Blu-ray titles for 2006

This has been culled from press releases and reliable news articles:

Buena Vista
Initial titles:
Armageddon
The Brothers Grimm
Dark Water (USA remake)
Dinosaur
Everest (documentary narrated by Liam Neeson)
The Great Raid
Hero
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Kill Bill: Vol. 1
Ladder 49

Fox
Twenty initial titles, including:
Behind Enemy Lines
Fantastic Four
Kiss of the Dragon
Ice Age
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

They are also preparing two sci-fi titles to be announced later that will take advantage of the extra capacity of the 50GB dual-layer disc (Alien and Star Wars, maybe?).
Fox plans simultaneous releases of its films on BD and DVD as the format takes hold and household penetration grows.

Lionsgate
Initial titles:
The Devil's Rejects
Dune (mini-series)
Lord of War
The Punisher
Rambo: First Blood
Reservoir Dogs
Saw
See No Evil
Terminator 2: Judgment Day
Total Recall

Paramount
Initial titles:
Aeon Flux
Four Brothers
The Italian Job
Manchurian Candidate (remake)
Sahara
Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow
Sleepy Hollow
Tomb Raider
U2: Rattle and Hum
We Were Soldiers

Other titles in 2006:
Mission Impossible trilogy

Sony/MGM
Initial titles:
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Desperado
The Fifth Element (in multichannel uncompressed audio)
For a Few Dollars More
The Guns of Navarone
Hitch
House of Flying Daggers
A Knight's Tale
Kung Fu Hustle
The Last Waltz (in multichannel uncompressed audio)
Legends of the Fall
Resident Evil Apocalypse
Robocop
Sense and Sensibility
Species
Stealth
SWAT
XXX

Summer 2006:
Black Hawk Down (DL BR)
The Bridge on the River Kwai (DL BR)
Stargate Atlantis

Sony's strategy is to release new feature films on Blu-ray Disc day-and-date with DVD.
It will also deliver four catalog titles per month beginning this Summer, accelerating to 10 titles per month by the fourth quarter 2006.

Warner
Batman Begins
Charlie & The Chocolate Factory
Constantine
The Dukes of Hazzard
The Last Samurai
Lethal Weapon
The Matrix
Million Dollar Baby
Oceans 12
Swordfish
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines
Training Day
Troy
Twister
Unforgiven

I'll update this post later when Disney (and maybe even Universal) spill the beans.

--updated to complete Lionsgate list
--updated to include Warner list

The Fifth Element
Sleepy Hollow
Bram Stoker's Dracula

Warner/New Line/HBO will be disclosed this evening. Disney tomorrow evening.

I've completed the Lionsgate list.

But are all those titles being announced tonight Blu-Ray or HD-DVD? Or both?

When will we get definitive lists from the others? along with release dates and prices?

In the case of Paramount, at least, they've announced in (separate) press releases that it's the same slate for both formats.

So Blu Ray will use multi channel instead of coaxial or optical? What gives.

I thought there was mention that The Sound of Music was going to be included in the first batch of HD-DVD releases from Fox.

You can pass multichannel audio over coax/optical.

The first post says there are twenty titles including the handful specifically listed. There's no reason that The Sound of Music couldn't be among the rest of that twenty, but I guess it hasn't been part of the most recent set of press releases.

Alien and Star Wars, maybe?
It isn't going to be Star Wars, I'm willing to bet you that. One, they have no control over it. Lucas does. Two, I find it difficult if not impossible to believe that Lucas is going to allow Star Wars on Blu-Ray at the very beginning of it's release, when we're about to have a format war, and thus there's no way of knowing which format will win. Lucas waited forever to put Star Wars on DVD.

I'd imagine he will wait for one format to win, then for it to achieve a fairly sizeable market penetration. Love that word, penetration.

That's my guess.

Exactly. Lucas will wait for a dominant format, will wait for a large number of player sales, and will likely also wait for a cross-promotion opportunity -- probably around the time that the live-action TV show either hits television or is ready for DVD/Blu-ray.

'Multichannel' refers to the audio channels, not to the number of connectors necessary.

Apart from our old friends LPCM, Dolby Digital and DTS, Blu-ray will use Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD (aka Dolby Lossless) and DTS-HD. In the near future, all those signals will be routed via the HDMI cable to a compatible receiver. Then, sound quality will be identical to that of a current DVD-Audio with an MLP track.

In the meantime, you can continue to use the coaxial or optical cable, and the Dolby Lossless signal will downmix to a high-bitrate Dolby Digital signal.

Have I explained myself?

I'd double dip on both Sky Captain and Fifth Element for Blu-Ray. Nothing else on that list interests me though.

However, I'd be interested to see how many discs they need for the Blu-Ray Stargate Atlantis set. I'm not interested in that show but if it's going to be the first tv on blu-ray it might set the tone for disc count.

Actually, before this gets to out of hand, this probably means the new Dolby Digital Plus (or whatever it's called), which is fully un-compressed audio which can only be sent by HDMI (v.1.3) outputs, or the multi channel output of the player.

Currently, the HDMI output that send out this un-compressed multi-channel audio have nothing to connect to, but I'm certain that new receivers will be announced by Denon, Pioneer Elite and other high end companies at CES.

Most important to remember is don't panic, there will be a backwards compatible audio track on these discs, so they will play on you current A/V receivers. Either through standard DD or the multi-channel input of you receiver.

I'll find out more when I go to CES this weekend.

Alternately, I'm sure you can use the analog outputs on the player, just as with DVD-Audio or SACD.

In other news, Video Business magazine has a special Blu-ray insert here: http://redigitaleditions.com/ActiveM.../rvd060102.asp

Call me when...

1. The format war is over.

2. All these titles are re-released in better editions.

Thank you for playing.

I will stick with normal DVD's forever! They are damn good enough for me! Plus in a couple months, or so, they are gonna be CHEAP!

Are these releases set to include a lot of extras (docs and commentaries and such carried over from their DVD incarnations), or will they be predominantly bare-bones? I'm just curious if they're going to try and repeat the DVD marketing scheme of starting out with mostly bare-bones releases and then following up with better Special Editions down the line. If so, that seems especially transparent considering the wealth of extras they already have available to use.
