourite colour is blue, so anything blue is always good in my book... I'm glad they are only a bit shorter, as I'd hate to have them in cases similar to cd jewel cases....and am also glad they are a bit thinner, because I'm out of space as it is with my dvd collection...
