Thank you for playing.
Thank you for contributing nothiing.

Are these releases set to include a lot of extras (docs and commentaries and such carried over from their DVD incarnations), or will they be predominantly bare-bones?
Press releases say it's going to be 80-90% new bonus material on some discs with the rest being "spill-over" from DVD's.
Honestly, i'd rather they include all that stuff PLUS more. I'd rather not have to save the regular DVD PLUS the HD version.

Well you'll upgrade sooner or later but you do bring up a good point for which every person bitching about HD should be happy and clamoring for: Once this gets going, DVD prices will plummet. Used discs will be cheaper than ever.

Apart from our old friends LPCM, Dolby Digital and DTS, Blu-ray will use Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD (aka Dolby Lossless) and DTS-HD. In the near future, all those signals will be routed via the HDMI cable to a compatible receiver. Then, sound quality will be identical to that of a current DVD-Audio with an MLP track.

In the meantime, you can continue to use the coaxial or optical cable, and the Dolby Lossless signal will downmix to a high-bitrate Dolby Digital signal.

Have I explained myself?

That is one thing I am very happy about. I see that both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray require HDMI, which means as long as you have HDMI input on your TV, you are good to go. Don't have to worry about conversions.

People are talking about HD-DVD/BD as if the storage capacity on these discs is limitless. They're talking, in addition to the HD feature film, numerous uncompressed audio tracks, existing and new extras, other useless features (Internet-connectivity for buying soundtracks - uh, okay; Java games - wow). It's not like an entire show can fit onto a single disc, unless it's in SD, and maybe not even then.

Who wants an entire show on one disc?
My interest in pre-recorded material has VERY little to do with TV shows.

It's about movies. I've seen excellent captures at 15-20g for one movie. And that's a HOME copy. Imagine what would happen with professional equipment and dual-layer material.

I'm all over it.

Not a bad selection, but the only ones I'd care to pick up are T2 and RoboCop (and only if it's the unrated cut). It is nice to hear though that Stargate Atlantis is among the announced titles since that means hopefully I'll be able to get HD versions of TV shows in the near future.

Sony anounced there player (1080p) but no price:

SONY ENHANCES HIGH-DEF LEADERSHIP POSITION WITH DEBUT OF BLU-RAY DISC BASED PRODUCTS

LAS VEGAS (CES Booth #14200), Jan. 4, 2006 – Sony Electronics today unveiled a variety of Blu-ray Disc™-based products, offering a host of new high-definition entertainment possibilities.

U.S. product introductions will begin this spring and gather momentum over the summer with the introduction of a home player. BD technology will also be included in VAIO® computers, aftermarket computer drives and recordable BD-R (write-once) and BD-RE (rewritable) media.

Sony expects the Blu-ray Disc format to emerge as the standard in HD video performance and flexibility packaged in a convenient five-inch optical disc. The format features a robust 25GB single layer and 50GB dual layer capacity, making it ideal for feature length motion pictures with tons of extra feature material – all in full 1080p high definition – along with the multimedia possibilities of Java-enabled interactivity.

"Blu-ray Disc technology is the final piece needed to complete our vision of the high-definition world," said Hideki "Dick" Komiyama, president and chief operating officer for Sony Electronics Inc.

Sony's first Blu-ray Disc home player, model BDP-S1, will be available in early summer and features 1080p full HD video output for brilliant HD imagery and also DVD upscaling to 1080p. This initial BD player features a sophisticated design and exceptional build quality with rigid beam construction as well as finely tuned audio and video parts and circuits.

The company's RC series VAIO® desktop computer will combine Blu-ray Disc recording technology with high-octane performance, allowing aspiring HD movie makers and other videographers to shoot their creation with a high-definition camcorder. Using Sony's VEGAS software users can edit high-definition footage then archive and share it on Sony high-capacity BD-R and BD-RE Blu-ray Discs or on traditional DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/+RW discs, capitalizing on flexibility in storage, playback and recording. RC series desktops will be available with the drive in early summer.

As VAIO expands its line of digital home products Blu-ray Disc drives will be progressively integrated.

Sony also announced that a Blu-ray Disc aftermarket drive for personal computers is also expected to be available this year, and will support 25GB/50GB BD-R/RE discs, as well as DVD+R/+RW, and CD-R/RW recordable media. This drive will be bundled with consumer-level BD recording software and accessories for creation of High-Definition home video and data Blu-ray Discs.

Beginning in the spring, Sony will begin selling a 25GB single layer BD-R and the BD-RE recording media. Dual layer 50GB capacity recordable media will follow in the subsequent months. Recordable Blu-ray Discs utilize Sony's AccuCORE™ technology offering superb archival and reliability, scratch guard protection and temperature durability.
Sony's BD road map comes full circle by partnering the new home BD player with either a 1080p capable SXRD™ or BRAVIA™ LCD high-definition television.

Helping to support the BD players entering the market, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment division will be launching 20 titles on BD-Rom discs, spanning from recent hits to classic favorites.

Sony Computer Entertainment's PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system scheduled for launch this year will also adopt BD-ROM disc as its medium.

As long as HD players are going for $1000, my DVDs are most definitely NOT obsolete!

That is exactly the way I feel. If the PS3 does indeed support Blu-Ray movies out of the box and is under $500, it will be mine. I figure, it won't be the best player, but it will be good enough for now. I won't bother buying another one until they have a player compatible with both formats (if it is even needed), and is region free (I realize that most of Asia and the US share the same region).

How much you want to bet this is what they're hoping for. People who will also become addicted to video games....like me.

LOL. I got a PS2 for free last month and the next thing I realized was that I already spent more on video games and accessories than the cost of a PS2.

Hmmm, the average customer who doesn't plan on getting a PS3 has a choice to watch a high-definition movie in the following players:

Toshiba HD-DVD for $499
and those mentioned above. I don't see how they'd spend double or triple on the price to watch one.

If I decide to upgrade to HD this year, I'm leaning towards the Toshiba simply because of price. Not getting a PS3.

Warner announced their titles....it includes The Matrix, so I'm all over that.

If it's feasible to include a functional Blu-ray player in a console that will obviously retail for less than $500, it's also possible to release a standalone Blu-ray player for less than $500. And given the HD-DVD price point announcement, why wouldn't that happen? The Blu-ray camp aren't stupid.

Well, the logic that applies to selling consoles at a loss doesn't really apply in quite the same way to a movie-only player.

This is one of the things that disturbs me about the Toshiba player. Sure, it will allow people to adopt HD-DVD much faster than before, but how many of those people are going to be pissed when the find out they shelled out $500 for a crippled player?
